This song is so deliciously dark and sinister and sweet. The intertwining of love and obsession is a terrible thing when it’s one-sided but one of the most powerful forces in the world when it’s mutual.
“Give your heart and soul to charity, cuz the rest of you - the best of you - honey, belongs to me” is one of the sweetest yet lustiest lines I’ve ever heard
hozier once said that he likes to think of loving as a destructive act- not towards the one you love, but towards the rest of the world. telling someone that you love them and by extension, saying that you hate everything else. he also referenced this in 'jackie and wilson' : "happy to lie back, watch it burn and rust we tried the world good god, it wasn't for us." i didn't know i would ever find cataclysm romantic or not out of the ordinary but here we are -
I love how the song isn't about being protective. it's about being in love with an apocalyptic force as a person, that not even god could stop, and that person *loving you back.* it's a beautiful story honestly
This comment in this context reminds me of von Trier's Melancholy. In it the depressed sister is in love with the planet that is bringing on the apocalypse. Her passively self-destructive actions make perfect sense in the apocalyptic world where happy and sane people crumble.
I don't know if anyone's done this yet but here are the lyrics :) [Verse 1] When I first saw you The end was soon To Bethlehem It slouched and then Must've got a good look at you Give your heart and soul to charity 'Cause the rest of you, the best of you Honey, belongs to me [Verse 2] Ain't it a gentle sound, the rollin' in the graves? Ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes? Ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you live? [Pre-Chorus] Ain't you my baby? Ain't you my baby? [Chorus] Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing [Verse 3] If I was born as a black thorn tree I'd wanna be felled by you, held by you Fuel the pyre of your enemies Ain't it warming you, the world goin' up in flames? Ain't it the life of you your lighting of the blaze? Ain't it a waste it watch the throwing of the shade? [Pre-Chorus] Ain't you my baby? Ain't you my baby? [Chorus] Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing [Chorus] Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing [Chorus] Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing fucks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing
[Verse 1] When I first saw you The end was soon To Bethlehem it slouched And then, it must've caught a good look at you Give your heart and soul to charity 'Cus the rest of you The best of you Honey, belongs to me [Pre-Chorus] Ain't it a gentle sound, the rolling in the graves Ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes Ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you lay Ain't you my baby, ain't you my babe [Chorus] Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing [Verse 2] If I was born as a blackthorn tree I'd wanna be felled by you Held by you Fuel the pyre of your enemies [Pre-Chorus] Ain't it warming you, the world gone up in flames Ain't it the life you, your lighting of the blaze Ain't it a waste they'd watch the throwing of the shade Ain't you my baby, ain't you my babe [Chorus] Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing
I'm in love. I have to admit that I was kinda afraid that you would, like many other artists whose first albums were great, suddenly change your style of music and go after what the majority of people wants. I am so happy that you kept your unique style and I can't wait for the other songs. ❤ (best wishes from Germany thehe)
If I was born as a blackthorn tree I wanna be felled by you held by you Fuel the pyre of your enemies Mindblown. How do you even come up with such wonderful lines !?
so there's a video of him explaining the meaning of this song, and its not actually the singer being protective, its the one he loves that is so incredibly dangerous and terrifying that nothing can get even close to them. I'll put the link in this comment when I find it 😅 Edit: here it is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CDbma9rhCjc.html
My friend was telling me about that. He said, "It's a love song about the end of the world. It's where you're witnessing everything go up in flames, and as you look over to see your love's reaction, it dawns on you that they may be the one responsible for it."
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT! Its one of my favorites from his first album so once I heard that guitar I melted and instantly fell in love with this track!
Our forest deity Hozier has returned. Now I can gladly lay in the forest, surrounded and slowly consumed by the moss and roots of the Earth as I listen to this. Just listening to this in my home, moss and branches have begun growing anywhere I look from the power of Hozier.
This is my favourite of all four songs. it’s got such a spiritual over godly presence about it and just is like what i invision a god loving a human must feel like
Always love the ancient bog with his ethereal voice. He lures me to him with his sultry melody, pulling my eternal soul from my crumbling husk that is this human form.
Felt this once. Incredible lyrics, and it does what the purest art should - kindle that emotion in listener. First time I forgot the words and came up with this. Ain't it enthralling, the way our darkness intertwines? Ain't it like poison, as our wicked love designs? Ain't it seductive, as you shatter worlds and minds? Ain't you my baby, ain't you my baby?
You're standing by a small fire Infront of a grey-green van, stained and dented, with your s/o, as they look out to the sea through the mist that clouds the clifftop. You are both on the run starting this morning, and have been driving until late evening to get to a place to spend the night.
This song is like the quiet, focused, and protective rage you feel after finding out someone abused your loved one... anger manifesting itself in a warning to the world, put into a song
The picture that this song burned into my mind is so vivid that I wish I could have the talent of paiting to try and make it come to life... Two lovers on a bench, in a cliff. Below them, a city aching in flames. The sky is in tones of red and orange, like a vivid pyre. You can hear something godly roar down there as people scream and the ground rumbles so loudly it trembles like earthquakes, but they're so hipnotized by each other that they simply ignore what is coming.
It just boggles my mind how people can listen to Hozier's songs and press the dislike button. I get his songs not being everyone's cup of tea.Everyone has the right to dislike them. But...like....what is it that they dislike?! I'm genuinely curious. His voice?Lyrics?Music?Deeper messages? Like what...??!!
I was so afraid he wasn't going to make any more music! Thank you Hozier so much for giving us more of your heart and soul! Thank you for sharing your world with us again. I'm sure I'll fall in love with every new song!
