FYI - ESPN radio was Mike Couzens; Boog Sciambi did TV. Hard to have the correctly-slanted call. You won;t see one on FOX/FS1 or TBS I was waiting for the one from the team, where you DID have a rooting interest. THIS WAS IT! Another bit of 24-karat gold from Howie Rose (other was this: "Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!" IYKYK) Put it in the books!
ESPN tries so hard to ruin every sporting event they telecast. But if the game is a good one, people will watch it. For me, I just turn the sound down.

I'm SO glad to report that I listened to the entire game on the radio and Howie's call was utterly electric! He is EASILY the best in the business. And he told his young colleague Keith Raad, who is in his first season broadcasting for the Mets, to retire because he may never see another game as exciting as that one! Wonderful! Thank you so much for posting!
Yanks fan but NY fan overall - F Boston and Philly - I was jacked up watching Pete come through. Good for him! Howie showing why he’s the best! What a call!
Same. Grew up Yanks house in Brooklyn, but we never didn't also like our Mets. Happy for Mets Nation today, and now that I live in the Phillies' zone of influence, lol, I look forward to having the Mets surprise THEM, next! Let's go Subway Series!
Same I’m a Mets fan thru and thru but always will root for the Yankees if the Mets are out of the picture. As a New Yorker Gotta root for New York never understood the Mets fans having Yankees slander unless of course it’s in a subway series. Anyways LFGM 🎉
What I loved most about this… When Alonso missed the fly ball in foul territory, when they played it back in slow motion, you could see the brewers fans screaming and laughing and heckling him. And the disappointment in Pete’s face at missing that relatively easy fly ball out. And then…….LEGEND . What a moment.
Growing up I was a Yankee fan and my best friend was a Met fan but we both loved putting on the radio and listening to Bob Murphy especially when Kingman was up "Hammered FOUL" I can still hear that in my head LOL those were the days
I went to college (Queens College, in NYC) and remember Howie when we both worked on the college paper. He is a local Queens boy and can guarantee he was freaking out over this Mets win.
Compare the drama that Rose created there with the live ESPN broadcast.. There is no comparison. An amazing broadcaster. I'm sure he's in every Mets HOF already, but Howie should eventually be one of the Frick honorees in Cooperstown.
Giants fan here.. A congratulations to the New York Mets and all their fans 🍾 also thank you Howie Rose for reminding us how great and beautiful this game is. What a moment this was. The Dream. The Struggle. The Victory!
Great call by the legendary Howie Rose that HE DID IT...HE DID IT was almost like the MATTEAU....MATTEAU call in the Stanley Cup East Conference Finals Rangers vs Devils...this gave me goosebumps well done Howie 👏 ✔️ 👍
Howie should realize that all NY NL teams who had their origin at the Polo Grounds always score 4 runs in the ninth on Oct.3 to win a post season series. 10-3-51-The Giants win the pennant 10-3-62-The Giants again win the pennant.
John Sterling is a legend and is supposed to come out of retirement for the Yankees postseason. I agree with you on Kay, just too many of the same calls and just feels like he’s going off the team’s energy instead of creating his own. Gary Cohen and his booth will always be the best in baseball though for the Mets!
The best announcer the Yankees had was Ken Singleton, albeit he chose, tacitly and gracefully, to retire rather than withstand another season of Michael Kay's egotistical diatribes.
@@josephdepre4513 yes I enjoyed listening to Singleton but I go back to the mid-70s when I started watching and I always enjoyed listening to Rizzuto Bill White and Frank Messer, Rizzuto could keep you interested in a 13-0 game
@@Jetsfan365-h3fyou are so correct about the Scooter. He and Bill White were a treasure to listen too. Everyone knew Phil’s favorite movie was “North By Northwest.” Once Cary Grant was at a Yankee game and when the camera pointed him out Phil went crazy. RIP Phil and Cora.
"Pete Alonso keeps this fairy tale season going with the fairy tale swing of his career". Shades of Vin Skully in 1988, "In a season so improbable, the impossible has happened."
Thanks for mentioning the late Vin Scully. I was born in LA/1950, listened to him religiously. When I realized I wasn't going to be a centerfielder in the big leagues, I wanted to be like him. 1 problem, mic fright.
Howie foreshadowing like he knew something big was happening. Best radio play-by-play guy ever. From Matteau-Matteau-Matteau to this and so much in between.
I gave up on the game and began driving home 5 minutes before this and was listening on the radio. I think it was destiny so I could hear Howie call this. HE DID IT
One of the most historical HR’s ever! It is only because it won the first Wild Card series it may not be considered but it is one of the greatest clutch hr’s ever! 1 out in the top of 9…its hard to think of a better at bat from anyone.
Calm down. Its one hit. He has not been good for two seasons. The Mets cant go and throw $40mil per year into a .240 power hitter who doesnt hit for power in clutch situations. Thats how you wreck a franchise. That being said we love Pete and are pulling for him. Hope he goes on a tear the rest of the playoffs and leads us to a World Series championship.
@@mr.nobody9697 I'm not a Mets fan, so don't tell em to calm down, kid. The point is he's your best power hitter, your first baseman, the most popular player on the team, and he just had the biggest hit you've had in a decade. So are you in or out on Alonzo? If you're out, what are you doing at 1B? Without him, you'd be out of the playoffs. so now what?
@@InvestBetter. Yes all that is true but the reality is the mets are not going to pay him 30+mil a year for the next 10 years. The mets are likely going after Juan Soto which would be money better spent. Do i want Pete back? Sure. But im a fan not the owner or the gm whos money is on the line.
Let's Go Met's from London! It was The Natural.....for real.....slumping hitter.....facing oblivion....batters on base......last moment......."outtahere!!!!!"
In 1984 I worked on Howie’s Monday Night Sports show at Cox Cable in Great Neck. Howie Rose was the consummate gentleman and was great fun to work for. It was a 1 hour show with guests like Islanders and 1 very memorable guest Jack Lange. Many times the guests would stick around after the show and all of us in production would spend 20-30 minutes talking with the guests and Howie. It was a great time working with him and having the luck to work on his show. Love Howie’s call on this right now I think he and Mr. Baseball Bob Eucker are the two best radio play by play announcers. So glad to see Howie call one of the best Met moments ever and Let’s Go Mets!
I watched the radio call Pete Alonzo’s Home Run call by Howie Rose, it is almost similar to the Matteau epic radio of the ‘94 Eastern Conference Final. Great job by Howie Rose.
pitches were tipped, Polar Bear was hipped before at bat Williams holds his glove closed tightly in front of his face before a fastball, looser and wider for the changeup
Watching this at 3-1 count we literally said, he’s got that wicked changeup and isn’t locating his fastball at all. He needs a strike so here comes an 87mph meatball down the middle!!!
I watched this on tv and there’s 2 things I wish were different: 1 - I wish this game was at Citi Field bc it would’ve been a walk off and the crowds reaction would’ve been nuts 2: God do I wish the SNY commentating crew can call the game. Can you imagine Gary Cohen making this call?
I saw Howie Rose being interviewed by Michael Kay earlier in the day, and he mentioned he wasn't getting any younger (I think he's 71) and that he'd like to see a Mets championship as an announcer because he wasn't planning on being one of those types, like Vin Scully or John Sterling, who is broadcasting well into their 80s. As the ball sailed over the wall, I knew Rose was out there happily making the call. Maybe if the Mets win it all, he'll decide to call it a career.
The Mets are in the position the Philadelphia had been in for the last two years. Now it's the Phillies who are the team getting rest/cooling off for several days. It's going to be interesting to see if hot team trumps great season record again this year.
