The reason Leverkusen got Xabi Alonso is pretty simple actually. If he succeeds as manager, they could proudly proclaim that this world class manager started his managing career at leverkusen. On the other hand if he didn't succeed, i mean they were 17th, they were at the bottom, at their lowest. There was basically no risk in taking Alonso because at the point when they took him Leverkusen didn't have european ambitions anymore, so the risk was very low but the reward could be very big.
it's not his first profesional job, it's his first European top league. He was the manager of Real Sociedad B in Spanish second tier which is probably a way better league than many other European ones
@@Fiago yeah yeah I get you. It's just here in Spain B teams can go all the way up to Segunda and play really demanding football. There was a year where Barca B would've got promotion but couldn't because of the first team already being there. It's not like in England where U23 play against each other, here in Spain B teams play against grown men and full teams fighting for promotion and their lifes. I don't know how it works in Germany. As a Real Sociedad fan, I remember him last season at Real Sociedad B in 2nd Spanish division and he was such a good manager. Even though that they got relegated to 3rd division they did really well

Xabi Alonso was always a smart Midfielder from Real Madrid to Liverpool and Bayern, if he is able to lift Leverkusen into top of the league he would be a solid choice for Real Madrid if Ancelotti moves or Bayern if Tuchel leaves.

The thing with players like Xavi/Xabi (and Pep before he established himself) They controlled the game from midfield. They had tactics drilled into their minds far more than any other players because how important they was to the team. Another player that will make an amazing manger if he ever becomes one is Busquets with just how he controls the game on the pitch you can tell he would be a great manger. It's kinda funny how some of the best mangers ever have all played in midfield (Simeone, Ancelotti, Pep, Robson, Jose etc)
That's funny, I was thinking the same thing just the other day. That's unless he's not so good at the interpersonal skills department, which is a key skill for a top manager (aside The Special One and Antonio Conte, of course...)
@@kurofune.uragabay Jose actually played in midfield professionally for a little when he was younger. Conte was a box to box midfielder also. All players who watch the game by scanning would be great mangers. Virtually every player who could read the game as a player has became a decent manger. It's also why a lot of ex players who become mangers aren't so good. (Henry, Ole, Neville) Where as a player like Cruyff could. IMO if they was ever to become mangers themselves it would be why Messi would be better than Ronaldo. Jose also has extremely good interpersonal skills (look what Materazzi said about Jose, he learned the names of all the Inter Milans players wives/children etc)
