In this video, Fuller shares with us the process he's developed at our church to on-board volunteers. In other words, how do you go from knowing a person is interested in joining the worship team to actually serving on Sundays.
This process is highly organized and scale-able from very small to huge churches.
We mention a number of free resources in the video - here are the links to those:

Is the on-boarding process the same for student musicians, or do you alter it since they're young? For example, moving one up from the youth band to the main band.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't know what the onboarding process is in my fellowship but I often see the same musicians on stage every week (I know that's another video). I have talked to my worship leader about young people wanting to be on the team and his answer was "I can't find anyone who is interested; no one wants to." Sometimes I wonder if it might be better to make an investment in people - to train them so they can succeed - rather than expect them to be a success when they show up I ran into this in a church that plays a lot of gospel-style music (Israel Houghton, etc., heavy on slap bass and tight musicianship) and probably should have stepped away when I wasn't up to the task. I'm not sure I agree with expecting people to invest all the time, energy, money, and work it takes to become the kind of musician it sounds like you guys are looking for and then ask them to give that away. I have had family members who made their living from playing in church (and almost starved, btw) and I have studied under teachers who left the church because the gig was not serious and music is how they pay the bills. Interested to get your feedback.

David Byrd we definitely don’t expect Israel level musicians!!! Lol But we have some who are at that level. We also don’t have a problem with paying musicians if the budget allows! A man is worth his wages!!! But in our team, our folks gladly volunteer their time. They also usually only serve once per month which keeps them from burning out and it allows them to truly enjoy it when they play

Do you believe that making the exceptions for great musicians could create tension between them and musicians who went through the process of auditioning? My fear is that not sticking to some process even if it’s the core values night would feel jarring for those who go through that process. Just a thought I had listening to this. Great content though guys, tons of great stuff I would love to apply with our ministry at Lifegate Denver.
@brianmichaelfuller
@brianmichaelfuller 4 года назад
Worship Guitar Sound most of the people on our team Are mature enough to understand that every now and then in life there are exceptions to the rules. But remember the audition process is not a part of our values it’s a part of our process. Whether you audition or not everyone is held to the same standard when it comes to our values and principles. And no one actually skipped the audition process it’s just that the audition for someone experienced may be different. It may be as simple as a seeing a RU-vid video of them somewhere. But either way we’re not gonna let anyone on the stage that we don’t know for sure can deliver.

How do you handle the process when someone doesn’t have a great audition, or they are not a good fit? Is there a development team, or way for new singers and musicians to gain experience?
@Bsnyddd
@Bsnyddd 3 года назад
I don't know if this helps, and I'm not an expert. But I have a collection of video resources/blogs for people who do NOT make it on. Stuff for vocalists, pianists, guitarists.. everyone! And I send it to them in a follow up email and then let them know that they can re-audition in 2+ months. For people who are JUST shy of being a yes, I offer free coaching, weekly, for a max of 4 weeks. I have team members who make themselves available to be a part of those as well. Just an idea that's been really working well for our ministry, and also helping to build relationships early in the onboarding process.

When you were talking about being a “new” worship leader, would you recommend starting at a smaller church or should you just go ahead and focus on reaching the most people starting off on stage?

So what does your devotional time look like and how does that work on a rehearsal night? Like time wise?
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 4 года назад
It's about 30 minutes during the middle of our rehearsals. Usually we have a short devotional led by one of our leaders and then the rest of the time is just sharing and praying together. We talk about it in the rehearsal guide video which is linked in the description of this video.

Fuller and Brian, I have a question or two about instrumentation. (Perhaps a long time viewer will know an answer and direct me to one of their other videos.) 1st, I have been blessed by the few videos of yours that I have recently become aware of and watched. Thank you for your content. I have not seen any 'acoustic' (orchestral) instruments in your videos of worship songs, or heard you talk about them. I play trumpet and trombone. Would such instruments be welcome on your team? How about electric violin, soprano sax, flugel horn, cello? You're always (from what I've seen) talking about guitarists, drummers, and singers, but never (so far) horn players. With such a large congregation I would think you would have at least a small contingent of such instrumentalists...and a desire to use them (especially as you outline in this particular video). What if I came to you after one of your recruiting events and told you that my family of 4 just relocated from another state where we all served in music ministry...2 trumpets, 1 french horn, and 1 trombone. We would like to serve together with you. What would be your response?
@brianmichaelfuller
@brianmichaelfuller 4 года назад
Scott Ashley I actually started a small orchestra at newhope for this reason!! I actually love orchestral music and compose it for tv shows. So for me my answer would be YES AND PRAISE GOD!!! I would pair you up with a saxophone player we have and we would do some brass sections!!! I dream of a day when I have a full string and brass section available!!!

I hear, understand and agree as a leader that this admin person is a success maker/breaker. As a team member, I hate this person/role and its not their fault. They are often a barrier (or can be) because they are not musical in nature and are often standing in my way of the leadership or leadership team etc... I always want a direct line to the leadership. That may seem strange, but, Im not satisfied to just be "drummer number 8" on the depth chart or what have you. I always buck this trend. I know why it exists nnow, and I came up in the old system when none of this was needed. But, sadly, people arent all the same and dont communicate the same and reply quickly etc... The rules have had to adapt I get it. But, still, I prefer the simpler smaller church and ministry teams in general. I dont buy in to the larger is better and I never will. I dont see it in the Bible either. But, again, thats my opinion and is probably largely unwelcomed. I appreciate yall's weekly videos and I forward them to my team now as well. I dont know if they are being watched or are a benefit to them, but I make them available. Keep up the good work fellas.
