He did have development of his own throughout the series such as him overcoming his fear of Atsumu's serves and learning the overhand receive with Kinoshita's help, though most of it was based on his skill progression and his growing relationship with his friends (even if it seems like the only one he still has contact with in the end is Asahi which is really sad :() But I agree! A large part of his development was already completed before the series even started and instead he ended up helping the other characters through their own development and growth and inspiring them to become the best versions of themselves, which is beautiful as well! :)

One of the thing I really liked was how we all thought of course there will be atleast 3 people going pro from karasuno( Noya, Hinata, And Kageyama). It was still 3 people but TSUKI instead of Noya. TSUKI!! The fact that he became genuinely hooked to the game is just awesome.
Yeah! Especially when Asahi is a big scaredy-cat. It must've been really liberating and such a huge leap for Asahi to have joined Nishinoya into the unknown. I'm so proud of our Big Boiii Ace. And I just love it even more that Furudate picked Asahi, out of all people, to join Nishinoya in his adventures into the unknown. I was surprised to hear how common the sentiment among the fanbase was that people think Nishinoya would go pro post-timeskip but then again my perspective comes from a very different angle. I literally knew someone like this back in High School. Someone who had this immense talent but was such a free spirit they never wanted to be tied down to one thing and decided to go on a months long biking expedition around the continental United States as soon as they graduated just because it's what they wanted to do. It's a pretty admirable quality.
His character sort of parallels Osamu in a way. Osamu was also extremely talented in volleyball but ended up pursuing a career in the food industry anyway.
Soccer Stuff yeah there is a difference. But at this point in time Osamu already knew he didn’t love volleyball as much as Atsumu did (their argument when Osamu wasn’t invited to the all japan training camp revealed this). This is probably why he didn’t come off as hardworking as Noya. But I do think he is incredibly talented. His official stats are all 4/5, so he’s extremely balanced. Plus he was able to pull off the quick attack on the first try, and even reverse roles with atsumu to pull off the quick attack with him setting and atsumu spiking, which is truly impressive . But I do agree with you, the situations are only slightly similar, not exactly true parallels.
14:50 I got this message the moment Tendou said he was quitting volleyball. It was a shock to me because initially I assumed these characters would all pursue volleyball. I knew Haikyuu was different at that point.
It makes sense, honestly, and it always bugged me in other sports anime. This is a bunch of teenagers, still in high school. Of course most of them won't go pro, and many of them might decide volleyball is not for them at all after school.

This video made me think about how Nishinoya may be the polar opossite of Oikawa in the sense of the difference between where your/our passion/talent is. Oikawa, on one hand, is someone who doesn't have the talent to highlight in volleyball, the sport where his passion is, and the activity he wants to continue doing for the rest of his life. On the other hand, we have Nishinoya, someone who is recognized by various important players, coaches and general public as a genius, but who doesn't want to play volleyball for the rest of his life and also doesn't have this endless huger to be in the court same as Hinata and Kageyama. This, for me, reaffirms the idea that, as you said, not always our talents will align with what our passion is, and that there is nothing wrong with that. That in the end we just have to do what fulfill us and make us happy. PD: My mother language is spanish, so sorry if my english is a little bit rusty.
I mean, that's such an accurate point... It's a common theme in many sports anime in fact, the reality is that it isn't so much about hard work vs talent, but about how deep someone's love and obsession for the sport is, which will in term determine how long they will stay committed to practicing the sport itself and chasing their success on it.
@@SenshiNico True, and this was now also more established in the recent season 4 with Atsumu and Osamu, where the last mentions that despite both having the same level in terms of abilities, the national coach probably choose Atsumu because his passion and love for volleyball was much bigger than his. In the end, people like Atsumu, kageyama and Hinata (also Oikawa and other more) are different to Nishinoya, because unlike him, they all are "prisoners" of volleyball/the court and not free beings like Noya.

Haikyu really is so complex yet also so simple. It was made clear to us at the beginning that Haikyu was not just a volleyball anime but also a realistic message on the lifestyle of a player, the journey of a person. Reading Haikyu has been such an enjoyable experience I wish I could enjoy once again. The clever callbacks always get me - every quote, banner and panel that either contrasts or improves the current situation post time skip. Furudate-sensei had planned out the majority of Haikyu for a long time and it is very evident in their cyclic structures like the Takeda mentioning faithful meetings and Rio came up or that libero means "free" in Italian. Furudate even used Tenma as a vehicle to push the ideal that "Hey! You don't have to do something forever or similar". It fives the series depth but does not take away the emotional value at all. During the Inrazaki match is when I found out I am not so clear with the character of Noya but that he seems to do his own thing but not out of selfishness. Doing his own thing was freedom. Furudate-sensei showed through various characters that volleyball doesn't have to be the goal. Either it is directly on the court or off. Everything from the struggling uni student to a stay at home dad. Being as well rounded as the team of Nekoma or a simple job that contributes to society. Kita and Noya's roles just made so much sense to me. I took a minute to dawn on Noya but it clicked instantly. Why did it make so much sense? I couldn't be disappointed in something that seemed so out of reach for a free soul like Noya. Imagining him in a sport that restricts his movement ironically when he's outside court could only cage him as you said. It took me a while to realise that the actual farmer is Kita and not Ushijima but for meme purposes, it will be kept. Kita is diligent and patient. One step at a time. The hard work put in is what will determine the result. Pretty much any job could have been given to Kita because of this, but the farmer and his indirect help with still helping the twins are all there. Did I ever think we needed a Kageyama background story? No. But when I got it, again everything viewed has more meaning and thought. I also love that the theme of food - particularly rice was kept to the end. The openness of Hiakyu left to interpretation is a blessing but also a curious itch that won't leave. I am VERY happy the results of nationals was finally revealed and that at least we had a quick run down through Yaichi about what happened throughout the remaining years. Furudate-sensei at the end of the day just wanted people to realise volleyball is fun and I know that I was drawn into the sport and his story. Haikyu was a beautiful emotional ride and I can not wait for the rest of the episodes to be animated, it's definitely my favourite sports series. I can not wait for the possible rundown of Kita and if possible as a series how you think it has been built. I have seen some people still disappointed in the time skip but I think the transition and choice were perfect, I don't think the manga has any flaws but I won't mind being open to the idea.
"The clever callbacks always get me" Same. One example: Those panels in the last chapters when they showed the school banners behind the characters moved me so much. Such splendid character writing by Furudate; I'm pretty sure all major and minor character arcs were wrapped up very nicely.
I was definitely one of the people who really didn’t understand Nishinoya, but again and again, your videos really do change my perception on the characters and the story as a whole. I really enjoyed the analysis, especially how you went into depth explaining the balance between the loud and the quiet sides.

i was never able to put into words how i felt about noya, and this is perfect. nishinoya has always been my favorite character and probably always will be
I wasn't that surprised by Noya not being on a professional team post timeskip, but not because I didn't think he couldn't be on one if he wanted to, but more because I didn't think that was his path to begin with, for a couple reasons. The first case was when Kageyama got chosen for the national training camp, and Noya didn't. At that time, Kageyama and Noya were definitely the best on Karasuno, skills wise. When we get to the camp, we see Kageyama commenting on things that the libero there does that Noya didn't, but there were also things Noya did that they didn't as well. Instead it was more his reaction to not being chosen, that being there wasn't much of one. He was happy for Kageyama, and then for Tsukishima when the Miyagi training camp news came, but wasn't envious of them in the way Hinata was. I felt that this was because he didn't have the same hunger as people like Kageyama and Hinata did, and that's why he wasn't jealous. I also feel like it was because he didn't have this hunger that he wasn't chosen in the first place, since the coach of that camp was seen recognizing that hunger and drive in Hinata, and because most of the people who were at that camp were seen as being a pro, whether that was in the match itself or in cutaways where they showed their team. The second reason is much smaller, but still important towards me realizing Noya's goals. When Hinata has those breakthroughs in receiving in Nationals, Noya is the first person to realize that they aren't flukes, and they were something Hinata was trying to do. And he was proud of Hinata. While I feel like other people such as Suga were also proud of Hinata, I feel like they were proud in different ways. I feel like Suga and the others were proud of Hinata in a "wow look how much improvement he's made in a short time, and just when we needed it, too" kind of way, which there's nothing wrong with. And I feel like there was part of that in Noya's reaction, however I feel like there was more than that. From Hinata's and Noya's very first meeting, where they compared heights, Noya's known that Hinata has more of a drive for the sport itself than Noya himself does. I feel like this was because Noya recognized that being a libero was easier for shorter people than any other role, and since he just valued doing it for the team he went with that, whereas Hinata wanted to be someone attacking, like a middle blocker in the case of Karasuno. He recognized that Hinata was taking the more difficult path for someone of their heights, and therefore I feel like when he saw Hinata making those receives cleanly for the first time, his type of proud was more along the lines of "you're making your first steps towards getting to where you want to be". I feel like this is different because the only ones who really recognized that Hinata needed to start making those first steps when he started making them were Hinata, Ukai, Kageyama, and Noya himself. The rest of the team were okay with slow and steady improvement, on top of his already strong quick attacks. But I feel like his reaction to Hinata's receives were because while he recognized that Hinata was taking the steps necessary for him to become a pro, and was proud of him for hit, he wasn't taking any steps to get there himself, and instead was just enjoying watching Hinata succeed.
to me the two timeskip returns that hit me the hardest were definitely Nishinoya and Kita (who I'm glad you mentioned as well). bonus mention to Osamu and his dynamic with Atsumu. They were all perfect for me, and have stuck in my mind ever since they appeared, along with a few others like Hirugami and Tenma Udai during the kamomedai game. Furudate is a genius they manage to shake me to my core with these very real characters and stories. I am also so incredibly happy to see him and asahi chilling in egypt lol good for them it's nice to see asahi happy
all the characters u mentioned (minus nishinoya) i was kinda expectin 2 not b goin pro but it was still sortuva bittersweet thing seein em not playin vb posttimeskip. although it was nice seein em happy tho! but they REALLY honed in on the idea in this video w noya and hirugmai i feel like
man the final few chapters were almost like a love letter from Furudate sensei to us fans. It was legit just a compilation of all the best bois being best bois, paired with some of the most visually gratifying depictions of Volleyball I have ever seen in my life. Actually, thinking back, I'm pretty sure Furudate sensei has played Volleyball on a very serious level or at least been in the Volleyball club at highschool. Why? Because I AM playing Volleyball at Highschool and on a semi-serious level (I'm pretty serious, but most of my teammates aren't -.-), and Haikyuu is just way too accurate and relatable!!! I don't know how to thank this amazing mangaka for creating such a masterpiece...
A funny but interesting thought: Nishinoya's decision of what to do with his life means he's probably out there living a bunch of different anime. Haikyuu was just the start, but now he gets to experience a bunch of others. If anyone is going to end up stumbling into another anime, it's probably him.
This has been my favourite series of all time. The ending left me satisfied but still hoping it would continue. I would have love to see a chapter going over each of the character story. I would have loved to see Tanaka as the ace and the new group. Overall I loved this story and how it was wrapped up I just wish it could have gone on a bit longer
holy shit- this very unexpectedly made me tear up a little. your analysis of him and especially the part where it said “he doesn’t have a hunger for volleyball, but for what volleyball means to him” made me feel so happy because that’s the exact same way i think. i just want to do things that make me happy in life, and i’ve always felt pressured to not think like that, to be a high achiever and build off of my talents. but seeing these ideals through one of my favorite characters made me feel so understood and validated. thank you. i cant believe i never realized how similar i am to him
You know, what's really great for me is that I did not find his post timeskip choices to be out of character. I just thought 'Oh, of course Noya would be doing something like this' And even thinking about it now, I never did get the impression from him that he would want to play volleyball at a pro level.
i love how you structure your video essays. you intersperse clips from the actual series with your analysis, which makes for great transitions and provides microcosmic examples of the points you make. it really lets the subtleties of the character shine through in ways that i wouldn’t have considered or pieced together before.
This genuinely has changed my outlook on life. The other day I was thinking, what if you don't get your dream job then your life would be pointless. Its funny because of how wrong I am to think that way. It's never over there's always something to do and not doing them is a waste.

I felt the same way as you, where I've always liked Noya but he wasn't a fave fave, and this video just bumped him way up my list. When post-timeskip Noya was revealed, I could kind of understand why he didn't go the pro-vb route based on his free-spirited nature but I was still disappointed he didn't go pro. This video beautifully elaborated on his personality, goals, and philosophy in an easy to digest manner that made me fully accept post-timeskip Noya. The message about how just because you're good at something doesn't mean you want or have to keep doing it even if it's what everyone expects is so powerful. It's something that I can personally relate to but somehow forgot over the course of time, so being reminded of it was like a slap to my face (or a volleyball to my face?). Finally, you're back with a bang! This video is one of the best character analysis videos I've ever seen. Perfect from start to finish and shows Haikyuu in a different light. Not everyone talented is meant to play and not everyone who wants to play is talented. its just life. You end up doing things that aren't your passion and even excel, but that doesn't bring true happiness and satisfaction. On the flip side, you get a feeling of joy and excitement if you try the things you're actually passionate about - not worrying about failure or what everyone around you says. Nishinoya is actually summed up by what previous coach Ukai used to say-" You need to be good to be free". Noya just wants to be best at everything that makes his heart pounding. He is just like the universe- changing constantly for the better or worse.
I remember how shocked I was to find that my favorite player didn't go pro like I expected, but instead went travelling around the world. However, the shock didn't last long before I realized that this was the most "noya" thing that our wild, free-spirited noya could've done.
Personally, I remember a while back, I was kinda out of Haikyuu, like I wasn't really interested in it anymore, so I told one of my friends that he could spoil it to me since he really wanted to talk to someone about it. When he told what happened to Nishinoya, I was like, "I didn't expect that, but it really does make sense." And ironically, I've been a bit more interested into Haikyuu recently because I remembered how much I loved the kid.

But that doesn't mean that the people who don't read it properly have a leg to stand on, since it's very clear already. If someone reads that as an anime only and doesn't at least have SOME hesitation when seeing it, it's on them for not either asking or checking the description before watching the thing. And that shouldn't be necessary anyway. Of course it could have been worded better, but it was worded just fine regardless. Btw I asked on Patreon, and Alec legitimately just wasn't aware that there would be any issues with the wording and there was no intentional abstraction, he just wanted the video to age better in a few years when the anime is done, and "ENTIRE STORY FROM START TO FINISH" ages better than "MANGA SPOILERS" when both anime and manga are fully adapted. @@TheDionysiac But those people were unwittingly spoiled because they made a stupid decision after reading the spoiler or didn't read the spoiler at all. He says he'll do spoilers differently and like I just told you he said he just didn't even realize that he even needed to be even more explicit so he's already accepted a bit of responsibility, but any more than a little is unfair because it is still more than an adequate warning. It says "entire story from start to finish" in the video itself, and it says that PLUS manga spoilers in the first line of the description. It wasn't done perfectly but it's still primarily the fault of the viewer if they go into an analysis of an incomplete anime and ignore all that.

Amazing video as always! Your thoughts really encapsulates Noya as a character and my love for him! A lot of people characterize him as someone who is immature and kinda of an idiot (and to some degree he may be one) but I've always felt that the reason he is that way is because he's already realized what kind of person he wants to be which is amazing for a high school student to even realize. :D

I wasn't surprised when Noya at the time skip wasn't playing Volleyball. Whenever I watched him in the anime or read his lines on the manga, he was a spirit that was different from the rest and you could tell from his eyes. I loved how the Manga artists and even the Anime artists had really nailed down those few second shots of just their eyes or body movement because it says a thousand words with a single glance or a small turn without a word being taken. They capture what the characters feel without needing any excess words being said. Noya had a talent for Volleyball and he sure as hell took that talent and made it an experience HE wanted. Once he had taken every bit of experience down to the drop, he'll go and search for another new experience, whether he had to work his way up from the bottom again. And I love that about him. He went from being scared of everything to trying out everything he possibly can, bad or good. And many people envy that while many people are like that too. Him traveling around the world was just part of that process. Just part of him that said "Hey... why not? Why not just go for it and try?" Because that's who he was and is and forever will be. I personally loved his grandfather for the small few pages he was in. You could tell that he was a free spirit too. He wasn't like that stereotypical "rich grandpa with hot yoing girls" He sure as he'll had a free spirit. Teaching Noya that being like that wasn't a bad thing and that being scared isn't bad but also such a wasteful thing. Life is far too short, if you're scared to try things out, you'll end up wasting valuable time and experience, you'll live in regret "I should've done it." "Why was I scared?" And life is too short to be wasting it on those thoughts.
Aleczandxr, I swear I hate watching your Haikyuu!! videos because you really make me emotional and I hate my emotions so much ajgfhjdsgfgsg but as usual you are so right. When I first saw the spread of Nishinoya fishing I was honestly disappointed but not surprised because it just made so much sense, Yu was always a free spirit, pure energy that found itself going where ever it wants to. So seeing him across the world doing something as random as fishing made so so much sense and I couldn't be mad because he looked so happy and just as full of life as he always did. My main disappointment is that we didn't get to hear anything else from him, we see a shot of him in Italy and then two photographs and that's it (but I guess that's just part of my burning insistence that Karasuno deserved better as a whole so nvm) Also I think him being called the guardian deity is what fully cemented his life choice to be the right one in my eyes. He was a guardian and was there when he was needed but once he graduated he had finished serving his duty to Karasuno and needed to find his place elsewhere. Nishinoya was one of the first characters I fell in love with so to see him happy and living his life to the fullest really made me tear up which I'm doing all over again because of this video so thank you ♡
I'm a libero too. And I love voleyball a lot. But I don't see it as in a pro way. It's also kinda hard for us liberos to get the vibe the other players does. We don't get understood. We are the teams legs and arms. We help the team to stand on their foots and get up with pushing the ground with our hands to get up and carry on. I want to be a doctor now :) I want to work at different countries and experience the people of other places. I'm very happy that Noya choosed that path! I hope to be as usefull and strong as he was in the future. I want to be free just like him :) He was also my first ever anime crush o///o
Hey Alec, hard lurker here. Thank you for your insight on Nishinoya about him being a person who values the experience of life itself and the novelty of living for that experience. He has no concrete "purpose" of achieving something and is a huge exception to the idea that an individual needs a purpose grounded in some one thing to progress through, better oneself and experience life. I always looked to and idolized Hinata in his unwavering passion for volleyball that carried him through life, coloring it and thus him making the most it. I yearned so much for that for myself but I've never had that one thing or even 2-3 major passions I could live my life through. I feel trapped, not advancing forward thinking I need that "thing" to live but Nishinoya shows me that you don't have to posses that, that you can yearn and be passionate for the experience of life itself how you want it. Like it seems like such a simple and liberating way to live. It gives me hope that I can experience the juices of life just for itself..... Idk what I'm saying, took me an hour to write this haha. Thank you
I really get what you mean, I have used hinata' hunger for volleyball as a form of motivation despite his setbacks and thought how to apply to my life(it's in need of motivation) but I could not get the drive until this video which explains to me why I loved the intro of noya-sa and his embodiment of freedom in whatever you pursuit, it reminds me of one piece and it's themes and I have to say a big thank you to Alec, and furudate sensei ( maybe also one piece but this is a Haikyuu vid)

I similarly adore Noya for all these reasons and more. People always say they don’t understand why I go through what they call ‘phases’. I start learning a new language or pick up a new skill or get invested in a new tv show or something. Sometimes those things stick and sometimes they don’t, but that doesn’t mean the experience I got from them is any less valuable. To those people who don’t understand, I’d show them Noya. Someone who invested years of his life into a sport but then didn’t peruse it further. The fact that he didn’t continue, didn’t become the best or ‘wasted his talent’ by stopping doesn’t mean that the experiences he had are any less valuable. When you start learning a language and then stop, yeah you might forget a few things but there’s still a certain amount of knowledge you have gained, and you still experienced that period of learning. He is a great role model for those who don’t want to try things because of fear or because effort doesn’t always manifest in success or because this thing might not become their be all and end all. Just do things for the experience because it’s so valuable!!!! Start learning a language knowing it’s ok to give up if you want because you still tried and will still probably remember some things. Pick up a new skill or sport because that act of learning can never be taken away from you even if you stop doing it. Heck, just try watching that tv show only to quit after the first season because even if you ended up not liking it, you probably at least gained something from that experience. This is probably the most important life lesson I have ever learnt and one that I will continue to share because it’s so rewarding.

His ending reminds me kind of the Smile's one on Ping Pong the animation, where Smile decides not going pro and being a teacher, besides he was the 2nd best player of all Japan, and just with being a teacher he is happy again.

Honestly I think we should have seen this coming. If his goal in life had really been to pursue volleyball as a career, he pretty much had his pick of the powerhouse schools after graduation. He was just that good. He probably could have ended up at any one of them if he had wanted to. But he chose instead to go to a school for seemingly superficial, but still very important to him, reasons. His focus has always been on living life in the moment and making it the best experience he can. Heck, if his goal had been to pursue volleyball as a career, he also wouldn't have quit the team when Asahi left. But he did, because that would have ruined the experience of the game for him. Contrast that with Hinata and Kageyama's reasons for choosing Karasuno: both to pursue volleyball even further and grow as players. It's also likely for that reason that Noya didn't find a need to censor himself and present himself as a more ideal candidate for the All-Japan and why he never ever felt any jealousy towards his teammates when they succeeded in an area he didn't, unlike his other teammates who did on occasion, even if they were also happy for them. How could he, when he already had everything he wanted?
Damn your videos are good. I too was surprised at first but it just makes so much sense when you think about it. Also noyas way of thinking is what I recommend everyone should be thinking like. Just do whatever you want and do not give a f what anyone thinks bout you.
