I got one not long ago from a nursery. I examined their plants carefully and picked the fullest one they had. It had a milky film on the leaves that was an "uh oh" moment, but the price was so good, I decided to buy anyway. Well, I was right: the milky substance was a spray that had been used before shipment to try to hide the fact that it had mealies. It has been months of treatments and I finally went for the systemic (toxic) treatment because nothing was working. I am hopeful this will wipe them out once and for all. I went back to the nursery and they had not sold because others noticed the problem so they were pulled and placed in a quarantine area for treatment. All eight were dead! I had asked about them because I was curious. Sadly, the nursery staff didn't know what they were doing and had over-watered them by using the systemic too often. They do not survive chronically wet soil. Whole situation was pretty sad but they were sent that way, so not their fault. When they get mealies it can be a nightmare, but not un-fixable. I am not sorry I bought mine, but I am being patient in treating it. Fingers crossed that the systemic will work. .

My hoya compacta doesnt seem to like it when hung it in my east facing window; so i just have to keep them with my orchids (all away from windows. You're right about the vines though, I took cuttings of similar sizes, not only did they root at different speeds, but one has grown freakishly longer than the other 3, I think it's just the quirk of having multiple vines in one pot. One thing I've noticed is, variegated plants seem to struggle a lot more, as gorgeous as they are! But I certainly have more love for the solid green ones, as they don't freak out so easily.

I bought a large varigated hindu rope a few months ago, and have been on a real journey with it. When I bought it, it was freshly watered (still dripping), so I put it in isolation and determined not to water it for a good while. Unfortunately, I left it in someone else's care for a couple of weeks while I was away, and they thought it was a different plant and continued watering it. Not blaming them or anything, they are not plant people and I could have provided a better photo guide. I certainly appreciated their efforts to keep everything going. It was a little distressing, though. Had a lot of yellowing, liquefied leaves. Shortly after, I discovered mealybugs on it. Since the nursery's potting mix was retaining too much water, I ended up completely unpotting it, giving everything a neem-medicated soak (which was very effective), and salvaging what I could. It's about half the size, now, and I have a few propagations going as well.

Can you explain the "neem medicated soak", please? I have a string of this hoya I purchased last February. It is growing but painfully, :). I do not see any mealybugs but I am interested in your method just in case. Thanks.
@sylviaa8425
@sylviaa8425 4 года назад
@@misseskval2686 Hey, sorry I didn't see this earlier! I don't remember the exact proportions I used, but it was something like 2-3 tsp neem oil , 3 L water and 1 tsp unscented palmolive dish soap. I didn't really measure carefully - I was kind of out of ideas and thought the plant was a lost cause. I had unpotted the plant, so I just dunked everything into the bucket and left it submerged for maybe an hour, then repotted it in new soil with a lot of orchid bark. Right now I have a few healthy propagations, two healthy original strands, and two longer strands that aren't doing as well. I wouldn't necessarily recommend my method, especially not as a first response. I think I probably traumatized the plant/strands with the uprooting, but at least I haven't seen mealybugs since.

I bought two cuttings during the summer off of Etsy. One cutting I don't think is going to make it. It is slowly turning brown from the end. The other cutting hasn't grown a single bit in about five months. I've moved it from window to window but it seems to just be sitting there, although at least it isn't dead yet! I really like the variegated one better, but I don't think I'll purchase a second one because it's the only plant I own that doesn't seem to make any progress at all, except for the ones that died. At least with death you see some sort of change; with that Hindu rope there's no change at all. It could be fake!

I don't have a hindu rope but I find them very unique and beautiful, however the main reason for not getting one is because of all of the hiding places for pests 🙄 We'll see if I'll get one next year anyways! And also, I suck at fertilizing.. I'm a really really bad plant parent in that department 🙈
@julienicole92
@julienicole92 4 года назад
Hey Linda! If you have Espoma Organic fertilizers in Sweden (that's where you live right?) I would give it a try! If not, I'm sure there are other great fertilizers to try. I just fertilize all of my plants once a month. It's more safe to under-fertilize rather than other-fertilizing, which could harm the plant.
@lindasaav7364
@lindasaav7364 4 года назад
@@julienicole92 Thank you! I don't think we have Espoma here in Sweden but we have a lot of other brands. It's better to under-fertilize than not to fertilize at all which I'm guilty of. But I promise I'll do better next year when spring arrives!!

The hindu rope is very EH to me but when I found a verigated one for $11 I bought it because I know it's a "cool, hip" plant so I jumped on the band wagon. Hahaha

@@alcurtis93 Thanks Alex! Yes they can be a mealy bug nightmare, but it's the risk I'm willing to take ! And I keep my large one far away from the other plants just in case
