How you REALLY Should Be Mining | A Mathematical Analysis to Optimising Mining in Minecraft

Ive seen too many youtubers bang on about how useful 'tunnel mining' is - but is it really better?
I hope this addresses the controversy about 'tunnel mining' and why it doesnt always work. To some up - if you have a netherite/gold pickaxe, do NOT tunnel mine in deepslate. Anything below diamond (unless enchanted) is worth crawling with.
EDIT: it's come to my attention that the swift sneak enchantment affects crawling speed - something i was not aware of. Given that Swift Sneak 3 reaches 75% of walking speed, it is very possible that crawl mining WOULD be more efficient. Lets do the math. Given we'll be crouching at 3.24m/s Given that 1/3.24 = 0.34, we are faster than ALL pickaxes unenchanted. Therefore, mining speed will be holding us up. From this, we can conclude that when tunneling, we would in fact be MORE efficient!! Thank you to everyone who commented bringing this up.
ANOTHER EDIT: i need to emphasise that the purpose of this video is to address what many youtubers claim, that 'crawling is more efficient'. i do not believe that walking is more efficient, but i believe it is untrue to say one is more efficient than the other. as many comments (and my video) have shown, the efficiency depends HEAVILY on circumstances of the individual player, and so there is no 'one size fits all'.

Why crawl mining is better 99% of the time: 1. swift sneak 2. sprint crawl 3. speed beacon/potion 4. non-lineair mining if the options above aren’t available (zigzagging/mining a block or two to the side every time you can’t keep up) 5. optimal y lvl mining (for example, when crawl mining you are always mining at y lvl -59 in contrary to mining at both y -59 and -58 which isn’t optimal due to diamond generation) 6. Ore vine generation (since diamond ore without air exposure spawns in bigger vines, exposing blocks further from already exposed blocks is more beneficial as its less likely to expose the same vine of diamonds) 7. Safety on pvp servers (it is harder to catch up to someone crawl mining than someone that mines out a convenient head-hitter tunnel)

@@Lewis12523 appreciate the criticism. with all respect intended, i have a couple of responses. 1/2/3, all these enchantments/effects, while i have mentioned some of them briefly in the description in response to other comments, rely on the fact that the player has grinded far enough to reach this stage. the average player who is in the mines likely does not have access to those kinds of resources. however, your point does stand and i do not disagree with it. 4. i did neglect zig-zag/diagonal mining, i just thought it seemed impractical - i for one have never done that. again, your point does stand, though i would question whether the speed when mining diagonally is enough to keep up. 5. whilst this is true, the changes between 2 y levels are so small one can neglect them, especially given that the change in efficiency between crawling and walking is much more significant. 6. while this is true, the likelihood is blocks will appear by our side/under/above, rather than directly in front of us, whilst i dont know what the mathematical analysis would be (future video perhaps), i would argue that the effects are negligible, again with the effect of speed being more significant. 7. this video is not about safety or pvp, it is about mining efficiency. overall, i need to emphasise that the purpose of this video is to address what many youtubers claim, that 'crawling is more efficient'. i do not believe that walking is more efficient, but i believe it is untrue to say one is more efficient than the other. as your comment, and many others, (and my video) have shown, the efficiency depends HEAVILY on circumstances of the individual player, and so there is no 'one size fits all'. it makes me happy to see people like you analysing and constructively critiquing my videos - science is all about corrections and changes to theories when new evidence is discovered. thank you so much for your contribution - it means a lot!

I've found that if you have speed 2, your crawling speed matches the mining speed speed of an efficiency 5 netherite pickaxe almost perfectly, and you can crawl slightly sideways to get them to match closer

In bedrock edition you crawl much faster than you do in Java. Its better to mine a 1x1 tunnel in bedrock and its better to mine a 2x1 tunnel in Java

crawling is the best method if you want to save durabilty
@industrywater
@industrywater 11 дней назад
while i understand where you're coming from, the issue with your statement is that walking does not reduce durability - it's the fact that we're mining more blocks more quickly. However, this should not be a significant factor, because we are trying to maximise yield, so we are considering which method can mine more blocks/second. By mining more blocks/second, of course our durability will drop more quickly, however i wanted to address that ive seen other youtubers saying 'crawling means mining more efficiently' - they havent actually done the maths so i thought someones got to!
@Willerhide
@Willerhide 10 дней назад
@@industrywater even if crawl mining wasn't faster diamonds per second, it is still always more diamonds per block mined due to revealing more per block mined.
@industrywater
@industrywater 10 дней назад
@Willerhide thats what the entire video is about... the issue im looking into is addressing the claim so many youtubers seem to make that 'crawl mining is better' i have said this in the description and other comments but i still believe crawl mining is NOT always better, which is what i was addressing. assuming a long list of factors (speed/haste/enchantments/speed crawling, all of which are either late game when mining is less important or difficult to do), it will be better in circumstances to crawl, but not always. The goal of mining is to find as much stuff in as short a time possible. with an infinite amount of time, one would find an infinite amount of diamonds. therefore, we aim to make sure that every second we spend in the mines gives rise to as much material possible. this is why the extra block display gained by crawling is NOT always better - in many circumstances it does not offset the slow movement provided by the crawling. i would recommend watching the whole video if you havent to actually understand this - it can be tricky to get your head around. everything ive written is meant in complete respect as a scientific discussion. have a great day IW

@@industrywater yes, in endgame of course you want to mine walking if you're strip mining, but when you're playing at early game/manhun/uhc, suppose you have an iron pickaxe and you start facing a flat wall, you'll walk a total of 125 blocks and the next block your pickaxe will break if you do the og normal stripmining, and you'll reveal a total of (without taking into acount the first 5 blocks at the flat wall) 749 blocks in the wall, let's suppose you use up your entire pickaxe mining in a straight line and then use a second one to mine for any ores you're trying to get However crawling would take you to a distance of 251 blocks total, revealing up to 1005 blocks total, now, of course, a good tool and haste would prob make walking better at any case (however haste 2 has a radius and you'll lose it by mining too far eventually) but if you want to save your resources as much as possible, then crawling is the best Also test mining with swift sneek 3 so your crawling is faster
@industrywater
@industrywater 10 дней назад
@@Drguhasluvd i feel like we're arguing two different things. i agree with you - solely considering durability, crawling is definitely the way to go!

"our movement is slowing us down" - they say, while having to repeatedly stop in order to not hit the wall they're digging into edit: also, bold to assume haste 2 is easier to get while stripmining than speed. i can head into my world right now and disprove this video by repeatedly jamming my head against the block i'm digging while crawling

i guess thats on me, but i guess imperfections are what make art more human... thanks for bringing this up though you'll find that if you try this yourself under similar conditions, you'll get the same result as what i described though as for the second half of your comment - if you get a netherite pickaxe and crawl, i dont think its likely you'll be able to do that - best of luck though!
