I understand about the knots. I dont get them that often anyway. What makes me crazy is pulling out a huge tangle and i have to spend who knows how long undoing it.

I stopped pulling from the center of a yarn ball, a long time ago. Now I knit from the outside only.

Susan Tunney how come? I typically fund it easier going from the inside.

I didn't see any reason for this glob in the center. I wind my yarn, for my knitting machines, and pull from the center, and I don't get those globs. I wish someone would explain THAT!

"we need to cut our waste and be more environmental conscious" Wraps two skien together in plastic. I get it makes it easier to ship, but A. You could probably get more like 4 skiens in a row (which is what I typically saw when I worked in a retail craft store) to reduce the plastic:skien ratio B. That's just a really bad visual clip to play right after that audio clip.

Interesting vid, thanks. So this is not so much how it's made as final processing and packaging. Still cool. In my experience it's not one or two knots in a skein that makes people peevish, it's when we find five or six that we start using bad words.
@Jacelyn5440
@Jacelyn5440 8 лет назад
I don't want to 'jinx' myself, but I don't believe I have ever found anywhere near 5 or 6 in one skein. I guess it would make most anyone very peevish!
@arianneriley4824
@arianneriley4824 5 лет назад
As mentioned in the video, that's why the yarn is so cheap. It would cost more money (or the company wouldn't make as much profit) if they only sold balls or skeins without knots. Unfortunately, he didn't say that balls or skeins with multiple knots are sold for less than their knot-less counterparts so part of the gamble is (k)not knowing what you'll get ;)
@KristinMoran
@KristinMoran 5 лет назад
If you find that many, contact the company that made the yarn. They will probably ask for information from the ball band and send you replacement yarn or a credit.

a more accurate title would be " how yarn is formed into skeins". The yarn itself arrives to this processing plant already "made".

I have so many of these big skeins right now. The one thing I like about them is I can make so many hats out of one. I make hats for those in need and this yarn goes so far and for the price it is great. The knots don't bother me.

I love the video, but it would be perfectly possible to do it without the knots and with zero waste. Some small manufacturers do this where I live (part of Europe). There's a small piece of machinery in between that sort of combs the end of the first yarn and start of the second, overlap them and then twist them together. The bound is not as strong as rest of the yarn, but it is smooth and once knitted or crocheted, it becomes as strong as rest of it. It's pretty neat. I'm sorry that I can't explain better, I've seen this only once and that kind of machinery isn't my strong point, but I heard it is used quite a lot. Not sure why big manufacturers don't use it, maybe it increases some cost or something, though the yarn that I bought from the one I've seen using this machinery was not expensive. Some small manufacturers also have a person that does this, instead of knotting, but that definitely increases the cost (because of payment of the people who do it, I guess...).

I love to see how different yarns are made and put together. This video I found was very educational and my children liked to see how the ball was made and why there are so many knots in them. They thought it was very good that saving costs less on our pockets and environment and they get to wear a good jumper that's been hand knitted by mum 🙌 thank you Mikey!

Mikey, I know this is not a new video, but I just have to comment on it. I love to see it being made and to know when I pick up a skein in the store -- I will know how it got to be a skein! :) I wonder if a person would get really tired of yarn if they actually get tired of seeing it! I wouldn't like that.
