Haha read some of our comments - it's a pretty polarizing topic. People are scared. Then they get jealous when they see intermediate woodworkers like us make more money than them.

@@MrMaacin05 if he can find people to pay that more power to him. I'd have to work 6 hrs at my job to afford one of his cutting boards. I do think his labor and mark up are pretty high but you charge what the market will bare and apparently its quite a bit in his area. Rich folk wont bat an eye at that price, poor folk like me will.

Jennie and Davis I am so thrilled to see young people making there way through handcrafted items. I do feel you are at a disadvantage with having to acquire so much information on both business and manufacturing at the same time. Its such a shame you don’t have the mentors in your age group that my age group had. I know there is so much ahead of you that is going to change as you gain knowledge and experience. I would advise you looking into a SCORE program if it’s available in your area or a referral group that may have older business members. These things will help you stack the deck in your favor. Please remember things are cyclical and in a few years your business model and plan will have to change with the times so always keep up with trends. I wish you so much luck and success.

Nice video. People don't understand the time, effort, and skill it takes to create 1 off projects. 5 years ago I recieved a custom order, from a close friend to build a display stand for a certian type of hunting item. It was my buddies idea and I brought it to life. All was well and good and my friend used his new stand at a trade show. It drew a lot of attention from similar vendors and they were interested in purchasing some (multiples in some cases). When they contacted me and asked for a price. I quoted them 3 prices ($90-$125) depending on the quantity bought. They all politely declined except one guy. He was very rude, and stated that I was out of my mind charging what I did. I asked him how much would he pay and he told me $35. I could only laugh and when he questioned why I told him that there was at least $45 in materials in building these. He then said he would take 2 at that price but I told him to go pound sand...

I’m very impressed with all your efforts and enjoy watching you guys learn and share. Producing videos and your focus on trying to run a successful wood working business while still keeping your flying jobs is humbling in the sense that this old guy (57yr old) just doesn’t have that same level of motivation/energy to do the same. I do think however, that one of your less developed areas relates to aesthetic’s. For example as opposed to slamming out a hundred cutting boards that look generic, try out different designs and wood combinations until something really strongly appeals to both you and many others. It is my opinion that hand made items need to be artisan is quality and design. Anything less can and probably is mass produced.

I did!!! Lol. I would have had to blend that out or something!!! When I run lumber through the planer, I add a sacrificial board to the first and last board to run through the planer, or just cut a couple pieces 4 inches longer on the first board and last board. This way the trash gets the snipe.

@jimnz17
@jimnz17 3 года назад
yea i saw it, didn't want to say. ive been wrestling snipe on my boards. i took off the factory tables and built a 5 foot MDF insert table. it made a big difference but not perfect. i attack the snipe with 80grit after every planner session. the sacrificial board idea is good *IF* you have a piece the right thickness, so for me it tends to waste more time than just sanding it out.
@charlieodom9107
@charlieodom9107 3 года назад
@@jimnz17 you should always have a piece. If you are making a cutting board, then cut the outside two pieces 3 inches longer than the rest on 2 boards, then always feed the extra length first and last on the planer. If you have 10 long glueups going through the planer, you'll only waste 3 inches on the first and last board, but only the outer two pieces of those glueups. If you are doing something else, then use a piece of construction grade pine and cut a 1/2" strip for each side at any thickness greater than your finished piece and glue it to the outside of your board to be planed. You can also just run a piece on each side of the board you are trying to plane without gluing it, but you'll need to make sure it it wide enough to stand on its own so it doesn't flip over in the planer. Having a piece the right thickness is not important, as you can use anything thicker and just plane it down.

I appreciate unlike most that your work and videos are more marketing/sales oriented. I am a piano tuner and I charge on average $400 dollars for first time customers with residuals yearly. Because the truth is I can work like a dog and make slightly more money. Or I can pick and choose, work 40% less and make almost the same amount. Its a waste of time to work for people who don't value you.
@elliotdance7790
@elliotdance7790 4 месяца назад
You can eliminate the snipe by making two of your strips a little long. One sticking out the front the other the back. Then when you plane, the long strip will receive the snipe and you can cut it off. It doesn't waste too much wood. I do it with the cheaper woods.

not to mention the burn marks from the router that a few extra seconds of sanding would of removed. I'm not hating but don't put a subpar product out for top dollar. Every area is different for pricing, I would never get 90 for a board that basic.

Nice work and good video. I hope your viewers won't mind a little constructive advice, its not a good idea to use a very hard wood like purple heart for a long grain glue up like that because the other softer woods are going to wear faster and leave the purple heart as a hump down the center. Perhaps using at least two more purple heart boards with the softer boards between would prevent this and not detract from the design. But again good work keep it up

40 years cabinet maker furniture maker and finisher here. The best way (Ive found) to make money selling cutting boards, is not trying to make money selling cutting boards. I give a perfect exsmple. I was recently at a flea market and I happened to see a guy stlling cutting boards. So of course I had to check his prices. They ranged from $40 to $100+. Some of his boards were simply single pieces of wood no "stripes", juice gooves nothing, just sanded and oiled for $40-$60. His more elaborate ones we $60-$100-ish. There was no one looking ag his work ....except me. Shortly after that I saw another guy selling boards his prices were ftom $15 to $60. The small ones for $15 were edge glued, multiple woods about 8x12. So even his smallest and least expensive pieces had some wotk put into them. His booth was swamped with buyers! Be realistic with your pricing and you do well with simple quick and easy projects like cutting boards.

I build 10 cutting boards at a time and I do not make anymore until those sale unless I have someone ask for something special. I can do them start to finish in a Saturday in the shop. If I spend 10 hours in the shop I can usually batch out 10 cutting boards 12x16x3/4 face grain and several 18x22 serving trays. I do it as a hobby not to make a lot of money and so far my hobby pays for itself. Also I buy rough cut lumber and mill it all up during that Saturday as well. Your tips are great keep them coming!

The board looks great! That said - it isn't the best quality product you guys could provide for $105. I'm glad you came sell that board for that price and feel good about it. I have to have a specific request for a face grain board like that before I'll make it. Edge grain and end grain boards are much more durable, a little more work but a much better product. Success isn't all "profit margin". Will that customer still be using that board in 5-7 years? I doubt it.

Glad to see you are doing well. I wish to make a comment without insulting. There are 2 different margins. 1 is add on percent and the other is true profit margin. Your true margin on the 105 dollar sale is really about 30%. In order to get a true 40% margin you would have to sell it for 125. Example you buy an item for 1.00 and you want to make 30 percent so you would price it at 1.30 . .......1.00 x 30% = 1.30 Now take the same 1.00 and you divide it by the reciprocal. 1.00 divided by .70 = 1.45. Keep up the videos. Great job.

There are so many cost involved that no one realizes. All the equipment and lights costs money. The place were the shop is has to be paid for! I see they designed and made their own zig. That came at a cost. Board feet cost on pine certainly isn’t the same as walnut. I’m at a disadvantage apparently because I did not hear true cost numbers in a video. Insurances, travel, taxes, equipment maintenance repair or replacement, their sales time and labor all are part of costs. All of these factors are in every product we buy. Do you really believe a mass produced item is going to cost the same as a handmade item? Common sense should answer that question. Every big box store has different pricing for different areas. And for many reasons. A product made in your back yard isn’t going to necessarily cost the same as an item shipped across the country. However one rule will always apply. Consumers can identify and are to pay for quality!

Hi, accountant here: determine maintenance cost incurred for your machine each year. Divide that out to get an hourly cost associated with maintenance. You could get even more granular and figure your other overhead items and add that to your labor rate - the main idea is that whatever hourly rate you decide, you’re recovering costs your incurring to operate the machine and also the human host of working the machine. You could also figure a payback period for the purchase price, and add that to your hourly rate figure. Quite a few ways to do it

Great video man. Everyone has their complaints on pricing, or glue, or whatever. Not their business. People should join Cutting Board Mafia on Facebook if you're an up and coming woodworking wanting to learn more. I love that you're transparent with the business side though, as that is the hardest part for most people. I wish I could find more help on the marketing side myself. The only thing I would suggest for this video, it took me forever to learn, would be to raise the grain before final sanding. Gives a better final product and takes 10 extra seconds. So many small details add to the final product, and you hit a ton here. Keep it up man. Glad to see you being successful. I'm going back to raise some prices now lol.
@spencerjw
@spencerjw 5 лет назад
As editing goes, it's very possible they didn't show every step they took. I make these same types of boards and sell them for a very similar price. But while watching I noticed the sanding pieces of the video were short. I didn't take that as them not putting in the work but rather as cutting that out since sanding is very repetitive and boring to watch. I personally sand after planing from 220 -> 320 -> (wipe down to raise grain [sometimes twice]) -> 400 grit. May be overkill, but that glassy finish really makes the board a superior product and I take pride in what I create, as do these two.

Glad to see the word margin come into play, so many people miss that concept that you and the business have to make money, they are separate entities. Curious if your $30/hr rate is because of the project or the area you're in? just seems a bit low. I've used a model before where it's 75/hr for the more experienced parts of a project vs the more simple or entry level parts of a project where if you had employees they may make a different rate based on their skill and the task they are doing.

Like the vids you guys post. With all the info it’s great to know plus you guys working the project. It’s like dinner and a show. How ever I would like to know where you get your material. What you used on wood for the cutting board here in Houston Texas I’m looking at 60$ plus. Awesome videos you guys.

@@Apollo0351 ok after a bit of research, yes titebondII can be used in indirect contact with food,as long as you are using the plain wood glue version. Apparently there are multiple types of titebond II that are not FDA approved for indirect contact, something that you may want to keep in mind if selling said boards.

At about 6:50 Davis in fingering the snipe left on the cutting board. For the non wood worker, “snipe”is a byproduct of planning the wood. It’s an uneven surface. You can remove it with the correct sanding method. He simply left it on the board for character....not!

props to you for selling an over priced item. as advice to anyone else trying to sell woodworking products, you will have a hard time selling things with labor and margin - especially starting out. Like i said, Davis(?), all the power to you for getting good money for minimal effort, but dont pretend that a 105 cutting board will work for everyone. Considering the competition, a handmade cutting board will probably only sell for 40-50 dollars. Even with exotic woods, the average consumer wont want to pay more than double they can pay at walmart for a similar product. I want to reiterate, sell your product for the most money possible. If you can pull off 105 dollars for 30 dollars expense thats awesome and 75 dollhairs in your pocket. Your price should align with your market, but until you get a returning customerbase then dont be surprised if that cutting board youre selling for 105 never gets picked up
@jennieanddavis
@jennieanddavis 5 лет назад
If you're doing passive sales, yes. 105 is ridiculous to the average person. But if you look for clients who aren't the average low-middle class Joe, the whole world opens up to you.

@4:55 I'm confused with your prices. You show a 40% margin. Don't you have a 40% markup? Because a 40% margin is $50 (75/(1-margin(40%)) = $75/.6 = $125-75=50. I always thought markup and margin are two separate things.

@andrewsmith4956 4 года назад
Good video, I always enjoy y’all’s content. I was going to make this comment as well. Davis, you did price this using “markup” at 40%, not “margin.” They are two very different numbers, every single time. Markup at 50% on $100 is a selling price of $150. $100+($100*50%)=$150 Margins at 50% on $100 is a selling price of $200. (100% markup) $100/.5=$200 a 60% margin will look like $100/.4=$250 I believe, from a business perspective, it is important to note the difference. If you want to operate at a GPM of 50% but only markup your products by 50% you’ll never hit your goal. Anyways, I will digress. Overall, great video and I do receive your point. If you want to turn it into a business, you’ve got to start selling. You’re likely not going to come out of the gate making a ton of cash, but as word gets out, you get better at the craft and maybe gain some sales and business acumen, you will be able to start operating at higher margins and really growing the business.

Where are you buying your wood for cutting boards?
@dusbus2384
@dusbus2384 2 года назад
Is $30/hr for labor an arbitrary number pulled out of the aether or did you arrive at that number through some process? I was considering charging $25/hr for a project recently which I pulled right out of thin air so wanted to see if your method was similar. Also do you typically try to stay around 25-30% GPM or is it just on cutting boards?
