'Storytime' is a video and audio podcast available on RU-vid and Soundcloud hosted by Irish RU-vidr Clisare. Each episode has a central theme and guests are invited on to share their best stories around the theme. The episodes are filmed in one take unless otherwise stated, and no offence from the shenanigans contained within is intended.
This episode is sponsored by the Union of Students of Ireland Student Achievement Awards. The Student Achievement Awards are the annual opportunity for the Student Movement in Ireland to recognise the contribution of students to their community and their college. There are 17 categories and the closing date for nominations is 5pm on Friday, March 24th.
To enter, log onto usi.ie/awards and click on the award category you want to enter yourself or someone else into. The awards will be held in April and will be hosted by Clisare.
This episode has been edited for length due to James and Clare having massive mouths and having not caught up in ages.

OMG! You heard it here, the true reason Pope Benedict resigned, because of the shame he felt over causing the epic Clare v. James rift 😂😂😂

You two are so sound. Really enjoyed this, and particularly liked when you were discussing Congress.

Yaaas! Nice to see Jamesey. Fun video. I think we'd all like more Clare and James stories. I'm still laughing picturing yourself and Alex on a mobility scooter, you wrapped in a blanket (I know which blanket I'd choose😜) sitting in a basket. 😂 Thanks to you both for sharing it made my shit day better.

What a wonderful episode. So funny you both think you are old--you not even in your prime yet of your activism. Sounds like your student years laid a wonderful foundation for both of you. Very interesting content.

Hearing someone say that SU elections are usually bitchy is a relief. I ran for VP welfare (not DIT) after doing a part time position, and I went full bitch. I got called into a room and was told that I couldn't call out the promises made by the other candidate, nor could I mention the failings of previous officers up to that point. My whole campaign was about improving welfare services and making SU accounts public, both of which I had spoken to students prior to running. I ruffled a few feathers and I was made an outcast by the people I had worked with. I wanted to give up that election at that point, but I was told that I was not allowed to back out. My name was on the ballot, but I wasn't campaigning. I got 25% of the vote in a two man race. If I had have been stronger and ignored what people up top were saying I reckon I would have had a chance.

I think everyone gets caught up in it but I agree with pulling people back. At the end of the day, the majority of voters don't know about or care about the inter-personal politics of the thing. They want to know why they should bother voting, not hear someone moan about previous candidates. I think calling out unrealistic promises is fair enough though. Personally, I think you need to take responsibility for quitting, and not blame 'people up top'. It's hard to do, but the best part about student politics is that it shows you the best and worst of yourself, and you get to learn and grow from that. You need to analyse why something happened - why did you give up? Why did you give in to pressure? How would you deal with it differently now? It's a really amazing learning experience. It changed me as a person for the better in the long term.

Thanks for the reply. I think it might have been anxiety that got me in the end. After I got a telling off from an outgoing elected officer that my campaign went to far, I locked myself away and cried for hours. I'm not the sort of person who pushes people around to get what I want, I pushed the boundaries of who I am because I felt I could make a difference for the better. I was putting people I worked with on trial publicly without realising the damage I was doing. I knew I'd ruffle feathers, that's politics, but I did not expect people who had supported me throughout my part time work in the union to back away. That's what turned me off in the end, the talk ended with a comment of me losing my friends. I still feel that I would have been a great officer, but the guy who got elected did a better job than I would have done and he became someone I'd admire. I even confided to him in his final weeks in office that I regretted losing the respect of his predecessor. If I got the chance to do it again, yes I would. I would have done the whole campaign differently and focused more on what I could have brought. However, quitting when I did did make me grow up. I learned to listen to people when they are worried about me and that everyone has a limit that they can be pushed to before they lose the ability to tolerate you. I did not expect to do some internal reflecting this morning lol

I tried...I really did. I gave it my best shot. Tuned in for humor and laughs. I really liked this guy on FACTS. Gave it 10 minutes. The term “Gender Fluidity” did it. I’m done...
