I applaud the heck out of the writers of this movie for not putting some cheesy song in this scene. Hearing him grunt, strain, and breathe heavy made this seem so much more real. Thank you.
Ocasio Already Posted On Twitter How There Wasnt Enough LGBTQ Representation In This Movie SO When They Redo It They Will Have To Ask Everybody Their PRonouns First And Emphasize That Work Is No Longer Needed And That Billionaires Will Just Be Taxed More To Pay For A Universal Basic Income
@@pb4ugo2bed84 wait, what? They're being forced to remake this movie because there wasn't any representation of the LGBTQ community in it? Really? Are you serious? Are they really that upset about it?? This is a movie about the return of a military hero. There really isn't a place for the LGBTQ community in the movie anyway. Its just a bunch of rookies, one of which is female, who are training to perform a near impossible mission. I don't have anything against the LGBTQ community, I really don't l. In fact I have a lot of respect for them. But seriously, can we just make a movie without people getting offended when genders aren't represented? Its getting to the point of being ridiculous. People are getting really anal about this, and it seriously has to stop. It is a MOVIE. Entertainment. Not politics.
So few people stating the best part of this: he did the jobs of two jets at once. One aims the laser, and the other drops the bombs. He did both and even kept aiming while almost fainting from 10Gs. Best scene of the entire movie.
I like how Mav did this not because he wanted to show he was the best or that he was right. He did it because he wanted all of these young pilots to make it home.
In combat, you have no idea if you will ever see home again. But, while training for combat, you might not ever know if you trained as hard as you ever could.
I love how you can see Hangman's attitude change as Mav makes his way through this. First he scoffs, then he smiles as if he thinks Mav will fail and wants some entertainment, then as Maverick drops his bombs he's intensely focused on whats happening, before finally saying 'Damn' in respect of what he's just seen. Glen Powell did such a great job, Hangman could so easily have come across as any other arrogant jock.
@@drovid008 I also loved how despite tensions between him and Rooster, he is still desperate to fly cover and help them after Maverick gets shot down, and the genuine concern he shows when Rooster gets downed saving Mav

I loaned my copy of the movie to my co-worker who is a big movie buff. His wife, not so much. It was both of their first times watching Top Gun: Maverick. When he returned the movie to me, he said, “I owe you a huge thank you for this!” He then described how him AND his wife were on the edge of their seats during all of the really intense moments of the film. I absolutely love how this movie can captivate anyone!
I love how Rooster finally begins to realize that his Dad flew with a freaking terror of the skies, and was probably safer up there than driving in his own car, had it not been for a stupid malfunction. I think he begins to understand, Maverick being this incredible feels just as robbed if not more for the death of Goose.
Warlock's wry smile was the perfect way to start that scene. Out of everyone in the room, he was the only one who knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Maverick was perfectly capable of doing exactly what he said he would. His expression was an amusing way to say, "These kids are about to get schooled" without having to say a single word. Throughout the whole movie Warlock was the strongest link between Maverick's world and the big Navy, the one man who could see both sides. His character was perfectly cast and perfectly acted, a delight to watch in every scene.
I honestly thought that Luke Skywalker was going to turn up on the salt planet in Last Jedi and do some shit like this in his X-wing. Instead, he farted out a ghost double and died.

My man removed 15 seconds off the training target..flies lower than 100ft training target.. drops bomb and does his own laser thing as opposed to 2 planes combination as in training target. Guy just showed he was giving it easy to the trainees and there's whole another level of badass yet to unlock
@@shane87smith oh yes but the original target time for the training of the young guns was 15 sec less than what his mission elapse time was set..iirc As in he set 2:15:00 while his given target to hangman and team was 2:30:00
What I love about this scene is Hangman's reaction. Even he, the most arrogant douchebag of the group is humbled by the level of Maverick's skill. Glen Powell did an amazing job in this movie.
He did indeed. More to the point - Hangman is willing to BE humble. To acknowledge greater skill than his own. He got put in his place - but he's not angry about it at all. Just... "Damn."
Hangman was certainly written deeper than just another "prideful guy to beat" stereotype. From what I saw, he's the type of guy who really only respects those who are inarguably better than him, the fact that Maverick is the only one who is definitely fuels his arrogance.
Also a great job by Jon Hamm here. In Cyclone's expression at 1:00 and 1:21, he might be feeling angry, frustrated, confused, and you can see all those things, but he also looks hopeful. Up to now the mission has seemed impossible, and Maverick may be defying his orders but he's also about to show whether the mission is even possible, and he has no choice but to root for him. Then at 3:30, his 'damn...' expression. Again he's frustrated, also impressed, annoyed at Maverick's cockiness, deflated and resound to the idea that the mission can only go forward with Maverick as the leader pre-empting the following scene. He does a great job at making the most from the little that he's given here, and generally bringing nuance and a human side to a character that on paper could have been a bit one-dimensional.
One of the great things about this scene to the students is that none of them pushed themselves this hard during their runs, the man showed them there was another level they needed to reach.
@@HooKsONyou Well, the other pilots got to do the pushups. Now they just need sit-ups, plenty of juice, and have a pure heart. (Dragonball Z Abridged Reference)
Whoever the F-18 pilot was when they filmed this has balls of aerospace grade titanium. Flying through a narrow canyon at that speed, while ensuring the safety of one of the biggest celebrities on the planet. No pressure.
No, the Department of Defense prohibit civilians from operating US military equipments. Tom's flying in the WSO seat while a real Navy pilot flies it in front.
@@alienvseditor Even so - Tom still had to endure the same g-forces as the pilot AND operate his controls to maintain the illusion that he’s flying the plane and doing the maneuvers himself AND operate his OWN internal cockpit cameras (one pointing at his face, the other at a “shoulder mount” position pointed forward to show the pilot and the outside terrain - both he and the pilot had the Maverick styled helmets) So no - Tom Cruise didn’t fly the plane, but he had MORE than enough to do back there! Give it up for a man THAT passionate about the craft of filmmaking and dedicated to giving all of us his absolute best as both director and actor! He might be crazy. But he’s crazy GOOD! 👍😎
Being a veteran, this man showed his peers one thing. You lead by example, you show him/ her how it's done. Failing is fine, giving up is never an option.
Cyclone has watched him humble the best pilots in the world, so he's considering it a very real possibility Maverick might do it. Warlock absolutely expects it.
My favorite part is Hangman's body language. At 1:22 you can see him settle into his chair like he's expecting Maverick to fail, just like they all did, like HE did. There is a cockiness to it that fits his character so well. After all, he's the best pilot, even if the rest are willing to admit it. By 3:06 his whole posture has changed; he's on the edge of his seat watching someone do what they all thought was impossible, and in less time. And by the end, there's just that quiet "damn" as he comes to grip with the realization that he ISN'T the best pilot. This dude's whole world changed in 2m and 15 sec.
And Hangman is man enough to accept it and roll with it. The dude might be an arrogant ass at times. But this, and his later honest and real concern for Maverick and Rooster - almost desperate to be allowed to go to their aid, shows his true character. He’s a jerk. But he’s a jerk with a heart of gold. He reminds me a lot of Major Charles Winchester from the TV show MASH. If you’ve seen any of that classic show, you might agree that the parallel is there.
@@musashimiyamoto586 if anyone has their “knickers in a twist” it’s you since you decided to respond in such a manner to someone’s appreciation of media. I’m pretty sure that fits the definition of “to become upset about something that is not very important.”

One of the best sequels of all time. This is how you do a classic justice. This scene along with the whole movie was what we go to the movies for. Absolutely fantastic!
Hangman is a key symbol. He represented the old Maverick in top gun 1. And the fact that Mav chose Rooster over Hangman as his wingman says that Mav sincerely believes the late Goose was a better, more reliable man than his younger self.
@@adriantrusca1245 You're wrong. Hangman is the new maverick. Abandons his wingman just like young Mav did in the original Top Gun. Iceman plays it by the book so he wouldn't abandon his wingman.
No Hangman is definitely Maverick. The wreckless and cocky attitude is something Iceman never had, and instead pointed that out to Maverick in the first movie. “I don’t like you because you’re unsafe”. It has the same vibe as Rooster saying “The only place you’ll lead anyone is an early grave” to Hangman
Putting the actual actors into actual planes and filming their reactions to the G-forces makes these flying sequences so realistic, this movie deserves some kind of Oscar. Best picture, best director, something. It deserves an award, for sure. It's a great movie. I didn't even like the first one much, but this one is absolutely stellar.
It should absolutely clean house on the technical awards (sound design, visual effects, editing), but that's about it. Don't get me wrong: I was thrilled that this movie was FAR beyond better than I expected. That said, it's an action movie, it's unapologetically pro-American, and it's unapologetically pro-US military. That's three strikes against the Academy ever allowing it into any other category, and they'd hate it just for being any one of those things.
The Oscars is now a left wing nutjob. Not even resembling what it was before in the times of Jurassic Park, Titanic, or LOTR. This film is pro US, and considered right-wing by many (even though it’s apolitical in nature, many leftists consider neutrality as being right-wing), so i doubt it would be winning anything from best picture, director, or actor. If i am to be proven wrong, i’d be happy to. From an artistic point of view, both acting and musically, everything was rather perfect with The Greatest Showman wasn’t it, but the oscars sidelined that one too. Oscars are becoming the Grammy’s now, trash and worthless.
A small bonus detail: Although we only see the timer in a few concrete moments, the scene is in timed to perfection, actual two minutes and fifteen seconds pass from the moment Maverick enters the gorge to the moment he hits 10g (and the target). There are no cuts or mini skips in seconds.
I love Hangman expressions. Firstly - he’s arrogantly thinking - “Mav can’t do this”. Secondly - he’s humbling thinking - “oh my gosh, Mav is going to do this”. Lastly - he’s stunned thinking - “how the hell did Mav just do that with time to spare…DAMN”. Love it.
@@DrClawizdead Hangman is more like Iceman. If you remember in Top Gun when Maverick first came across Iceman from a distance in the bar, Goose told Maverick; “Mav, wanna know who the best is? That’s Ihim. Iceman… It’s the way he flies, ice cold, no mistakes. Just wears you down until you get bored and frustrated, do something stupid and he’s got you”.
That's the difference. A professional will tell you why it can't be done. The best in their profession won't tell you why until they've done it already.
Rooster and Hangman each embodied aspects of Iceman and Maverick. Maverick was trying to live up to the legacy/notoriety of his dead father, couldn't get into Annapolis because of BS. Like Rooster. At the beginning of the original movie, Maverick was also kind of a loner who only cared about himself and Goose. A cocky glory hound like Hangman. Iceman followed procedure, aimed for perfection, like Hangman. But also he was a team player who wouldn't abandon his wingman, like Rooster. In fact, go back to Viper and Jester. Very different guys but the pairing was a lot like the other pairs.
Had to show respect to Maverick at this point. The fossil just proved to every Top Gun aviator here that it can be done. They just have to rely on themselves to do it.
Hangman while arrogant and a bit of a prick, he isn't too proud to acknowledge that there are greater pilots than him, and in the end when he wasn't chosen as one of the mission pilot, he accepts it humbly and relegates as a spare in a professional manner. Great writing and characterization.
@@alienvseditor I think Hangman is presented a little bit like young maverick. Even in dogfight practice with pheonix ha abanding her ,what mav instantly commented
@@alienvseditor yes while Hangman would have gotten to the kill zone on time he may not have been as useful in helping the others identify their bogeys. He’s not used to teamwork and that is why he wasn’t chosen. It was a bit of humbling for him and I’m sure the lesson was learned!
Hangman had already acknowledged Maverick after he got his ass beat during the practice dogfights. You realize this when he tells Rooster you need to fly like Mav to survive the mission. But his respect for Mav definitely solidified here.
I love John Hamm's reaction too. Without saying words he said what needed to be said. You can tell he was impressed, and at the same time like WTF man. All of the expressions on tje characters were perfect.
He said so much with just his face. Having that stony, intense look of not sure if Maverick could do it and what does it mean if he does. Then at 3:18, that slight change of expression says he knows the bomb is going to be on time, on target, and knows what he has to do next.
I like how, beyond asking who's piloting, and even if he is seething with anger at his insubordination, he doesn't go out to try and ground Maverick, but is actually just as curious to see whether Maverick can actually pull it off. He doesn't put the mission above his rank and welcomes any chance to show it can be done.
The inverted maneuver is strategically accurate as well. I can't remember if the movie explains this, but they invert in a steep dive to avoid high negative G's. Inverting changes the negative G to a positive G which the pilot can handle. Here's a cool interview with a Top Gun instructor. He discusses this maneuver starting at the 19-minute mark. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pn3tmr_cbSw.html
Damn I've only watch one movie in 4DX in Chile.. Fast and the Furious 8 I think. The movie was awful, they killed the spirit of the saga. But I've never laugh that much in cinema.. the movement of the seats, the smoke, the wind in my face for the bullets, the water and the hits behind.. haha what an amazing experience.. I just don't know if the hits in my back where from someone trying to shut me up or the cinema effect lol
The pilots' reactions sells this beautiful scene, as you come to appreciate how difficult it must have been when you see their reaction to it. Every single reaction perfectly fits its character. Combined with the escalating score. Yep that was one hell of a scene.
The initial training was for a time of 2:30. When Maverick went into the range, he shaved off 15 seconds. The training was for a flight of 100ft maximum. One glance at the altimeter showed he was at 39ft. The F-18's air frame recommended maximum was 7.5Gs. Maverick took it to 10Gs on that run. Maverick: The G.O.A.T. *
Also, the whole reason for them taking two planes per run is so that the rear plane can do the laser designation after the first plane drops the bombs and starts the high G pull out. But Mav does his own lasing, in reverse because its on the back side of the plane, while doing the 10 G pull out. Just an awesome scene!
Well they challenged Maverick. He said "All you did was teach them the mission was impossible" so Mav said "Bet. Hold my beer" cause he had a point. Up until this point, it had been failure after failure. Mav needed to give them something to aim for. To show them their efforts were not being wasted but that their goal was realistic.
There are many types of leaders but a more accurate thing to say is Maverick is a leader by example. Some leaders are great orators and Some leaders are great planners. Maverick leads from the front.
Well actually the truly great leaders never ask the people they lead to do something they are not capable of doing themselves, or at least understand, and then tell them how to do it.... This is a great example of the difference between leaders and managers

How many iconic characters has Tom Cruise portrayed through the years? Who can forget Lt. Kaffee in "A Few Good Men"? Who can forget Mitch McDeere in "The Firm"? Who can forget Nathan Algren from "The Last Samurai"? I could go on, but you get my point. Tom Cruise IS a cinematic legend! No one will ever fill his shoes; we'll never see his kind again... :(

Warlock knew... through out the whole movie he knew maverick is the best and could pull it off, even if he acted like he had doubt. I love this movie, absolutely brilliant 👍🏻
She liked the idgaf attitude in this situation of going anyway regardless of plan. They all knew by now he'd been canned as mission instructor so it's nothing to lose. If he fails he's what? Discharged and maybe charged with damaging naval equipment unauthorised, court martialed etc but he's practically toast anyway or he succeeds and proves Adm wrong and saves his students lives. So I think that's in there as well. She knows as much as they all know based on parameters they either do it Mavs way and have better chance of making it home or they do it Adm Simpsons way and have to take their chances against next gen fighters and probably all die with missiles as well. As it was they barely made it out and both Mav and Rooster got downed. Imagine the shit kicking theyd have got Simpsons ways. So yeah altogether I'd say I'm going anyway was nice from Mav.
@@PV1230 Chances are all of the pilots are breathing heavily as well. They have all tried the course, and they all likely know the breathing pattern needed so they can get oxygen without passing out from the G-Forces. Maverick did not memorize the course that they did, Maverick is going faster, harder, and better than any of them did. I remember seeing this in theaters, it was amazing and it would be wrong to not acknowledge Hans Zimmer’s par in making this scene especially amazing. He does such a great job of creating tension and depth and when he drops the bombs it creates a powerful resolution that just exudes so much emotion- I can’t explain it! I love this scene especially because of his work🥰
I was so satisfied when this scene happened . It is the first time we really got to see and experience Maverick being such a superior pilot. We mostly took characters word for it in the first film. Saw glimpses of it in the training scene of this movie. But this was the first time the viewer was able to see Mavericks skill in full display.
To be fair the first movie erased any doubt of his lack of skill in the air. What was new here for Maverick was showing his limits in a teachable way. The pilots knew by the number how they stacked up- they were able to see they were outclassed and measure it as well.
There was a subtle, yet important, change to Maverick in TG2: his focus on others. Yes, he still does things his way; yes, he still disrespects authority; but he's not just in it for himself as he was in much of TG1. He was worried about others. We saw this in the DarkStar scene, where Hondo reminds him of what'll happen if he goes through with the test flight; Maverick replies that he knows what'll happen to everyone else (i.e. the support personnel in the program) if he doesn't. This scene is just a continuation of that; he's showing that the daring mission can be flown, and that the students' lives will be in much less danger. What I like about Mav in this film is that he does what he does for others, and I LOVE that!
This is my favorite scene in the entire movie. Nothing like going against all the odds with nothing but your wit and grit, evincing the finest ethos of naval aviation.
This is one of my favorite scenes because Maverick actually had great love for his team. This is the behavior warriors and leaders should have toward those under their command. Very good job.
The best past for me is the realisation from his trainees that they have all tried and failed to do this mission in 2 30 and mav has flew it in 15 seconds less all while lasing the target and dropping his own bombs unaided. It would have been topped off only by Jon hamm pumping his fist at this achievement from maverick 😁
@@bryankriser8656 on the contrary, I think he was impressed. He knew that 2 30 was already a difficult target and mav smashed that time flying the mission solo. He just couldn't let the other pilots see his reaction
@@badassbiker78 disagree Mr hamm was willing to sacrifice hit pilots lives with a ridiculous run time of 4:00. Maverick force his hand by proving him wrong by doing even faster the 2:30. Was he impressed with the run probably but he hated his antics and he represented the uniform
Love this scene and is one of the best examples of leadership. Show it. Demonstrate it. Prove it. Inspire it. This is leadership by example and can be applied in not just in the military but in the civilian world as well. One special note to add: Kudos to the aircraft maintenance folks. It's one of the absolute toughest jobs in the military outside of the battlefield. They keep the planes flying to perfection. Without their critical maintenance, constant checks, and preparation, pilots are just civilians with sunglasses.
This actually helped me change students lives when I define what a leader is Thank you Tom cruise. You saved a lot of kids in Towson Md from joining a gang
I'll never forget watching this scene in imax theatre, you literally could feel everyone in the their seats holding their breath and leaning forward , it was a such an awesome movie moment being back in theatres after covid
watching this movie felt all the tension; You never got tired of seeing it and that's why you wanted to see it more than once. I've seen it 4 times and those 4 times were amazing. Tom Cruise had every reason to delay the release to enjoy this movie in a movie theater.
I love the look on the student-pilot’s faces as this scene plays out. When Maverick says “Time on target 2:15 minutes” the look on their face’s is utter disbelief, even mocking-humor. When he accomplishes it in LESS than 2:15 it is looks of astonishment, awe, of being thunderstruck, hope and on Rooster’s face, respect.
It's a small detail but one of my favorite parts about this scene is the few times you can see Mavericks face sag because of the G-force. Knowing all of these scene are filmed in real F18's makes this detail so much cooler because Tom's actually pulling real g-force. This is probobly the most intense flying up to this point in the movie and the proof is literally on screen in front of you.
Yep - that's real G-Forces. Something the original Top Gun wasn't capable of portraying. The technical details on how they filmed inside the cockpits are fascinating viewing if you can find them on RU-vid. In summary - the cameras - specifically the LENSES of the cameras (because the actual BODY of the camera with the FILM is actually somewhere else in the plane's modified structure) got small enough and durable enough to be placed inside the cockpit in the correct fashion to capture the actor. And - SIMULTANEOUSLY - Capture an "over the shoulder" view of the ACTUAL pilot flying the plane in the FRONT seat! Any time the camera switches from showing Tom Cruises helmeted face and the scenery receding behind him - to showing that over-the-shoulder shot of "his" helmet from the rear and the oncoming view - what you are seeing is the actual Navy Pilot with a duplicate "Maverick" helmet. Both cameras were recording at the same time. The choice of edit timing was done later in post production. But it's all 100% real footage! Absolute MAD RESPECT for Cruise to do it this way!
Just so you know that Tom Cruise was not flying that F18..he was in back seat portraying as if he was flyin...yes he was actually in g-force in the back seat..again not flyin
This scene made the movie for me. While he's doing it, I couldn't help but think that if it was a video game I'd have crashed and burned dozens of times over, but he only has one shot. The reason he wasn't promoted is exactly the same reason that John Hamm's character was, Maverick was never into playing it safe. He knew that the only way to get out alive at all was his way. Doing it Admiral Simpson's way would have gotten them all killed. One other point for me is that watching this movie brought back memories of simpler times when a movie was a movie, good or bad, and it wasn't made to get someone's message across to you.
This movie, and its predecessor, *most definitely* is trying to get someone's message across to you. The original was the greatest recruitment video the military has ever had, which is why they allowed the use of all those shiny planes to begin with.
Wow...I have seen this movie 4 times in the theatre across three states(I travel alot) huge fan of the franchise. I been watching clips on YT just to relive those special scenes as this. I've read alot of comments but yours really said something. This movie was NOT to push an agenda or convey someone's message it was just a great a$$ sequel to an amazing movie with charismatic and powerful actor/actresses and superb cinematography. It's about as perfect as you can get to a movie masterpiece.
@@hosephotographer9630 America great, enemy bad. American military greatest. Enemy military poor. America does good. Enemy does bad. Both the Top Gun movies are packed with messaging. You just don't see it because you've already swallowed the hook.
I agree and on your last point. Notice how all the pilots are a diverse bunch. But that fact is never brought up. Hangman was a dick a few times to Phoenix but she handled him well. The message is still there. It was just much more subtle. Penny is a strong and independent woman. The movie shows you that fact. She’s a mom running a business while also sailing every now and then. It’s kinda nice to see. But she’s not a man hater either. Maverick is her man and she supports him. Great writing all around.
Tom Cruise put his body, his life on the line to entertain you people lol. Flying at that low altitude at such high speeds, if the actual real pilot made a slightest mistake, he and Tom Cruise would splatter all over the mountain terrain. A moment of appreciation for Tom Cruise, taking entertaining the masses to another level.
On this topic (not for this movie) Dani Trejo has a different opinion "I know that all the big stars hate me to say this, but I don’t want to risk 80 peoples’ jobs just to say I got big huevos on ‘The Tonight Show,"......“We have stunt people who do that stuff,” Trejo said. “And if they get hurt, I’m sorry to say but they just need to put a mustache on another Mexican and we can keep going. But if I get hurt, everybody’s out of a job. So I don’t choose to do that.”
I maintain that one of the greatest decisions they made for this film was putting the actors through legitimate fighter jet training to improve the realism. Even the subtle things like G breathing really drive home the care and effort they put into making sure 'Maverick' would be as accurate a depiction of the events in the film as could possibly be done.
Cyclone's reactions were good as well: 0:06 - confidence that he is not going to send them off to die from slamming into a mountain 0:15 - his reasoning is actually sound 0:35 - confusion, as according to his knowledge nobody should even be on the range 1:00 - subtle anger at being disobeyed 1:20 - add a bit of concern that the entire room is about to see Maverick slam into a rock wall 3:18 - holy cow, Maverick is about to succeed on his first try in less time than originally planned 3:29 - well glad he only told Maverick he was grounded rather than putting it into writing. Now he has to take back everything he just said.
I actually don't think he was angry at 1:00, he was refuting that pilot's statement, mentioning no one can beat the time, thinking Maverick could beat that time. He was just patient and eager at the same time to witness. While he has low opinion of Maverick, he acknowledges his flight capabilities.
I hear so many say that Cyclone was made to be an a-hole who didn't care about the safety of the recruits. But in hindsight, he was really doing what he thought was for the good of the military by following the guidelines. Dude's just your typical boss who just wants to run things on a tight shift and is clearly shown to be stress out by the responsibility put on him.
@@osmanyousif7849he’s Iceman (or rather, who iceman would be if Kilmer hadn’t had throat cancer) He’s by the book, everything is according to what he was taught, diametrically opposed to maverick’s style of, well, being a maverick that sees rules as obstacles.
