Chris from Classic Fiberglass talks to us about something we do every time we trailer the boat that may be damaging the transom of the boat and also about using motor totes. He also talks to us about the need to reseal our motor bolts which also help preserve the integrity of our transoms.

Good video , so no matter how new a boat taking care of it will make it last , that being said to bust a transom out of a ranger or bullet means that person is for sure not taking care of there boat an it’s a shame. This question to mr. smith , how about a hand laid hull 97 stratos 285 pro xl , I assume it has some wood in transom , what my boat is an how I can keep it healthy as long as I can.

@rickw6521
@rickw6521 3 года назад
Aluminum boats have a wooden transom and will do the same. You will break that silicone seal and cause a leak. New boats still don't have them fiber glassed like he does in the video.
@tonyjackson6023
@tonyjackson6023 3 года назад
@@rickw6521 Uh NO they do not. Jon boats like mine use marine ply to mount the little 5hp motor which is removed for transit. Smaller riveted sheet aluminum boats also use marine ply for motor mounting BUT the transoms are aluminum.
@rickw6521
@rickw6521 3 года назад
@@tonyjackson6023 Yes i know they use marine plywood, they don't give them 6 layers of fiber glass....
@tonyjackson6023
@tonyjackson6023 3 года назад
@@rickw6521 What are you talking about??? On thin sheet aluminum for Jon boats up to say 16’, the ply is for simply filling in the motor mounts. No glass needed, Marine ply lasts 50 years!

They're cheaper. Easy to work on. Time tested and proven that their strong and durable. Compression strength of plywood is immense. I just did a cap-off restoration on an older Skeeter. Did it similar as described in the video. I added knee braces to the stringer's and transom, as I also added a jackplate. The downside is it's wood, it will rot. The downside to composite? More expensive, have too know what your doing when mixing and pouring. Don't mix properly, it won't set up, or it'll get extremely hot. Which, if I remember correctly, will weaken it. I respectfully disagree about the old style transom saver's being better. All you need to do is isolate the engine from moving. And have something in place in case the hydraulics bleed off. A chunk of wood is sufficient. Paint it too match the engine , if your worried about aesthetics.
@robertjackson7590
@robertjackson7590 3 года назад
Allison transoms get their strength from aluminum bracing, not the foam. And foam doesn't have the compression strength that ply does. I'd like to see a transom apart on an Allison. Just curious.
@Leebr1966
@Leebr1966 3 года назад
I wonder why they are not doing composite transom replacements. There’s not much you can do with that plywood to make it last long term.

Cliff he said with the glass in between the board he’s never had one fail but he’s had to warranty 2 composites he’s built

@@KenSmithFishing thank you. My brother and I was just discussimg ratchets a couple months ago. He tightens his just so it's taught. Me I was going as tigbt I as could get it. I now do one ratchet less. And if I'm not going to use the boat for a week or two I'll loosen all the way as well as the bow winch to take the pressure off. I have an aluminum and he has a Ranger 520.

You can actually dry out and save a wooden transom if you catch the problem early. The first composite transoms were more prone to rot from water seepage than wood and didn't hold up as well. All glass transoms like on a Bass Cat seem to be the ticket. My old Champion is still good to go. I check my bolts every year for seepage. It has a good deal and I am not about to mess with it.

If you can flex your transom eyes with ratchet straps, it's a junk boat. If you're running a transom saver and the boat is hopping off the bunks even a tiny amount, you're putting terrible shock loading into the gearcase via transom saver. And the larger the set back jackplate, the engine is trying to come straight down and the transom saver is wedging the gearcase away from the hull. The list goes on and on. Been around high performance lightweight hulls for 40 yrs. I have a 1989 model 20ft hull that weight 40% what new hulls weigh, been carrying a v6 with no transom saver for 30 yrs and not a single stress crack or iota of flex. We've run 500bs 20ft hulls that are 25 yrs old with no transom savers and 300+ hp engines and nary a stress crack. Gouging the throttle with positive trim while putting a boat on the trailer is the most buckling force your transom sees. Second to that is barking hard and fast across rough water. If the hull will withstand that, the road isn't a threat. These things can and have been verified with dial indicators affixed to the rear deck and needled onto the transom plate. But he spoke of some very good info about sealant and how it doesn't last forever. Strap-eye movement and jackplate movement can often come from bolt stretch. SS fasteners will stretch after initial torqueing. Come back a week later and retorque. DO NOT gorilla tighten them, makes no sense and helps nothing. Also, put the nut inside the transom, bolt head to the exterior. When retightening, do so at the nut in the interior to not disrupt the exterior seal.
