58:05 Gordy's take on writing should be the first thing anyone learns about writing. It should be framed and made into a poster 😆. I'm glad someone is honest about this. I've found out from personal experience that many self-help books and courses are just a marketing gimmick, and that to a trained eye, a lot of it is just silly.

I think some of those methods can be great for reverse engineering your story to make sure you hit all the beats, but starting from "Go" and pressuring yourself to do all that out of the gate? Hard pass.

This is a great compilation! I was stoked to hear some of them affirm some of my writing processes. I'm one of those writers who HATES outlines! The way I write (and ideas come to me) in one fail swoop. Not every detail/line... Do I just start writing and let the "outline" come in the form of writing a lot of notes in a separate journal about aspect of scenes, character profiles, my research notes, questions, solutions to problems/continuity... I luv rereading my earlier scenes or chapters. Not to make changes or fix problems or add anything. I do it, especially when I put the piece down for a while to make sure I'm coming back to the story with the same voice and rhythm...

"Write a terrible first draft".... This is 100% me. The script I just finished, I had the idea for the story and the ending. Because of the ending, I had the opening. I also had a couple of points in the middle. By the time I finished the final scene, I had 142 pages of absolute dog s.... tuffing. After 8 or 9 times of re-writing, cutting, changing scenes, changing scene order, adding scenes, cutting scenes, tightening up the scenes and dialogue, etc, I have a 112 page script that I'm happy with.

I’m the exact opposite of the second guy, haha- I hate doing the first “no judgement” draft (I always get stuck) and I DREAM of getting to the meticulous edits, bc I enjoy alpha/beta reading for others

I wish they just took mind maps based on the GRINDE principle (of iCanStudy fame) as first drafts. At least it'll be easier to rewrite a mind map that came from a bullet list than a 90-120 page screenplay.

No, you write the story you are curious to explore, not just "first random story" you come up with in the moment.

Random can be good. But it has to be a STORY, not a "this happened, then that happened...and that's why the other thing happened...The End. Stories are about the human experience. So you can do whatever you want, but if you want to write a story, you might want to think about a human problem and observe it in its natural habitat: in your life and everyone else's on planet Earth. Just a thought.
