Sounds like plague doctors were geniuses who came up with a way to get people to stop pestering them for advice. “Doctor, doctor, doctor, this plague is terrifying, what should I do?” “Are you sick?” “No.” “Do you feel at all unwell?” “Nope.” “Is anyone you know afflicted?” “Not a one.” “...” “So? What should I do?” “Go fart in a jar and sniff it any time you think you’re possibly getting ill.” “... You’re clearly busy, I’ll leave you alone.” “That’s what I thought.”

I lived and worked in Bern in Switzerland in the 1980s just a few minutes away from the Toblerone factory and my first flat was shaped like a Toblerone. It followed the contours of the building which made it triangular. At one end was quite a big lounge/bedroom. In the next part of the triangle was a small kitchen, and at the end (at the point of the triangle) was a tiny toilet and sit up bath. Everyone who saw the flat immediately said "Toblerone!" 😁 When I saw the episode with JImmy Carr it took me back a few years.

Funny thing, that last bit - it's not the only time science has taken something from comedy and made it official. The Far Side comic strip is responsible for giving a name to the spiked tail of a the stegosaurus. Some paleontologists were fans of the strip, liked the name and helped make it legitimate. So, now you all can correctly call the four spikes on a stegosaurus' tail a 'thagomizer'.

Another unfortunate one: Genetics has an enormous number of genes and proteins they need to keep tabs on, so names get silly sometimes and it generally doesn't matter. Except that one codes a protein that is implicated in quite a range of cancers, tooth and tissue development called 'Sonic Hedgehog' Two related proteins are called indian hedgehog and desert hedgehog, but neither are nearly as important as the vidya nom de plume.

@@diogeneticist3585 It means doctors have to talk about a range of cancers, which are very heavy, serious conversations shortly after what can easily be the worst news in someone's life. When they inevitably have to talk genetics, they find out that the gene that is involved is called the 'sonic hedgehog' gene. Leads to thoughts about the doctor being flippant or joking about what really is serious. There have been talks about changing the name.

I cant believe they still spout the nonsensical belief that the Egyptian Pyramids (primarily at Giza) were tombs for Pharaohs when none of the evidence actually suggests that. No mummies inside, no hieroglyphs, no art or artifacts, and the structure is totally unlike a tomb. The fact is, we just don’t truly know their function yet. Most Pharaohs were actually buried in the Valley of the Kings, where all those aforementioned things are present. The ones in Sudan however, I don’t know enough about to say one way or the other.
@MsWonderBunny

There’s no evidence that pyramids were used as tombs apart from the pyramid texts, which name the king buried inside the pyramid and describe what he should do in the afterlife.
