A Canadian here who enjoys listening to you both and watching your adventures in life. I'm 79 next month and was with my husband for 60 years. You have a healthy, loving and respectful relationship and long after I'm gone I'm certain you will still be the same. I used to have it bad. I'm good now but I was bad. Like I secretly loved pink but would pretend like I didn't because it made me feel superior all for guys to be able to say that I'm better than the other girls.

I think there's a big generation in Western society right now that was taught to dislike and judge women for about everything. We were taught basically every type of woman is wrong. It's finally shifting away from that, and we're allowed to be who we want, but it really reached a peak in the 2000s and girls growing up at that time had to internalize it.
@gabbiness

I used to have it too, but once I started letting go of the internalized misogyny I realized I was truly a "girly girl" deep inside.

It used to be so bad for me. It came from jealousy and insecurity. Once I got over that I'm a girl's girl and rarely does the internalized misogyny pop up and when it does I shut that shit down immediately.
@neonnwave1

I've personally seen more internalized misandry than internalized misogyny but both are real and have the same roots as to why one would become like that. 1) They're taught to hate themselves and others of the same sex, either by family members, school staff, social media, entertainment, influencers and/or propaganda. 2) They had really bad experiences with the same sex, such as bullying and betrayal. 3) They witnessed others of the same sex do terrible things to other people and/or to their loved ones. 4) They were the only son/daughter in the family thus naturally grew to like and adopt things those around them did and enjoyed, thus thinking what is typically normal for boys/girls is weird. 5) Out of pure jealousy because they aren't getting attention from the opposite sex while others are, thus resort to demonizing and insulting other men/women, portray themselves to be an ally and what the opposite sex desires just to have a chance of getting a romantic partner or laid out of desperation - also known as a 'pick me' (best examples of this are JustPearlyThings, Rachel Wilson, and a good portion of male feminists).

Rachel gave me an existential crisis talking about being a tomboy and how internal Misogyny influenced that. It spoke to me so deeply. I was a huge tomboy and rejected anything girly and tried to be the different kid so bad! It was authentically how I felt at the time but I didn't know it could have been subconciously influenced by misogyny. gah!

You're not alone. I was (unintentionally) raised to believe that those feminine traits/habits/perspectives were frivolous and/or useless, or even straight burdensome. Not true. Not true At All. By quite a few metrics, Japanese and English are the most different languages to each other, at least of the major world languages, and thus the most difficult to learn, so the fact than Jun is as comfortable with English as he is, to the point of using colloquialisms and making jokes, is very impressive.
@Eden_Laika
@Eden_Laika 7 месяцев назад
@phantagirlable The Foreign Service Institute, a sub-department of the US State Department, survayed 63 world languages and ranked them according to difficulty; five were ranked at the highest difficulty, requiring 88 weeks of full time study for fluency: Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. In addition, both the FSI and the National Virtual Translation Centre noted that Japanese was especially challanging even among those five.
@arowace498
@arowace498 7 месяцев назад
@@Eden_Laikabut what parts were they assessing? If they're also assessing the writing part of language then japan is super hard. I think that when people say Japanese is easy they mostly mean pronunciation and grammar and aren't factoring in the writing.
@Eden_Laika
@Eden_Laika 7 месяцев назад
@@arowace498 It was a holistic survay, so looking at fluency in both speech and writing. But in terms of pronounciation, English and Japanese are very phonemically distinct, and there are plenty of videos, including on this channel, of Japanese speakers struggling with English pronounciations. I get that difficulty is largely subjective, but I can't see a Japanese speaker finding English easier than Korean or Mandarin, if only phonologically, especially given how broad English phonotactics are compared to those other languages.
@arowace498
@arowace498 7 месяцев назад
@@Eden_Laika In my experience I think differences in tonality make up a lot of difficulty. If you aren't used to the tones you can't even hear your mispronunciation. I only took Mandarin for a little bit and didn't make any progress... I was quiet young but I don't anticipate I've made any progress on that front. Anyways, English is more tonal than Japanese, which is much more monotone. It's easier to speak flatter than to speak with tones you can't hear. Which is why i think English speakers find Japanese easier, and Japanese speakers find English hard. Going from Japanese to Spanish or visa versa also seems easier. They use most of the same sounds with vowels. Someone in my family took in a Japanese exchange student and they learned more spanish than english, even while living in the US. I thought that was kinda sweet in a way.
@Eden_Laika
@Eden_Laika 7 месяцев назад
@@arowace498 Okay, now I really don't know what you're talking about. Japanese _is_ a tonal language, in that it has pitch-accent, English isn't. Do you mean prosody? Or are you talking about non-phonemic tone, like for expression?

I think internalised misogyny is from shame. We are shamed into conforming. So when we see someone acting outside of what we've been told is proper our brain remembers that shame and replicates it.
@neonnwave1
@neonnwave1 7 месяцев назад
Shame is one of the reasons as to why one would become an internalized misogynist or even an internalized misandrist (personally I've seen more of the latter than the former - depends where you are and what you see). That shaming usually comes from family members, school staff, social media, entertainment, influencers and/or propaganda. There are other reasons as well, such as: -Really bad experiences with the same sex (such as bullying and betrayal) -Witnessed others of the same sex do terrible things to other people and/or to their loved ones -They were the only son/daughter in the family or boy/girl in a friend group thus naturally grew to like and adopt things those around them did and enjoyed, thus thinking what is typically normal for boys/girls is weird -Out of pure jealousy because they aren't getting attention from the opposite sex while others are, thus resort to demonizing and insulting other men/women, portray themselves to be an ally and what the opposite sex desires just to have a chance of getting a romantic partner or laid out of desperation - also known as a 'pick me' (best examples of this are JustPearlyThings, Rachel Wilson, and a good portion of male feminists).

With the I love you conversation. I've been with my husband (1/2 Japanese, grew up til highschool in Kyoto) for 16 years, married for 7. He would never say I love you and neither would his family (Even American mother). His mom recently said when myself and sister in law (also American) came into the family she noticed that everyone started saying I love you more often to each other. But My parents also remember my older sister coming home when she was little and saying that she wanted us to say I love you more. I think that was more of a generational thing, My grandparents on both sides didn't say it very often and were more hard-working farm families. So I think part of it is generational but also cultural. ❤❤

After living in Japan, I love that Jun has stayed true to his Japanese upbringing. He’s so patient and non confrontational. And it’s so true that different languages bring out certain behaviors. I tend to be a mellow person by nature but get more argumentative in English and more judgmental in Spanish (or the mix of both). I definitely communicate differently with my Japanese coworkers. It goes deeper than this - fitting into the social norm and roles to be politically correct in a specific country and being respectful & very polite doesn’t have to mean it is truthful, it might only be acting because you know the social etiquette very well and want to fit right into it because of saying face & not putting negative attention on yourself … but in reality (in your mind & heart) you might not respect the person at all, so it’s all just an act “for the greater good of society” on the other hand, when you truly respect somebody, you might be more outgoing and open with them compared to somebody you don’t consider to be important to you.. but yeah of course you are totally right that there are quite severe, cultural differences.. but I wouldn’t only put it on the “respect” pov. But ion many things… Like you deal with your feelings, emotions, how you express sour self, how you communicate your emotions, feelings etc. being more introverted VS extroverted etc.

For the driving question, I'd say it depends. If you're going somewhere new, or with a lot of traffic, it can help (varies driver to driver). But if it's familiar, having someone comment can be distracting. It can boost anxiety that you're missing things even if you already saw them, or be confusing if you're taking a specific route and are instructed to take conflicting directions. I'm the type who hates back seat driving, for the above reasons XD

As an American, who lives in a foreign country for 7 years now and also has a foreign spouse… I totally get you when you said you are less judgmental. I’m not sure why but it was definitely part of me subconsciously judging everything about people. Living abroad has taught me to chill out and let everyone do what they want.

20:50 - I think it's more if someone's constantly advising your driving. We consider the seat beside the driver's seat the navigator's seat here. I think it's more because it was harder for my mom to navigate on roadtrips when I was sitting up front as a kid ( mom wanted me to see everything). I'm from Canada so unsure if it's just a my family thing or not. Totally understood the internalized misogyny part...I thought it was that but it was more I was always slightly sporty (yoga, dance, gymnastics) and I like pastels. I think I mean I'm not hyper feminine but have found a better balance. I'm still working on it (it does stem from my mom's PTSD from having a rougher childhood).

I would love to see cat wall bridges and other wall mounted DIY or purchased, but installed on the channel, items in the future. I enjoy the sit down and chat videos too but I think the reason I subscribed all that time ago was for the DIY content. Looking forward to what you do next. Thank you for making RU-vid videos and all your hard work.

Hi Rachel! I know this sounds weird but I have panic attacks really randomly and for some reason I don't really know why; your videos take me out of it. I can guarantee that it will pass by the end of the video. Your videos remind me of Miyazaki, how he expresses there is such beauty in the mundane? Which is why it looks so beautiful just to watch a character cut vegetables or go for a walk. I would watch you do literally anything and feel like I've spend time with a comforting friend. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Love this video. It's interesting to see how you have melded your cultures. I've noticed over the years that Jun seems much less formal, and I've always associated the formality with Japanese culture. Americans in general tend to be very informal.

For the car argument I’m totally with ju in Germany we also do that. That we tell the driver when something is coming etc.

20:51 In Iran we mostly say front seat.(صندلی جلو) If we talk about taxi, it instantly implies, front passenger seat. And its not mistaken by driver's seat if you say front seat. Because if you are the driver. You just say "I was driving" when talking about the in car things.

I had the same issue growing up of not wanting to be girly or feminine because I absorbed a lot of misogynistic messages. I like that Rachel can reflect on herself in this way. Jun comes across as above it all somewhat. I think you can do vlog content, or Japanese culture content or relationship content, travel content, cooking content. Literally anything and we'll watch.

I thank my gf too when she points out something I miss in driving, it's completely normal. Though I can tell she is helping, whereas when Mum does it, it can get on my nerves. I think it's more to do with feeling comfortable around them.

As a french living in Japan for a long time, for the backseat driving it all depends to the relationship you have with the driver. Some driver appreciate when people sitting next to them give them advise how they drive or "oh be carreful". But some french, italian that I know have big egos and don't like to be told what to do "watch out etc". For me it's more I want to feel safe as a driver and as a co-pilot so if I am with a "big ego person" I will not say anything. But if I am with someone I trust or recently with my boyfriend we did a roadtrip in Gifu and I was actively a copilot, give him advises, direction etc and we both feel safe this way. It's not that I don't trust him but it's a team work so yeah... really depends to my relationship with the person driving.
