I love that I'm not the only one who has trouble sitting quietly for devotions, I sometimes feel guilty doing housework while I'm praying but I feel like it's when I connect with the Lord the most. Thanks for the encouragement!
I'm with Jayna. I shower in the morning to get my energy for the day and "quick rinse" in the evening to get rid of all the sweat and germs that have accumulated throughout the day.
Fork & left = 4 letters. Spoon & right = 5 letters…that’s as much table setting as I know at nearly 40 😊 I’m not sure if this is a hot take…but I’d like to say that not all kids (not all boys in particular) need to always be on a sports team of some sort. It seems like the only question I get asked as a boy mom is “what sport is he playing right now” and I always say “none! we like to be home and he likes to play his guitar or do legos”. What is it with the pressure to have your kid in sports? (As context, I’m a work from home mom to a ten year old boy in 5th grade at a Christian school, but he went to public school until 4th grade) Love to you both. You’ve been an encouragement to me as a newly saved and baptized (on Christmas 2022) Christian. My husband and I grew up in Michigan but we now live in Arizona (omg I loved your recent anniversary trip video, Megan). Love from Phoenix 🏜🌵🦂
It's pretty simple to remember if you just eat properly - the fork is used in your left hand and the knife (to cut with) on your right hand, so that's the sides you lay them out on. The dessert spoon sits between them - at the top - with the handle to your right side as that's the side you'll pick it up with to use it. To keep it out of the way the side plate and knife (if your using it) goes on your left, and the glass you'll drink out of is on your right. In the UK we set out tables like that every day - unless in a very casual restaurant that brings all the cutlery in a pot. :)
I just love these types of videos!! I am retired and an empty nester but I sure enjoy listening to you young girls and how your days go with young children, homemaking etc. I worked outside the home from the time my boys were 3 months old. I used to be so jealous of my friends who had the privilege of staying home. All the things they got to do. I was an 8-5 person. Once home, I didn't do anything outside of work. I felt so guilty being away at work so all my evening time and week-end time were with my boys. Simple now is my favorite. I still cook everyday which I hate but I do it. I loved the hot take about the duvet cover. I never ever understood the purpose of them. I just use a quilt type cover. Another hot take are all the Instagramers that do nothing but sell stuff to us....I feel like so many are constant informercials. I have cut back and unfollowed a few. Thank you for sharing your lives and your day. You channel is one of my favorites to follow!! God bless you girls!
I get up at 5:45am and immediately say a rosary. My day usually gets away from me, so if I don’t have prayer time first thing, it doesn’t usually happen. I always get ready and dressed. My kids are early birds and at least my son is always up before me! He’s 11 and knows not to bother me until at least 6am so I can finish praying. Then it’s downstairs to make breakfast. The 3 kids and I will pray and then eat while listening to memory songs for school and a Catholic kids podcast. After that we roll into our homeschool morning until lunch. We’ll finish up afternoon school and before I know it, it’s time to start dinner! We usually eat around 4-4:30 and our evenings are totally unstructured. My husband gets up around 3am, so we’re all in bed early-the kids by 8 and us around 9! Before our youngest was born, I used to get up with him (he wasn’t getting up quite so early then!) but after she was born, I retired from that since I wasn’t getting enough sleep and was beginning to homeschool our oldest for preschool. 😊
I am an agnostic Mum from Australia and I love hearing about other people’s lives that are different and ways we are all the same! I love it. I’m currently on maternity leave and I listen and RELISTEN to your podcasts to get me in the mood for housekeeping 😂 it certainly helps me enjoy it instead of being neutral or sometimes not enjoying it!
Same in UK - I grew up with a top sheet, blanket and a quilt but now just a duvet (in it's cover) and a fitted sheet on the bottom. Don't understand why they find that more work. Yes we have a lighter weight duvet in the warmer weather but still just means one sheet and the duvet cover to wash each week.
My aunt taught me how to set the table when I was very young. “The silverware were all together, and then the fork LEFT.” Even in my 60s I sometimes say this in my head to remember my aunt and which side the fork goes on. Lol
I find it so odd that people struggle with this - don't you use the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand anyway? What's so difficult to remember then?! Dessert spoon then sits across the top of them - handle to the right side (as you'll pick it up with your right hand).
So funny to hear you mention straddle parenting. That is where I am at, but never heard the term. My oldest is almost 23 and my youngest is 2. I have 9 all between those ages and everyone still lives at home with work schedules that span all hours of the day and night, along with the toddler that still gets up at night, and yes, the late talks with the teens! It is a wonderful time of life...but I'm very tired! 😂
So glad to see you girls are back! I’m 65 years old with 2 adult sons and I love listening to how you girls mother your children, cook and clean. Brings back so many memories. The mom shaming episode last season was so spot on. Believe me, mom shaming was around when I was a young mom. I love a simple bed. A quilted bedspread that reaches the floor on both sides, 2 sleeping pillows and that’s it. No throw pillows. Keep up with the very entertaining “show”. 😉
Thanks for being here! I have 5 throw pillows at the moment and they bring me so much joy some days and other days I just want to tuck them in a closet!
You guys are a hoot! I love that you have so many different ways of doing things. Its what makes people interesting. You can find yourself thinking, hmm, maybe I'll try your way and actually like the change. Love the giggles along the way, life doesn't have to be set in stone. 😊
I'm with Jayna, no to duvet covers. We had one for a few years. It was pretty, but fussy. Now we have a beautiful quilt that's 100% American made. It's a game changer!!
So glad you ladies are back !!! Megan love you girl but you’ve got to stop grabbing and fiddling with that microphone every time you talk !! Keep up the great work ! Can’t wait for the next video !!
As for duvets, you remove weekly and wash with sheets. Less bulky than washing blankets each week. The insert does not touch the body and can be washed less frequently thus less soap water and drying. Yes they can be difficult to insert the blanket inside, but washing blankets each week is more costly . I too live quilts but they are heavy and I like to keep my bedding squeaky clen
Yes!! About the duvets! We have never had one in our home. The one thing I'd say about the sound is that the music is always VERY loud compared to your voices. I always have to turn the volume down for that part...
I agree with BOTH of your hot takes. To add to the bed making opinions... We have NO decorative pillows on our beds. You either need a special place to store them overnight, or they end up on the ground (gross) and they are extra work in making the bed.
I am definitely in the "no routine cleaning routine" club. I clean and organize and tidy as I see it's needed. I do laundry once a week and that's it (daily laundry, I find myself forgetting to turn over loads or feeling like I live under piles of clothes, or leaving some folded out and some is out away, just felt like a really disorganized chore). I have a scheduled home day once a week where I do laundry and any big projects needed, I try to do a little each day so not much is needed. My husband cooks twice a week, I cook the other days and we go out once a week. I love learning homemaking ideas and tips and love strategies for hosting too. Love all your thoughts and ideas.
I am a grandmother to college age kids! Loved your busy lives! It never ends! I worked as a young mother but my older friends from church were there for me. Those days were fun! I am not a list maker but I do have a mental list! I am more Jayna! But my sisters are still making lists! When I have company I do have a menu plan. And we have a lot of guests often! I keep food that I can fix quickly when needed. ❤ you both! I missed you & was thrilled to find you today & learn it is your first show!
Yup, I was that random person saying "Hi" to Jayna at the New Holland fair Saturday night and commented on seeing both her and Megan in one evening! I never know whether to say anything or not, but it's fun to meet people in real life you watch online!
Love a quilt! So pretty and looking, especially hand made ones. But duvets are so easy to make and air the bed, even for kids. We live in Maine so a quilt would mean layered blankets-pain! One warm comforter and one light one for summer works so well for us. Whatever works for you! Our library got rid of fines to make the library more equitable. It is awesome. I love how your rhythms are so different. Just goes to show-figure out what works for you.
I love how both sides are represented in this conversation! I resonated with parts of both😊 stage of life is huge! I keep telling myself one day I’ll get up early again, maybe when I’m not pregnant and my toddler is sleeping well again🤪 I’d love to hear how your routine changes when your little one comes Meghan💕
Yes! Duvets are so tricky to manage! I really want to replace our duvets with quilts, but they’re really expensive here in New Zealand. Considering making some, when time allows.
My kids are grown and on their own, but I love watching your videos. Some things just never change. I had a very similar daily schedule when my kids were young. Like you, I enjoyed that afternoon respite before they got off of the bus. What’s funny is that I still find that time of the day my “relaxing quiet time.” I miss the kids and the energy in the home, but am learning to enjoy the grandkids when they visit. Keep up the great job you are doing with these videos.
My alarm goes off at 5:30am, I get myself ready for the day, have some quiet devotional time and a coffee before starting on breakfast and my husbands lunch. At 7 I start waking the children, at 8 my husband is out the door. I feel like I need a lot of structure (always organise my cleaning by days etc.) and that way the whole family thrives. Loved hearing your perspectives! God bless you and yours!
I loved this episode, thanks Megan and Jayna! I would say I'm a good mix of you both when it comes to home making and productivity. I don't have side hustle, but I do have a vegetable garden, cook from scratch (I do the sourdough, bone broth, tallow, etc., thing), so that keeps me super busy. I also have an almost two year old, and I like to be very intentional with involving him in whatever I'm doing. Nap time is usually just an hour and a half from 11:30 to 1PM, but ahh...I love it! I like to rest half the time and be in the garden or tackle a project that is difficult to do with a toddler in the mix during nap time. And I love being home! I live in the middle of nowhere, though, so going out is a real thing that takes tons of preparation! Thanks for chatting, your podcasts are so much fun to listen to when I'm busy!
I'm very organized with all sorts of lists. It helps to put my mental load onto paper and write down a good recipe when I find one. I feel a sense of clarity once I write things down and then I don't have so much repetitive static in my head. My husband and mother-in-law are completely different though. They have memories like elephants and store all things in their head. They can keep track of all priorities, politics, factual information, and much more like a well-oiled machine/filing cabinet up there and it stresses them out to put their mental load on paper because then it's just a visual of how much they have to do. They function very well keeping all things up there and are more disciplined than I am. For me I use the lists and alarms as little cues to keep me on task. They don't need that. We all function differently. I have a bath 3 times a week at night. I also shower at night. Sometimes I shower in the middle of the day on a slower day if I feel like I need it. I won't shower I'm the morning because I don't want to go outside with wet hair and get sick. I wake around 6:30am. It's hard to wake sooner than that for me but I'm aiming to become a part of the 5am wake-up club. The idea of enjoying a slower morning and getting some reading in with my girls is very appealing.
I’ve gone back sheets and a blanket as I was getting to hot, however I do have pretty seasonal pillows and a throw blanket. I just love watching all your channels xx
“Proper” way for silverware (last I heard) is generally in order of use which visually looks smallest to tallest. Soup, salad, dinner = spoon, fork, knife. Dessert usually comes with new silverware. …I’m pretty sure that is right. But I’m no etiquette teacher. So…🤷🏻♀️
When I started babysitting the mother asked me to set the table, I didn’t know how to put the silver ware down. I was embarrassed. The next day the mom set the table. I payed close attention to learn how. When I raised my children I taught them to set the table properly on Sundays.
But don't you eat with the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand? So that's how they're laid on the table. Dessert spoon at the top between them to use later (if you're having dessert) with handle to the right as that's the hand you'll pick it ip with. Pretty simple and a standard here in the UK.
I love your new line of clothes, and the black skirt that is so soft, like a sweatshirt can you please make it in more colors, olive green and navy blue. Love this ❤🎉
I make quilts! I don't make the very puffy ones, but I put batting inside for sure. Mine are Mennonite quilts since I'm Mennonite too. Right now I am reading "The Lifegiving Parent." I feel like Jayna is organized in her brain and that is okay. I am the same way! I have a schedule in my head that I go by. I am the same way where I try to do my housework as soon as I can in the morning and get it done. I am a morning person. It is enjoyable to listen to you ladies talk. What fun! You mamas have a lot of little ones, but when they get a bit older, you will find you get more free time, as the kids will entertain one another and not really want to hover around you as much (and eventually they will have jobs, like my oldest has now ahh). I love family walks too. It is hard to find good shows where there is not sexual content throughout it.
Hmmm - I grew up with them but too mny layers with sheets, blankets and then the quilt. Love our duvet as so simple, nothing else needed exept the sheet on the bed! Btw a good duvet is also made from feather and down and doesn't need to be washed, just the cover which is like a big pillow case.
I shower at mid morning or night if there isn't anything good on tv 😀. But when I first get up I have to do a few things before getting dressed or it unsettles my mind..haha. So I drink my protein shake, then start homeschool which begins with us saying our prayers and then the pledge. Then my son gets dressed and eats and I glance over what we're doing again. Then we work in that until lunchtime and I get dressed. Then I have a rest after lunch and he reads and/or writes in his journal. Then he has free time until after my rest. Then we deep clean the room if the day best as we are able to. I really like the idea of throwing a load in the washer first thing too.💕
No time at all - just take the cover off once a week and wash it - not need for any other sheets or blankets (other than a sheet on the mattress). Simple! The duvet itself doesn't need to be washed.
So happy to see you back and love the new set-up!! My homemaking hot-take....clothes lines (even though I use one). Because 8 out of 10 times I bring the clothes in and throw them in the dryer anyway to "fluff" them up 😅 My clothes get so stiff, and sometimes smelly (we do live on a farm though) when they dry on the line. Do you like and use a clothes line??
When my kids were young we lived by routine, but now that they're teens that don't have licenses or cars, but do have jobs, routine is impossible. I also used to look forward to outings with my young kids, now I long for days at home with the family. Funny how seasons change. We definitely have to learn to be flexible.
I am one of those Traudl parents… L O L! I have a 17-year-old, a 16-year-old, a six year old, a four-year-old, and a nine month old baby. And I homeschool. I can honestly say that God does not give extra energy… Lol!
Hahahahahaha - Thanks! Need to know that because as a homeschool mom of just 3 I get tired running the girls to their activities. Sometimes the idea of a bus doing it all seems wonderful.
I never have to think how to set out the cutlery on the table - here in the UK we eat with the fork in our left hand and the knife in our right hand, to do the cutting. The spoon sits between them (at the top - with the handle to the right side because you'll pick it up with your right hand). To save getting in the way the side plate and knife (if you're using them) go in your left side and the glass you'll be drinking out of goes on your right side. Of course all this is to favour righy-handed people which annoys my left-handed husband!
I wish I didn’t need a duvet but it’s so fluffy and I’m hooked to the coziness. Regular comforters are too hot - so I’m just married to my duvet at this point.
My husband has to get up at 445 for work and I dont have to get up for work til 6am. I have always made him wake me up before leaving for a kiss goodbye and to tell him I love him and to wear his seatbelt 🤪 But then I go back to sleep until its time for me to get up!
I like duvet covers because I can switch out our bed top without buying a whole new thing. I stuff my plain old white comforter in the covers.😄 But that’s just something I like enough to trade it out like people flip through purses.😆
I don't think Francesca Battistelli (or similar others) would say to be home 24/7 w/o going out. I think she means to be present in the home as a homemaker and not neglect the overall care of home and family. Plus I believe God's design for homemakers doesn't negate personality and social needs.
I got stuck inside my duvet cover once and fell off my bed trying to pull the duvet flat into each of the corners. Never bought a duvet again after that..
Honestly it's so easy - just put the top corners of the duvet into the top corners of the cover then pull the cover down and give it a sharp shake or two and the duvet will be inside the cover. We do have a really big one so my husband and I do it together but it takes seconds (we laugh that we've been doing it together every week for over 37 years now!)
@@sallyannc3176 my brain did not figure that out 😂😂 lol it was my first time owning one so I actually crawled inside it to smooth out the edges. Feeling myself falling onto the floor was humbling haha
@@maddy-zzz to be fair a lot of folk have done that! Once you understand how a duvet works it actually makes life easier. Americans seem to see it as a bed topper when it should be used on it's own - no other sheets or blankets needed. Very easy to make the bed each day - just shake up the duvet!
I’m only 9 minutes in but Jayna, where did you get your skirt? I really like it, it looks good on you. Megan, I’m looking forward to browsing your new Inherit line soon! ❤ from louisiana
Also, like Jayna, I dress according to the probability that I may need to go out later. I like staying at home, so to have to change clothes on top of it, ugh!
How? Just take the cover off and wash it - very easy. We have a large one on our king size bed so I do get my husband to help me put the cover back on but it literally takes a minute. So much easier than having extra sheets and blankets on the bed - and you can get lighter weight ones for the warm months. :)
I've not heard of homemaking hot takes but I think I've gathered what it means. lol I've never owned or desired to own a duvet cover. I need to try a quilt though because I feel like even with a larger washer, comforters are a pain to wash and dry. Perhaps a quilt would be easier. 🤔
Get the next size up you’ll be happier I love them so much better than comforters Laura Ashley ones are so nice little pricey but I find last year styles
The irony of the timing of when I made this comment…..my husband and I were looking at weighted blankets last night and I decided I wanted one with a duvet cover since the blankets themselves are hard to wash. So within 24 hours I’m eating my words. 🤣 But I still would like to try a quilt for my bed.
I don't think people in the US understand how duvets work - it's the same as a feather quilt (don't buy synthetic fillings) but usually bigger so it hangs down the side of the bed and completely covers you at night. You put a cover on it thatc omes off for washing but there's no need to wash the duvet itself. Don't put a sheet under it as that stops you trapping the warm air to keep you cosy - but you can put a nice wool blanket on top of it if it's really cold (again it traps in the wamth). A lighter 'tog' or weight can be used in the Summer.
Great video! Haha, I've always had a duvet cover, know nothing else. Makes me wonder about a quit now 😂 I'm with Jayna on showering in the morning! I don't like going to bed with wet hair or blow drying before bed lol
I have duvet covers but we have two small duvets, so it's easier to change the cover. I switch covers every two weeks, when I switch the sheet and pillow cases. And I don't use a top sheet since I wash the duver covers so often. I guess it's a European thing.
I have been enjoying your podcast! I don’t understand the wallpaper - it looks like you whitewashed the wall unevenly. But hey, if you love it, keep it! Just giving a different perspective in case it’s helpful.
So funny, everyone here 🇬🇧 has duvets and has for decades…. Like it’s not even a question 😄 sleeping with blankets doesn’t compute haha 😄 can’t imagine having to wash a whole blanket all the time rather than just a duvet cover. But I think it’s probably to do with the rubbish climate here! Also generally we use our cutlery in the same hands it’s laid ie fork in left hand and knife in right hand, we don’t cut everything up and then switch our fork to our right hand which I believe is common over there…… although my kids do not and barely even use their cutlery in any way 😅😅 ANYWAY I have waffled on too long!! Must read Jill Duggar’s book!
We don't wash a whole blanket regularly. There is a flat sheet against your skin that you wash regularly. So interesting how different countries do things differently 😅
