Symmetry is something like comfort not the thing that excites our senses but rather a point of reference. The more sensitive to beauty you are the more you enjoy asymmetry. Like people who enjoy complex music trained their ears to appreciate more & more dissonant chords. Today's mainstream media produce more comfort than beauty be it in music or in beauty magazine. Since science as got into the matter of beauty it has been industrialized and vulgarized. This is just my observation that I base on both scientific studies and personal philosophy.

7:55 this is such an important concept in evolutionary psychology that is constantly overlooked. The distinction between the proximate cause and the ultimate cause. To often people confuse the inherent arbitrary liking of something to some cognitive extrinsic desire for survival.
@Ak-in5cu
@Ak-in5cu 2 года назад
can you explain in simple words
@arcanewonders9641
@arcanewonders9641 2 года назад
@@Ak-in5cu Sure. I think that a big problem with how most people think of the evolution, is that they believe that people like what they like because of survival. For example, people often phrase the evolution of sexual desire (especially for animals) in such a way where they say stuff like “they look for the most suitable mate, who is healthy and will produce many offspring.” I believe this is false. I believe that evolution causes animals and people are o have certain preferences, but that within the mind of people and animals, there is no consideration of survival, and that these preferences just exist as basic desires in the mind, which have no deeper reason for why they have them, other than that they simply have them. Here is another example. When a person is hungry, they simply want to eat food, just to stop the pain of hunger, and to feel the pleasure of eating. The reason these desires exist is because of evolution caused them to appear. Obviously food is necessary, so people evolved a strong preference to want to eat food. Despite this, people do not eat food because they desire to survive and prolong their existence. This is obvious when you consider that there are many people who eat enough food to become unhealthy and obese. Despite knowing it is unhealthy, and that it is not helping with survival, many obese people still want to eat food, simply because it feels good to do so, and it is painful not to do so. All of this demonstrates that, psychologically, people do not like what they like, and dislike what they dislike, for survival reasons, despite the fact that these preference exist because they help with evolutionary survival.

We would probably see the beautiful people of the future as ugly, depending on how far into the future. In thousands of years we would probably see them as more beautiful, as they would look like the beautiful people of today but there would be a higher quantity of them. In a million years we would probably see them as alien or ape-like, the thought of mating with them may disgust us

Society, culture, inadvertently, tell us what beauty is. Here in the West, it is thin girls, in general, that are the attractive ones. In Africa, the beautiful ones are very fat.
@jeffpalmer9122
@jeffpalmer9122 2 года назад
Here in the Western part of the World, if you look at the old photos from the late 1800s early 1900s, it's clear to see our aesthetics have changed already. The social fabric and technology such as TV, social media magazines and anti-aging advances of our society has changed immensely since then. Therefore who we choose to reproduce with has become more about aesthetics rather than who is seen as a good rancher, farmer and provider or who will make a good homemaker with good childbearing hips (whatever that means). In my opinion, I feel in 200 years from now in the Western side of the world, if we are still able to advance, the majority of the population is going to evolve into a even more very petite, athletic, porcelain skinned faced woman and very tall masculine men. At the pace we are going, our great great grandkids will be looking at photos of us, commenting on how ugly and miserable we look.

Really interesting and well explained. I like the idea that beauty is influencing our brains, and creating the associated physiological reactions, even when we are not consciously looking for or focusing upon it. Taking that notion and applying it to non-human aspects of beauty, it makes an intriguing case for filling the world with beautiful art, beautiful architectural design, beautiful landscapes, etc. to positively influence people.

Actually it isn't a program. That's not how the brain works. It's actually just neuro-chemical reactions that most humans experience. Namely oxytocin, which is strongly associated with warm interpersonal relationships. It also has the effect of making us more likely to have warmth and compassion for those who are like us. Meaning, in turn, creating an "us/them" mentality, which I believe is one reason why there is so much conflict in the world. But, explains in a biological way such behavior emerged in society.

I used to find myself very ugly because of the comments i'd heard about my appearance. During the whole period of human history people have been choosing a beauty standard which is hard to achieve. For example chubbiness used to be the beauty standard till the food started to cost less in Russia. Serfs wanted to look like their landlords because landlords simply lived more , had more money and had a power other them. Nowadays you can also achieve the beauty standard by having plastic surgeries, eating healthy food, going to a gym and etc. but these actions costs a lot of money , so i think that beauty human is a lucky one, who is lucky for being alive when his or her appearance is high to achieve or it is a rich one or it is a one who has a power other someone. Right now i don't even think over my beauty because it's not my cup of tea. I want to be smart, i want to give this world something new. Of course i can be wrong because i didn't mention personal aspect. And i don't think someone will actually read this so it's not that important.

"Beauty is a work in progress-" Well said. Sadly the world is still deeply brutal. Also, it is misleading to imply "people don't view beauty correctly" and then quote Darwin and Freud, both of whom rooted their scientific theory from the perspective that human psyche and human nature is flawed and ugly, with no hope of being otherwise. But how can this be? When we not only seek beauty in an ugly brutal world, we try to replicate it. Thoughts?

Symmetry and shades of color in tldr, but it's actually an interesting question of what makes a person feel uncomfortable or don't have to correct it, usually that comes from a feeling that it's not exhibiting chaotic format and increasing our arousal, meaning if it's not structured as we understand to be a beautiful pattern our mind thinks it's ugly, like if you take away the mindful determinate thinking or sexual human arousal feelings, then all there's nothing really to beauty, that's why cheap beauty is not as attractive if you must think about it in a bigger picture.. but I feel the basis of beauty must be derived from a thoughtful existential feeling to be interesting. And sadly it's quite the crazy drug if you process beauty on a artificial level, making one hyperfocus to look one way at the beautiful not the other, in some way that behavior is not beautiful in the aspect of wholesomeness.

I really liked the first part of the talk, when he spoke about averaging, simmetry and hormones. But after that, the speech became weaker: it doesn't feel like the idea of what is beautiful is changing these days, and all the references to research and experiments didn't support much and were a little confusing, in my opinion.

I really appreciate how he apologized to explain something universal with heterosexual norms. He shone a light and acknowledged(?) a whole community, which is so nice to hear. Great speech as well!

a lot he said makes sense, until the end when he says what we find beautiful is changing. does he really think hundreds of thousands of years of sexual selection preference is just gonna go away because we don't have parasites?

The impressions and advantages are usually limited to the initial duration of interaction. Most often beautiful people also have to prove wrong the notion of beauty without brains and put in extra efforts to prove their worth.

but then again, you only made tests on adults. So it is still possible that perception of beauty is learned. Babies for example do not discriminate, unless they see someone severely disfigured. But that's mainly because disfigurement is uncommon. I don't know if this is taboo, but a suggestion I can give is have babies brains scanned while looking at pictures of both perceived average and aesthetically pleasant, by adults. If there is indeed a significant difference in their reaction parallel to what is perceived as beautiful by adults, only then can you truly say that beauty is part of evolution.

maattthhhh It is an innate trait for newborn babies to prefer symmetrical and attractive faces. This is not a learned behaviour, this can be observed mere hours after a baby is born. A quick google search of "do babies prefer attractive faces" will get you links with numerous scientific studies about the subject. Here's one to start: www.newscientist.com/article/dn6355-babies-prefer-to-gaze-upon-beautiful-faces/

Actually, there are several cases of babies/toddlers going being more open and wanting more contact with women seen as beautiful. (for example, babies were a subject discussed with family and friends sometimes and I learnt I and other people I know were in the same case!)

I'm no scientist and I haven't run any tests, but I can also agree that kids are more harsher on beauty then adults are. However, I can also say that while kids may be harsher on looks, they are more emotionally strong and pure-minded, which is why while they may care about looks, to them they wouldn't consider starving themselves to look 'pretty' like some teens would. then again, it depends on the child.

+Maattthhhh Incorrect. A test conducted on 6 and even 3 month old infants showed when looking at sets of two pictures they spent significantly longer looking at the symmetrical faces rather than the uglier less symmetrical faces. An affinity for symmetry is implicit, I can remember building symmetrical structures with my blocks in kindergarten.

i read somewhere that the only natural fear a baby has is the fear of heights, so it's more than likely their preferences are in fact learned.

I didn't understand his argument for why its not necessary that teens decision for mating is not sub-consciously based on health. The long example given by him in support of his argument, in which he shows Green, Orange and Red color preferences, doesn't make any sense. Because, eventually it does correlate with health somehow. If Green preference is associated with high reproductive success, then it probably does also associate with 'Health' as an unhealthy individual has a poor chance of reproductive success. Any comments?

I don’t think “beautiful” people always get treated better. Sometimes they get treated worse than plain people, like a lot worse. Also your appearance doesn’t have much to do with your overall life or happiness
