This presentation is for those who have already set up a Y-DNA project or are participating in one. We will discuss criteria that can be used for allocating people to the same genetic group/cluster, including genetic distance, the TiP Tool, and “rare” marker values. We will also discuss the potential risk of convergence and how to handle it; what to do beyond the standard Y-DNA-37 marker test and when to test multiple family members in order to triangulate; how Haplogroup (and to a lesser extent Geographic projects) may be informative; and how SNP testing (including the Big Y, YSEQ, and other SNP tests) are transforming the interpretation of standard Y-DNA STR data. We will also touch on the importance of publishing your results as a means of keeping track of what you have done, as a service to project members, and as a way of attracting new recruits.

Simple answer look at the fossils and follow the "node" to all "clades" and count your line 1 monophyletic with that family then note where earth example haplogroup of that exact one (R1 - E1- ect) and don't forget to connect mtDNA of sons

When you get the related to a level 4 instead of 1 which is highly related, is that even anything for a last name search if you have a Western European Y chromosome. I’m asking for my dad because he never met his dad and my dad took this test.

Fathers don't pass y-DNA to their daughters, only sons. Any mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) a father gets from his mother is not passed on to any of his children. Only autosomal DNA is, and you're likely to have about 50% from him, give or take. Any siblings you might have will have got about 50% too, but it ain't likely to be exactly the same 50%, it's pretty much random. With all three types of test, if he's not done it, you're out of luck. All these tests compare your results to the results of other people.

Hopefully by now you might have found your father through dna and building family trees and linking together your dna cousins. In case you don't know: Join facebook group DNA Detectives a wealth of support and knowledge. Test on Ancestry dna for $80 or so, once results are back in 2-4 weeks you can download your raw data to your computer. Then upload to FamilyTreedna, Gedmatch, and Myheritage for Free. Then if you can afford it get a 23 and me dna test just the ancestry for $80 or so. If you get a 2nd cousin match paternal side that's great! Keep in mind it takes time and effort building your tree out. Really helps knowing your mom's side of family as well. I don't know my father neither but I'm close!
