Light painting is the most versatile and easy Photographic technique that allows you to create unique images.
By using an inexpensive torch or flashlight in a dark environment you can “paint” light where you want it to go.
You can control the exposure, colour and direction of light in virtually any scene.
In this video I will be showing you how I light paint a model shoot in an indoor situation.

I haven't done this lighting photography in awhile. Your video did show me to go faster or slower over your subject(s) instead of flashing your light all over the place.

Excellent video but you omitted one detail: how do you focus in the dark when shooting outdoors? In studio you can autofocus when light is on and switch to manual focus. But what is the approach on location? Bring another large powerful torch to use while focusing?
@newcastlephotographycollege
My camera hits focus quite well in low light. I use back button focus so once I have hit focus it stays put. The studio is not as dark as the video indicates so there is still sufficient light for me to focus. If I was shooting in a darker location I could use the torch on the model to focus by. Thank you for your question.

This was an awesome tutorial! The images are stunning. Like you had an elaborate lighting setup or fancy Photoshop retouching. Opens up so many creative possibilities. Especially with how you can “clone” a model in camera. I’m already wondering if quick costume changes are feasible with a slow shutter speed. You’ve gotten me so excited to go out and create. Thank you and please make more videos.

Thank you, from this newer photographer, for providing an inexpensive and creative piece of gear that opens other new options. I'd seen light painting before, but appreciate you taking the time to walk this through. Should provide a fun experiment and a cheap option to have in the bag. The one thing I wanted you to spell out a bit more was your recommendation on minimum luminance values (realizing it is use dependent) and perhaps a few valuable reference models where the batteries hold up etc. I'll head to the hardware store tomorrow, and then talk one of my photogenic friends into something like this. Clearly, it's going to be a work in progress. I noticed you used dark backgrounds for the same reason you wore a dark shirt. Thanks for adding more fun in the kit!
@newcastlephotographycollege
I simply buy the brightest torch I can get at the electronics store. I prefer the ones that can zoom to a very narrow light spread and also zoom out for a wider spread. Thank you for your encouraging comments.

@@newcastlephotographycollege After spending the day looking up LED torches on line, and reading reviews, I suspected that one's that "zoom" were the one you were using in the video. Thanks for the comment back at me. Will let you know in the future how that goes. My photogenic friend already thought it was a fun idea. That's good, because she is a lawyer.

Did the different people's body parts video ever get done? Or can it quickly be explained in text below?

Great tutorial, thanks. For the images in which the models changed sides did you go to bulb mode?
@newcastlephotographycollege
I could have used bulb mode for these shots if I used a remote shutter release but it really wasn't necessary. I just used the shutter speed that gave me enough time to do the light painting.

Loved the information provided in this video. I've always admired light painting. Kudos to Louisa for being such a good model to hold herself so still during the exposures. Loved the double exposures of her! Adding the backlight towards the end really elevated the images to another level. One personal suggestion - Perhaps you could not have the model sitting behind you for the opening several minutes while you're explaining what's about to happen. It's too long a time for her to sit there doing nothing. I was really starting to feel quite anxious for her, which, in turn, was making it more difficult for me to listen to you. Instead, why not just wait until you're ready to start shooting, then introduce the model? Your previous video on the $4 light system was perfect in that sense, for the model, keeping her off-screen until the actual shoot. And...a good solid introduction of her as well! Just a thought.
@newcastlephotographycollege
I agree with everything you have said. I am still growing my You tube skills and video editing. I thank you for your constructive criticism. Feel free to comment on our future YT uploads.

Hi. Thank you or the comment. I used my Nikon 24 - 120mm zoom lens. I use this lens or the crop sensor equivalent for 98% of my images.

@@newcastlephotographycollege I am planning for Z6 II along with Kit lens 24-70 f4 s. As i cannot afford for F2.8 Is it good enough to achieve this method. Please make a video on this.

he shot all these images at f8 so the f2.8 has no effect in this case. the 24-70 is therefore perfect for this@@manumanohar7249
