Just a word to all hopefuls: we spent nine days in Iceland at the end of October this year and never saw the lights. Ironically, the day we flew back to the US, The lights appeared and thereafter for the next few nights. So, it is really a crapshoot. We were disappointed that we didn’t see them but the trip was still great because we saw so many wonderful things in Iceland. So come with a philosophical attitude and if you get skunked like we did, just plan to come back!
Great information about the lights! I have been to Fairbanks AK to see them quite a few times and even though Fairbanks is fairly small, maybe 45k, there is a lot of light pollution there and so helpful to get away from town for a better experience.
Well done Jewells, your explanation wasn’t the least bit head-spinning! I’ve seen the Midnight Sun in Norway as well as Iceland but haven’t visited either in winter. Yet!
I saw the lights twice while in Alaska. The first time I was at Coldfoot Camp north of the Arctic circle and while flying back to Fairbanks. The second time was at Chena Hot Springs. The excursion took us away from the resort. We stayed in a yurt for about 5 hours. The Aurora was so beautiful dancing in the sky. My daughter was able to get some pretty good pictures with my phone. Thanks for the information 😊
Many years ago, I lived in northern Canada and loved the northern lights. I once even saw them while flying in a jet; that was extra special. I plan a trip to Iceland the end of September 2022 and hope I will see them. Yes, I plan to spend time out in the country.
Thank you for doing a video on the Northern Lights. They are one of the things I've been wanting to see when I visit. Every picture that I've seen of them has been stunning.
I have been twice specifically to see the lights, not a flicker! It really is luck but it is also a really good excuse to come back again. Hopefully early next year i will be there to see them dancing.
Thank you for your video, this helps me get more excited everyday as our January 13 trip to Iceland getting closer… I am turn between not wanting December to go by so quickly and my excitement for January for an Iceland adventure!!
I went to Iceland in August, so I didn’t get to see the northern lights but I definitely want to go back. It’s on my bucket list because I love painting watercolors that feature the lights. I’m also legally blind, so I want to see them in person before my vision gets worse.
Looking to visit Iceland in spring of 2022 (haven't nailed down the details yet), but really hoping to see the lights. If not, I also would love to visit in the summer or fall in the future as well. Thanks for the tips Jewells!
You should have included the Magnetic fields of Earth into the etiology of the Northern Lights - that's why they occur in the Arctic and Antarctic regions of Earth.
This was an excellent video! You are great! I saw the lights in Massachusetts , USA which was very rare. I was young and HAD NO IDEA what I was seeing! It was a faint dancing, undulating redness, mostly. I confess I was kinda high and just was like "Whaa??" later I realized I really did see that because everyone was talking about it! LOL. Would love to come to Iceland and see the big show!
Hello Jewell, this NJ man definitely appreciate and love your video. My intent is to visit Iceland with my daughter to see the Northern Lights. I saw in another video that March and September, the equinox, are the best time. But I believe what you say with regards to October to March/April is best. With that being said. October next year is good? Thanks,
Hello! I’m considering to go to Iceland for northern lights at the beginning of this April (from april 1 to 6), do you think I have a chance to see them? 😊
