How young people join violent extremist groups -- and how to stop them | Erin Marie Saltman

Terrorists and extremists aren't all naturally violent sociopaths -- they're deliberately recruited and radicalized in a process that doesn't fit into a neat pattern. Erin Marie Saltman discusses the push and pull factors that cause people to join extremist groups and explains innovative ways of preventing and countering radicalization.

She has absolutely nailed this topic on the head. It is a shame that this video is so disliked, most probably as people have missed the point completely and taken it as a personal attack on their 'white ethnithity'. Though I can sympathise with those feelings as I myself have dealt with personal attacks or unprovoked criticisms due to my faith or background. This video has been made balanced and we need to understand these sensitive issues and know that terror isn't simply a 'finger' that points to the east. We need to combat all forms of extremist groups and one key ingredient is to understand why people join in the first place and how this can be prevented. Thanks :)

@@serenityskies4477 that's touching and deeply complicated, I'm not sure I know the answer to situations like that. I do know there are some reputable studies that stress how art helps in rehabilitating hardened criminals and many prisons have adopted the idea fervently across the world so I can presume it's at least somewhat effective at changing long term behaviours; but that said, just because a lot of people agree and do the same things doesn't mean they're all right in their beliefs. I think it comes down to expression. When people can express themselves and become engaged in a creative hobby I think it does change the physical wiring in the brain. The neuro science on the brain's plasticity to me seems like corroborating evidence to support my claim too. What do you think?

I would like to have seen this analysis not limited to extremist groups. I feel that non-radicals are just as likely to be biased towards their non-radicalism as radicals tend to be biased towards their radicalism, whereas most people don't seem to agree with the former. That's why I worry when something like this comes up and there's no explicit explanation for why the fact that the view expressed by a group is radical even matters.

I've been reading and listening to a lot of Chomsky lately and I'm starting to feel that some American foreign policy not helping matters when it comes extremism. Sure what this lady is suggesting can only help reach out to individuals who are vulnerable to these groups but ultimately countries and economies need to be allowed to stabilise in there own way culturally. This will allow relationships to be formed and influence over bad or harmful governance.

Everyone is commenting about Antifa, but let me clarify one major distinction between Antifa and the hate groups mentioned in this video. At least Antifa believes everyone is human! The "Alt-right" or White Nationalists excluded racial minorities, while ISIS excludes anyone who isn't muslim. Antifa is not racist against whites, heck most of Antifa is white. So don't get triggered and complain about how TED doesn't include the people I didn't agree with.

i agree, we anti-fascist, in think and say all human are equal and hate because of religion or race is what we are against. but the way we fight the populist and nationalist is not working. the only bit of it working is that many many (to) far-right people feel afraid when they protest if they even dare to, they always hear that their sick way of thinking is challenged by many more people then show op of theirs. this way it limits their messege. but we are not fighting the cause of their extremism. almost none of us try to help them realise what it is they are believing, almost none of us help in preventing them from getting in the negative spiral of thought they go through the years before they would show up at anti islam or anti roma protest. cheers, Jasper , The Netherlands

"Antifa believes everyone is human" which is why antifa burn down buildings, hit people in the head with bicycle locks, and riot and destroy businesses, like in Berkley, and Portland and all across the country? Also I can tell you don't know anything about the topics you are talking about because you claim ISIS excludes anyone who isn't muslim but the vast majority of people killed by ISIS are other muslims. You are right about one thing, most of Antifa is white, which is funny to see a lot of videos on youtube of white Antifa people harassing black conservatives and screaming obscenities and slurs at them.

I agree with most of it but all the socio-psychological remedial actions proposed address symptoms of social differences and inequity not the cause of it; which isn't efficient and thus doesn't succeed in the long term. It's like the US war on drugs a huge publicly funded effort over decades without any concrete improvement. The durable solutions are dealing with social inequity by providing equal opportunity to all. But that's very hard to do as it requires some more advanced social organization form that humans weren't yet capable of establishing: the current best is social-democracy with a plutocracy overlay. Btw, roma's are gypsies and cultures fitness/evolutionary adaptability to a certain planetary context is different, which is why some are prosperous than others.

I am on the side of truth, I've always been huge into science because if you have a question its usually easy to do an experiment to test it and it'll give you tangible evidence that points you towards the truth. I dream of a world where everyone only dies of old age, nobody murders or robs or comits crimes because of money or food. Everyone doesn't work because we have finally reached a point with technology where everything gets its electricity from natural energy sources Iike hydro electric, nuclear power is only for energy on off shore rigs in the ocean instead of weapons that will end Earth. Windmills are all over the ocean, and solar panels are built into everything and robots do most of the work. You can either choose to do nothing and have all the time with your family and friends, go on adventures all for free, or you can choose to work in the few jobs left that mostly deal with maintaining all of these things and robots that make the world turn, or you can chose to work in entertainment. Maybe in a few thousand years we'll be there. We can either be this, or peoples made up beliefs will kill us all.

You know how we all say.. The video is 12 mins long and it was uploaded only 5 mins ago... how can it have so many dislikes... But the current amount of likes are double to that of dislikes.... Why are people liking a video without even seeing it? Blind likers are more in the world than blind haters... That is the major problem of our current society.... SHEEPS.

I really don't see this as much of a problem. If you end up not liking after watching, you can just unlike or dislike. But the people who instantly dislike aren't likely even going to watch the video or properly listen to the vid. That's wrong.
@JohnPavilonis
@JohnPavilonis 7 лет назад
The likes and dislikes can and are being manipulated by youtube and bots, just like how comments and videos are being censored by google. I down voted the video. The message the speaker is presenting is simply about "counter manipulation" to their point of view instead of talking about the truth. Think of it as spy vs. spy or manipulation vs. manipulation. She is trying to convince the viewer to help with the manipulation process or to recruit others to help with her cause.

They've had ratings systems since as far back as I can remember man. And I also remember at some point seeing some of my FAVORITE things in life get 1 star...2 stars....etc. And I was about 15 at the time and just like "Wtf..I LOVED these movies/games, I've watched/played it at least 20 times, how did it rank so low?" Fast forward a few more years and I pretty much outright stopped using rating systems to tell me how much I'll enjoy something, or how "good" it is. Generally speaking the star system on retail stores IS a good metric for product reliability, overall build quality, and general longevity of a product. But for hard to measure things, like "overall usefulness" or "enjoyment" or "ease of using"....well, put it this way, I've seen people give Network Routers on Best Buy's Website a 1-star ranking because they couldn't figure out how to set the damn thing up lol and it comes with an easy to setup CD (I say this as a computer tech whose seen people try to do the DUMBEST things to their computers). So yea....as much as I don't like rating systems either man...I don't see them EVER going away, and for what it's worth, if you're smart enough to know better, they at least help you spot the morons who DONT know better lol and you can adjust your desire to be friends with them accordingly ;)

shantanu kulkarni There were probably a lot of people who got two minutes in, saw no violent far-left groups listed, and assumed it was classic TED Talks' left-leaning bias again. It's a shame, because this video can still easily be used as a reference for countering far-left extremism as well. But I guess nowadays once people pick sides there's no going back. It's a damn shame, to really undersell it.

What she says about far right and Isis also applies to BLM/Antifa. They appear on social media and use their "normal behaviour" to appeal to the masses as more progressive and doing the right thing. Personally, I think neither group should be left unchecked.

This talk has some good parts but it is not intellectually coherent to ignore the religious ideology when talking about extremism. Humans kill each other over religious issues for a very long time. Also, many of these people probably have undiagnosed mental conditions. I recommend searching for a TED Talk where a neuroscientist or psychiatrist talks about what a brains scan can uncover in the case of violent individuals, i can't remember the name of the speaker unfortunately. I also recommend listening to the "Waking up podcast" by Sam Harris. The range of guests he brings on can help create a nuanced view on extremism and his personal opinion has some valid points as well.

I feel like this kind of stuff is why young men are becoming more "extremist" or "alt-right" here in America. They don't have a say, they get publicly shamed for having a though, and are forced to watch the indoctrinating cartoons. It seems like, from mainstream news articles, even myself is now an extremist or terrorist in the United states while I'm just a regular guy. It's not that I'm active or any part of any group but just becuase I agree with the conservative side more than the democrats I feel this way.
@user-mx1rb2vz3v

That's exactly how radicalization stars, they make you feel like you're powerless, conservatives don't hate, they denfend, they conserve, it's in the name, they don't want change, they want the status quo, but the status quo is unequal, racist, homophobic, mysoginist, but you, the white man, their target, aren't mysoginist, you're not homophobic, these SJWs hate you for being a white man, and that illusion of being threatened is what radicalizes young men, the far right grabs these emotions you have and turn them into anger against the people who they're targeting, it's exactly what the video talks about, people in your position are more likely to start consuming more and more right wing media until all your anger is targeted against minorities that they deem as a thread to the status quo
