a special human being? like would your depiction of the greatest sports figure include his bashing of other opponents, arrogance and ego, and the fact he was a womanizer? please...
@BostonWhoFan515
@BostonWhoFan515 9 лет назад
***** I said special, not perfect.
@jesus7es7dios7
@jesus7es7dios7 9 лет назад
Iron Mike Well my comment goes to both either special or perfect.... By the way, there's nothing special (in the positive framework) of a tongue like that of Ali... or Weather Jr. the third.... or MIKE TYSON HIMSELF.... their behavior further feeds the existing labels which portray blacks in America... and I'm sure you are aware of this.
@BostonWhoFan515
@BostonWhoFan515 9 лет назад
***** I'm sure black people look at Ail as an iconic American figure. And rightfully so. His position on the draft was epic. I love Tyson and Mayweather too but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're American icons. In the ring yeah, but they pale in comparison to the charisma Ali had. I'm not trying to argue with you. You're free to feel however you want. But I really urge you to reconsider your outlook on Ali. Whether you do or don't is up to you. Ali's is the man my friend.
@jesus7es7dios7
@jesus7es7dios7 9 лет назад
Iron Mike They hear what they want to hear... they see what they want to see... Of course, if there is no moral compass to follow and no shame of the behaviors a group of people commit, then how would they ever evolve from their condition.... IN OTHER WORDS, you don't understand how perverse it is to pervert an entire sport by acting how ali acted.... how weather jr. the thirds acts out... how mike "ears" Tyson behaved... I'm not talking about their boxing... i'm talking about their behaviors.... and the fact is that the world is lost because they actually admire people like this in the name of "sportsmanship".... But anyways.... there's nothing to discuss with you.... I maintain my above statement ...

I actually saw the 1980 interview in which Ali was announcing his "retirement" from boxing (30:00). I vividly remember, because I remember how disturbed I was because of Ali's slurred speech. It was the first time that I had seen him speak so slowly, and it puzzled me. I thought to myself, "well, he must be really tired." But now I see now that he was showing early signs of Parkinsons.

@@boxeolocopunch762 That's speculative. Parkinsons affects the muscle used for speech and can greatly inhibit one's capacity to communicate. Ali was destined to lose those last fights in his career and I knew it was going to happen based on how energy-less his voice was during pre and post fight interviews. When he lost "it" he really lost it. And during those interviews I personally believe he was in the early stages of Parkinson's disease. Still Ali will stand as one of the greatest of all time. If not for the time he lost during incarceration in his prime years it's very possible at least in my mind that he could have undoubtedly been the greatest heavyweight of all time.

The Wepner fight is when you start seeing the parkinsons shortly prior. During the tv show with Ali/wepner on stage. The videos are on youtube in two parts. His speech is slurred at times and he studders a good bit on occasion. It really shows after the Shavers fight and in the roach spray commercial. From then on its obvious but the signs are there after the Foreman fight and before the Wepner fight if you look close. I agree with what you said.

This brings back memories! My Dad loved boxing and both of these guys. If they were coming on ABC Wide World he'd drop what're he was doing and watch these guys joust-cuz you never knew what they'd say (2:15-6:50), but you knew it'd be good! These two became best friends, almost family. Howard was like a harsh dad or uncle lecturing his teen son/nephew like he was still 12. But Muhammed was more like a teen or 21 you who's not going to take that family brow beating. TV Sports has never had anything as good as these two. My Dad was like Howard, to me, and others-a provocateur Smart Alec, having some fun with Ali. The Champ would be serious-, professional, nice three-piece suit with tie. Howard would get his goat and you'd then a ee Cassius Clay emerge-and he didn't take any crap. Ya da! Howard would have the interview that audiences wanted to see-the cocky Ali dishing it out. My Dad chuckled at me the same way Cosell did at Muhammed, declaring victory. What heady days. Such an endorphin rush, back in time. You had to be there. Great post! Merci and Gracias. I'm reading a book called "Sound and Fury: Two Powerful Lives, One Fateful Friendship " by Dave Kindred. Tt's about Ali's and Cosell's relationship. Go to 15:55 of the video, the question about Ali's financial situation. The book tells that this question had to be redone to what we see here, here is what happened previous:

It seems that Ali's illness was beginning to show in his speech when Ali talked to Cosell after announcing his retirement. How did it go so unnoticed that he fought a few more fights, risking to get really hurt?
