How you can afford EXPENSIVE CAMERA GEAR

Absolutely loved this video Matti! There is so much valuable information here and I'm sure everybody appreciates you sharing wisdom you've gained through your own personal life experiences. Although I am only 24 years old, I would love to contribute to your message and share a few strategies that I have picked up over the last few years being a young entrepreneur: 1. I never buy things I can't afford. As obvious as it sounds, I make a point of never swiping my credit card to buy something I don't have enough money for. If I can't pay for it in cash (if I wanted to), I don't buy it. Having any debt, and paying interest (even if it's small) can lead to huge sets backs in the future and you can end up playing a game of catch-up for years trying to pay those debts as they accumulate. If you have debt, your priority should be paying it off, before you spend money on things you don't technically "need". 2. If you can't afford to buy certain gear, rent it. Instead of buying that $2000 lens or $1000 light, rent gear for specific shoots and work that into the budget of the video. This will up the production value of your work, improve your portfolio, lead to bigger jobs, without setting you back a whole bunch of cash, or putting you in debt. Once you have saved enough money to invest in gear, buy high quality gear that will hold it's value and not ultra-cheap stuff that'll break and ultimately waste your money. This is best for your business in the long run. 3. Understand that it is important to invest in yourself. Although it can be scary, you have to spend money to make money. A couple years back I sold my Sony A6300 so I could buy an A6500 simply for the in-body image stabilization. Although it might seem insignificant, I truly believe this upgrade was a huge stepping stone in my business. That little detail was enough to make my videos better, particularly if I didn't want to use a gimbal. Getting smooth footage became easier, more convenient, and ultimately had a positive impact on my growth as a freelancer. Thanks for making this video Matti! 👊

I really liked this video and this “lifestyle” can be used for others things you want in life. Like traveling a lot etc. I wanted to add some good tips I’ve learned being a young/ broke filmmaker (if you wanna call me that lol) 1) you can make a great video with a cheap camera if learn how to use it properly. Example: watch Christian Mate Grab new video shot all with a DJI Osmo 2) used camera gear holds its value fairly well. If you buy it for the right price and sell it a year later, you probably won’t lose much/any money. I started with a cheap $200 camera and a year later (a year of saving) sold the camera and bought a $600 camera/ lense and then saved up for awhile to but some nice lenses and then eventually switched to a full frame. So on and so forth. You can start honing your skills now with a cheap camera while saving for the next upgrade. I avoid buying any camera gear new unless I know I’m going to keep it for a long time. Thanks for making this video. I just saved for 4 years for my computer, camera, lenses and gimbal. It wasn't fun but now i own them and didn't pay interest. Such great tips Matti! With all these different, easy formats of spending money (tapping, Apple Pay, etc) it is becoming much simpler to dispose of money and not even realize it. When you factor in those small costs of coffees, eating out, those late night snack cravings, it turns out to be a heap of money in the long run!

Well said Matti. Saved for several months way back in the day for a T2i that I started a business with. Continued to save, and bought a 5D3 that I was able to begin making a decent living from. Sold the 5D3 long ago, but this video brought back a lot of great memories :)

Really appreciate this video. Since I was born I’ve never really bought coffee or new clothes that often. Being able to not be a spender has allowed me to save money. Also, had no debt too! So grateful for that! The only thing that’s different between us is that I’ve lost that drive to work hard that I’ve had most of my life, been kind of just apathetic lately :(

Love the video and tips! Managing our finances is an essential habit to have in our life and maybe business (for some). I’m only 23 and one main lesson I learned growing up is to stop comparing yourself with others. We can get so caught up with gear and watching other people’s video that we tell ourselves I “need” this gear, etc. and we might emotionally make bad decisions/purchases (I’m guilty of this) and then you don’t really use it as much. Just like what Matti said, work hard and save up. If you can’t afford it then don’t buy it. Save up for it or rent the gear. In my opinion, ask yourself this question- what problem will this purchase solve? If you think a particular purchase will help solve a problem with your workflow then ask yourself the financial question- can I afford it or should I just rent it because it is a temporary problem I need to overcome. At the end of the day, if you are making videos/taking pictures as a job or business then you really should run the numbers, research, what is the best investment and do I really need it. If you are doing it as a hobby then I would say just save up and buy it when you can. No need to put yourself in debt for something you’re doing as a hobby and not making money from (yet 😉)

Hey, Matti! I just wanted to take a minute to let you know just how much you hit home with this one. As a Venezuelan, I know exactly just how real it is to yearn for gear which is just beyond your wildest dreams and not just that but fear for your camera whenever you take it out in public. I can also say after a year in Chile that when in a decent economy, you can manage your money in a way to make those goals attainable by living simply and with your eye on the prize down the road. It's funny, since I had no idea we shared this frugal approach to gear and I saw so much of myself in your words. I also wanted to thank you, since I had let photos and video go as a way of making a living when still in Venezuela and just months ago, I took it up again after being inspired by creators/youtubers such as yourself. I really appreciate your work, channel and words.

I want to give you credit on a few things. The first one being having gear makes telling a story easier. I keep hear pros saying you don't need special gear as the are recording on a $16,000 camera. Don't need it, but you are competing against those who have it. And it is nice to see you have not forgotten where you came from. teaching savings. This is a really good video. I think its important for everybody to keep in mind that if you just started with filmmaking like myself you dont need all of that stuff. I would love to have a 1dx but i wouldnt know how to properly use it. My Lumix G80 works totally fine and time will show if i need an upgrade. Having a lot of expensive gear doesnt make you a better filmmaker! Great vid Matti 👍🏻🔥

All of this is amazing advice. Reduce your expenses and you'll be amazed how much money you have. There are so many ways to save money. Selling stuff you don't need is also a great way to get the money for equipment. Awesome video!!!
