this is installment #3 of my honest portfolio review series. in this episode, i give my honest thoughts on ashley's product design portfolio! the first case study is pretty solid, but i think some of the presentation elements could be improved to better help surface the quality of the work!

OMG!! I love your video! As a student who just transferred to an interaction design-related major, I just started building my portfolio. Your comments are really straightforward and useful. I need someone like you to point out my shortcomings so I can improve. Thank you so much!

How should one approach NDA projects? Is there no possible way to put an NDA project on my portfolio?

Great question 🙋🏾‍♂️

i've seen many people share NDA projects before! this is taken directly from my portfolio guide (templatesbyliz.com/portfolio): If possible, share a 2-3 sentence vague description that includes the company, scope, and scale of the project. Include the project on your portfolio and put “Under NDA. Case study upon request” under the case study. For most companies, you’ll typically be allowed to share your NDA work in a presentation setting. They just don’t want your projects publicly available online. If you’re worried, double check with your manager. If you only have NDA projects, I recommend doing 1-2 side projects, so that you have public work available on your portfolio.

I love the videos! I'm actually curious about your recording setup where you're capturing the screen and your camera at the same time; what software are you using to do that? I just had to do something similar to record a portfolio review and I couldn't get both webcam and screen dialed in where one or the other wasn't choppy.

what questions do you have about product design portfolios?

Could a give a few more examples of side projects for a product design portfolio? I do UX on the marketing side. So just the main and child sites. Occasionally feels more like web design even thought I do my best go work through the UX process when I can. If I would like to make a transition to product. Other than more certification/classes. What are some additional ways I could try and add such work to my portfolio? Thanks!

@@caseinpointsize i don't like giving specific examples for projects because part of the product design process is figuring out what projects to do! product designers should be able to (1) identify a problem and (2) find a solution by using the design process. you can consider doing passion projects and creating work for friends or family!

@@lalizlabeth Perfect thank you! I always hear at this stage (3years) it should be real world projects only. I do my best to go through the UX process with my current projects and find problems to solves within the “redesign” request. Just wasn’t sure if that would be enough. I like the idea of reaching out and trying something new. Even if that’s one “concept” project. Thanks!!!

Hi Elizabeth! wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I appreciate your useful insight. This video's audio is a bit too low, just something to keep in mind for future ones. Other than that it's great. Are you on twitter?
