What was the first Christian renewal movement? What was the first Christian revival? Now, for many of you, when you think about a revival, you're imagining a week-long series of meetings where a special speaker comes in, and they preach maybe longer sermons, and you may have special music, and that is revival. Now, others, when you think about a revival, you're thinking about mass repentance; culture is being changed. You might be thinking about the first Great Awakening or the Second Great Awakening, Azusa Street, the Methodist movement or Evangelical revival in England or the Moravians, or the Reformation with John Calvin and Martin Luther; these kinds of movements that have shaped the west or if you're in different parts of the world, you might be thinking about movements that were going on in the early 1900s, across China, or Japan, or movements that are going on in Korea, right, there were a variety of different things that were happening, whether it was in India, with a Mukti revival, or a variety of different places across the globe. While there are various ways we might mark revival, whether it's mass repentance or people seeking God, people choosing to come away from culture and live their lives intentionally as followers of Jesus. As we look back across the broad sweep of the history of Christianity, we can point to one time where this was most necessary in the early centuries. And arguably, it came after Christianity had one of its greatest wins in history. And that was in the fourth century when Christianity became an official Roman religion. The first renewal movement happened as a result of Christianity becoming legal.
