Who chose the books of the Bible? Did Constantine or a church council determine what books are in the Bible? What are the earliest lists of books in the Bible? Michael and Dr. John Byron discuss these questions and a few more in this section of a larger interview.
Full interview: • Can We Trust the New T...
Dr. Byron has a desire to serve both the church and the academy, and, for him, Ashland Theological Seminary has been a wonderful consolidation of those two institutions. ATS is a place where freedom of thought and expression are grounded in commitment to God, and Dr. Byron’s teaching reflects this same emphasis. This appreciation for tension stems from his own Ph.D. studies when he began to realize that easy answers don’t exist, and the Bible, like life, is more complex than most of us will admit.

Wikipedia says cannons weren't even invented until the 1100s. I think this professor needs to do a little more research.

There's that quote at the beginning that talks about how they would come together and read the letters of the apostles and the writings of the prophets. I don't know if just this is just me imposing my opinion but it seems like as they read the apostles' writing and looked at the prophets they were trying to make sense of this mystery. They were taking what they had always believed from the Old Testament and they were adding these new teachings to it and coming up with new conclusions. I feel like maybe that's the difference between a lot of the modern church and the disciples. They knew that they didn't know. They knew there was mystery around this and they were in the midst of trying to understand. There was so much they didn't know, but they admitted that. It was easy to admit because there was this wealth of new knowledge and new events that were unlike the Old Testament but that came from Jesus himself and those who followed him. So they tryied to make sense of it each week as they read more. I think one of the problems we have as a modern church is that we think we already have the answers and so we're not doing a lot of searching. We would rather convert. But we're not so much focusing on converting people from lost to saved, we're working on converting saved people from their theology to our theology. The assumption that we already have understanding means we spend a little time searching and don't let our defenses down and admit we're probably doing a lot of things wrong, have some major misunderstandings, and need to be rescued from ignorance. But I think that is true of myself and probably of the church as a whole. And that's okay. Where we are weak God is strong. When we admit that we are weak and ask him to help he inhabits it and becomes the power that fuels the whole thing.
