Don't let Hollywood fool you -- quicksand is not an automatic death sentence. In fact, escaping it is easier than you might think.

Do you live in fear of dying in quicksand? Sure, we all do. But you have to carry on with life and I can make that easier for you. Quicksand, despite its fearsome reputation as swallower of hapless adventurers in places like Gilligan’s Island or -- more arcanely, Fantasy Island - is really just a little baby lamb of a hazard, if you know how to treat it.
Quicksand is merely a combination of sand, clay and water. Theoretically it can occur anywhere these three come together, but it’s typical in marshland, at beaches, near lakes, in swamps. The usual.
Quicksand is created when water seeps up into sand and doesn’t evaporate; it just stays put. The water saturates the sand, loosening the force of friction that normally holds dry sand particles together and creates a stable whole. The presence of water destabilizes sand, creating what’s called a colloid hydrogel. When you or Gilligan find yourself standing on a colloid hydrogel, you will sink.
What saves you is buoyancy. Simply put, water - plain old water - has a density of about 1 gram per cubic centimeter. The human body has an average density just slightly less than that. So ipso facto, humans tend to float in water. Quicksand is about twice as dense as water, which means that a human can float on quicksand like nobody’s business.
The key is remaining calm. Despite what people think, quicksand is usually just a couple of feet deep, not some bottomless pit.
Let’s spell out what to do in the nightmare scenario: Say you’re stuck up to your waist in a pit of quicksand and you can’t feel the bottom with your feet. You’re in a delicate situation. Do you struggle wildly? Do you pull your leg out as quick as you can? No! To pull your leg from quicksand it would take about the same amount of force required to lift a sedan. You wouldn’t want your friends to tie a rope around you and pull you out with a car, either: That would tear you clean in half!
The reason you’re so stuck is because the sand and water were mixed together by the introduction of you to it, making the quicksand more viscous. It’s harder to pull free from than to fall into.
What you want to do is gently wiggle your leg free. This allows water to seep into the space created by your leg movements. This saturates the quicksand, reducing its viscosity, and eventually lets you pull it free. Repeat with the other leg.
As you get more appendages and body parts free, lay back and spread out on top of the quicksand. That increases your surface area, giving you an even better opportunity to float. Once you have your body free and you’re on top of the quicksand, paddle calmly the heck out of there forever and never go back there ever again.

On a similar note, never go to the bottom after you jump off a trestle into a river which immediately runs over a spillway, because the presence of the spillway (or any giant obstacle) causes the most horrific fine layer of silt to accumulate on the bottom. I found this out the hard way, and had I not learned some key scuba moves from my dad, I never would have made it out alive. As it was, I jus BARELY did!

I fell into quicksand when I was younger, on a vacation to Mexico. I had no experience with the stuff, it's not something the teach you about or prepare you to even to expect, so I'm very lucky I got out. It feels like being in an hourglass there's nothing to hold onto and the only way to go is down into the hole. I can honestly say it was one of the craziest experiences I've ever had. It happened so fast, before I knew it I was chest-deep. There was not enough time to yell for help, and I know for a fact that if I had stopped to do so, I would not be here right now.

+Scott Foulk I did this whole sideways frog kick. I had to kick really hard and over and over while grabbing at sand with my arms and sort of pulling up on my side. It's what worked for me.

Quick sand is definitely not that fast. If it was, you would be dead or it would of been extremely easy to paddle out.
@nanichdz

This is what I experienced there's no other explanation I can give for it. Only that I'm happy I'm not dead.
@dogsRoxXD
@dogsRoxXD 7 лет назад
I have an explanation 1. Your lying/exaggerating or 2. It really did happen but when you fell into was mud. For quicksand, if it can swallow you really fast, then you can easily escape just as fast. It cannot swallow you fast and make it difficult for you to escape thats not how it works

The new series The Flash on several occasions has The Flash grab a person and run extremely fast to save said person from a burning building (or other calamity) and deposit this person away from danger. Seems to me, if the Flash grabbed somebody and ran so very fast, that the sudden acceleration would break every bone in the persons body would it not?

Random question. How long will it take for a person to die if they fell in lava feet first?
@BrainStuffShow
@BrainStuffShow 9 лет назад
I don't know the immediate answer... BUT Josh recently did a "What the Stuff?!" episode on the Worst Ways To Die. #1 on the list is falling into lava. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D1Xbt6LuyOE.html You'd burn to death before sinking all the way in.

A few seconds. They burn much faster than they sink. Because lava is WAY MORE VISCOUS than quicksand; ye could, if ye had heat proof shoes, run right across it without trouble. It is more like glass.

BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks Hence why i for one, prefer to take baths in quicksand. Unlike one friend of mine...
@dogsRoxXD
@dogsRoxXD 7 лет назад
+Qeni Arbarhzerohrhoht That depends. If you fell in with a force you would penetrate the top layer and then explode under the surface of the lava as your blood and all the liquid water in your body turns to steam. They actually threw a dead pig into a pit of magma/lava and caused a small eruption due to the exploding pig.

I got it so if it's one mile deep that's real sand but if it's not it's slow quicksand but if it's 5 mile water it's fast quicksand

As a resident of coastal NC I can assure you, there are some DEEP quick pits around. LOL A few things folks forget about in the equation concerning buoyancy. The weight of the sand stuck to you & the added biomass. Clay is not what makes REAL quicksand sticky, its the decaying material (dead leaves, animals and such) in a hole with no drainage. You always know when you are near one here, you start smelling a dead bear, driving a shit truck. No one will volunteer to get in that, so they use clay..LOL

How about lighting sand?
@qeniarbarhzerohrhoht5623
@qeniarbarhzerohrhoht5623 9 лет назад
From the Princess Bride? That's dry quicksand. Unlikely to occur in nature. One of my hypotheses states that wind has to blow into a cavern somewhere, and the resulting turbulence would have to force air through a column of sand, aerating it, drying it out, and producing the desired result. Floating on it is harder than on wet quicksand.

This is mostly right but I could do an entire rant about quicksand in the public opinion. Quicksand is almost what is known as a double myth. First people were so terrified that once someone found themselves in it that it couldn't be escaped it there was an active suction that swallowed them up. Then people went to the other extreme by calling on all these buoyancy explanations, experiments with only sand and said that it was impossible to sink completely under. it turns out both sides are actually wrong, it is more a compromise between the two. It is true that for the most part quicksand is easy so escape as far as you being less dense than it but then again quicksand is made of MANY different substances. There are many types of soil that quicksand is made of. Quicksand is actually rarely made of just sand with alittle bit of clay. If you don't believe me that people can completely sink into quicksand then watch several videos on this site as well as talk to a few people who have. There are several main substances it can be made of such as completely clay, pete, or regular mud that is really deep. Not only is it possible to completely sink all the way under quicksand but some people have completely sunk way under and dug themselves out and survived. Some people will even let themselves sink in quicksand because they like it and know what they are doing. The truth is some people have dies in quicksand, some people have sunk accidentally and escaped, maybe barley and some people will intentionally sink into it out of curiosity, dares or fetish reason. There are actual fetish sites or studies that will make artificial quicksand and have pictures and videos of people going completely under with a vivid meniscus usually closing over their face and then getting back out either in the filmed scene or behind the scenes. One of the major flaws with people saying you can't sink completely under in quicksand is that they assume that it is liquid or near enough to liquid for buoyancy to take over. Most of the time real quicksand is actually closer to solid meaning a handful would not drip through you fingers or a mound of it would roughly hold it's shape. Yes it is soft enough to sink into but it is not a liquid. If you know what you are doing or are careful you can sink into quicksand, go very far under and 'swim' back out, depending on what it is made of. That is an absolute lie that quicksand can not completely envelope a person. If it is the stereotypical sand and water mixture with alittle bit of clay then yes it may be impossible but it is rarely that. This also ignores the fact that an entire fetish industry, hobbyist groups and simply curious people exploring strange things would not exist if it were that difficult. The advise for that kind of quicksand is probably completely accurate but this assumes too many things to even sufficiently describe quicksand.
