We're revisiting an older video this week. Previously, I only showed the throwing and trimming of these pouring bowls, but this week I'll be covering their entire creation from soft clay, to the finished, reduction fired pieces, including a pouring test to see how well they perform. Since finding your channel, I’ve always really admired the quality of your work. I’m a fine art student and I’m learning to throw at the moment and you teach me a lot, especially about having high standards for what you create and patience throughout their creation, which I feel are both such valuable qualities to have when creating works. I just adore the green and white glazing. Most of the time I don't like the glazing of other ceramic artists, but yours is a truly beautiful color choice! And I appreciate your perfectionism. I love handmade ceramics but never buy them, because I am clumsy and will just break them in no time.

the bit about pushing out into the rib was such a “duh! moment! I think that’s exactly where my last bowl collapsed on me. thanks for your all of your videos, I’m only working with hand building in the class i’m taking right now but since we’re allowed to “self study” outside of class i’ve been making progress for the first time with regular practice and the help of your in-depth dives into the throwing process.

thankyou for walking us through the process of bowl making. i cant make my mind up on which is my favourite. i was surprised that the walls of the bowls made a difference to how they pour. its something i would have never considered, however i will now. the way the glaze breaks on the rim is beautiful.

I learn so much from watching these videos from FG. If I had a fraction of his talent on any day on the wheel, I'd count it as miraculous! But as it is, far far (far) from his skill levels, I still am inspired each time to try to do a little better with each new throw, and I always come away with some insight on how to do things a bit better. Thank you.

I've been watching your videos for some time and they are wonderful. I have been thinking for some time now that it would be interesting to see a series of similar or identical pots that have intentionally stopped at various stages throughout the making process or with various intentional mistakes taken through the final firing process to illustrate how certain processes or mistakes affect the final result. Things like firing an unglazed pot and/or an untrimmed one, one where the glaze hasn't been fettled or cleaned up, one where a portion of the walls or foot have been intentionally trimmed too thinly. Kind of like a snapshot frozen in time of each step of the making process and the errors that can happen along the way with the final result being a fully finished pot. Might be a silly idea but I thought it could be interesting

before pouring I would have prefered the white one with the concave walls, but after seeing the pour I think I now prefer the indented one that pours well.

is there a reason you leave the area of the rim around the spout somewhat flattened/pressed inward, instead of pushing it outward after forming the spout so it returns to a more continuous circle (with the spout sticking off it)? is that an aesthetic choice? or is there a functional reason for it like the geometry of how the liquid pours out or how the clay behaves while working on it?

These bowls are beautiful and the glazes are just spectacular. I love bowls with a spout but as I've used them throughout the years while cooking, I really notice that my favorites are ones where the spout will direct a batter into the right direction of my pour. What purpose would one use these bowls for that have such a narrow spout?

Do the pieces shrink partway to their final dimension during the bisc firing, or does that all happen at the higher temperatures of the final reduction firing?

It happens throughout the entire process. From the moment they’re thrown, as moisture gradually leaves the pot, it’ll shrink, although the most notable change is in the final glaze firing to 1290°C.

Hello Florian How fine of a sieve do you use to insure that all of the particulates are removed from the glazing?

It doesn’t have to be very fine. I use my 80 mesh sieve for the job usually, but the particles of debris tend to be rather large, so I’m sure even a normal, fine kitchen sieve might work.

What are the plugs in the kiln made of? Always scared when you put them back in

Kiln brick, essentially, they can take the heat! As can my fingers, it barely feels warm.

No AI, all recorded and stitched together. I don’t write scripts for these, just narrate as I go and edit the takes to fit. But a film like this might have 1500 separate recordings, I’m not a great natural speaker and sometimes it takes me 5-10 times to say a sentence the way I like it.
