Should be fine for a tree of that size

@Japanesemaples cheers Carl. I don't understand why most of the leafs have have gone brown. Get a bit of wind, but not to that extent. Is there any way i can send you photos? Not sure how to do it via tube 🤔

Great tips Carl. Those pots are very reasonably priced - I found similar in B&Q and the Range. I'm going to pot up this weekend if we ever get dry weather. I think you could do with a head-mounted camera soon :D

Hi Marie, I have used Rubbing alcohol, basically nearly pure alcohol and this has worked a treat! It does the job of destroying the aphids, but then evaporates away. Feels like it's better for the environment too. Carl

Acer needs good drainage. So why do you put a piece of material over the pot hole? And what is that little piece of material? Can we put some hydro clay ball to replace the material? Sorry for so many questions. Because I have just started planting acer. Thanks.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
Hi, the material is just landscape fabric and stops the compost falling out really. As it’s designed to be porous excess water flows through it, but it just holds it back a little to get the root ball soaked. The clay pots also absorb excess moisture and as all the compost is moist it encourages the roots to grow and find it. I then don’t water until they are dry ish to encourage this. Great question 👍
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 3 месяца назад
Hi and great question! It’s just landscape fabric that is used inter gravel etc to stop weeds growing. It’s very porous and water drains straight through it, but stops compost blocking or falling through the drainage hole 👍

Another great and helpful video Carl, much appreciated! So it seems you only use the two soil mixes from the bags in 50/50 ratio? You dont add anything really for drainage, like perlite or sand?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
Hi glad you enjoyed! I just use that mix because as long as I don’t over pot them, they stay moist in the hot summer. If you can water daily then a free draining mix could be used. Do note that the pots are porous, so help drainage too. 👍

@@Japanesemaples Yes, just recently I also bought some ceramic pots and it really helps to let everything breathe. My maples are looking beautiful by the way, the bloodgood maple leaved out beautifully, I was concerned about the leaves kinda drooping remember? Looks stunning now! Hope to see more vids soon!

Great video and thank you for posting this informative post. Got a question for you on pots. I’ve opted instead for those “grow bags” - they’re more like semi-rigid felt that claim to be very breathable. I think I overpotted my new Japanese maples using these bags but I’m curious if that is still an issue if they are in fact more breathable than say, a clay pot? The trees are honestly doing fine. My fussiest one is growing really well while the others are “ok.” I say ok because they’re not growing like weeds but they also came from a very different environment to my weird highland Colorado altitude.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 3 месяца назад
I’ve never used or seen reviews of the bag type pots you’ve using, so I can’t really advise. In ceramic pots the drainage needs to be really good and the roots wrapping around the pots is an asset. As long as the bags have these properties then fine. The growth rate of maples vary enormously, from 18 inches or more for say Seiryu to a fewer inches for others. It also takes some a year or more to establish themselves, others take off immediately. 👍

Yes there is a very good chance that if it’s wet the roots will rot!

Thanks for the video 😊 I just discovered you channel and I love it. I have some questions and I would appreciate some guidance: - I have seen people airing (not sure if that's the right word) the roots when repotting. They basically remove most, if not all, of the original compost, leaving the roots loosen. Is that recommended, or is it fine just passing the whole "chunk" to the new pot as you did? - Is it too risky to re-pot now (in late May)? Thanks!
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 4 месяца назад
I think the “slip potting” method I use is perfect, as you can repot at any time in the spring or summer. This method does not disturb the roots at all really, you just need to make sure the tree is ready for repotting. If you watch my latest video on root rotting I make this clear 👍 Personally I think the whole “when to repot” issue is because people repot before the tree is ready. Repotting in the spring is better actually because the tree has the whole season to grow into its new home! 🤔

Here in the uk I never water my orange dream in the ground. I did during the first year it was planted until it got established. You can still use a water meter in the ground to help decide, especially during dry spells 👍

hello, the best mix soil would be in my opinion: 40% quality fibred compost 30% drainage l: pumice, akadama, pouzzolane, pebbles 30% pine bark / coco fiber to adapt dipanding on your area i would also avoid this black compact soil. cheers :)

Thank you for sharing… I have a butterfly Acer in a 6a zone. According to the information provided on the tree, it says that it could grow up to 8 feet tall. I would like to keep the tree in a container. I am to maintain the tree at 6 feet. Would I do any harm by continuously forming the tree to keep it at the 6 feet height. Would it be OK to keep the tree in a container in my zone? any tips would be greatly appreciated. it is a beautiful tree and I do not want to destroy it.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 3 месяца назад
Your tree is rated zone 5-9 and in a pot you generally take of one zone, so should be ok. Butterfly is quite slow growing after the initial growth spurt so yes should be easy to maintain a your desired height. If you can protect the tree from spring frosts and insulate the pot in winter it should be ok 👍

Hiya, just wondering if you've encountered a white powdery substance on the roots? I planted a small seiryu in spring this year and it had that. I left it alone but it doesnt seem to have grown much. Also whenever i water it, it seems to smell a bit moldy. I dont know if that's a bad sign? 😂
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 10 дней назад
Not had that myself but it does sound like overwatering. I always let my trees get a little dry then soak them. The lack of growth is also a symptom of root damage as seiryu is a faster grower 👍

Could be Mycorrhizal fungi, a type of fungi that form a symbiotic relationship with plant roots, providing mutual benefits to both the plant and the fungus!

Thank you for the helpfull videos. I wonder if you have any experience in maples which started to leaf out but then simply stopped at the very beginning. I have a quite a big Garnet which did that this year and I'm not sure if it is lost completely as it still has not leafed out. All my other maples which are in the ground have leafed out already but this one is in a pot and is causing me headaches.
@Japanesemaples

Hi and I’m sorry to say that it’s not looking good if all your other Acers are fine. It’s been crazy wet here in the UK this year and many trees are drowning, especially in pots. They leaf out loosing their winter hibernation resistance but if the leaves don’t grow fast enough to remove enough water from the compost, they get into trouble. I would pull the tree out of its pot and examine the root system. 👍

I never use that recycled compost! People throw all sorts of garden waste out for recycling, not all of it disease or chemical free! I’ve had bindweed in my pots from using it in the past and although not used these days, Glyphosate residue!
