Just saw hozier in concert last night... he is the sweetest man. He thanked everyone who did the lighting and staging and sound and everything individually by name, as well as the people he was on tour with and the local artist he had open for him. then he thanked us for watching. It was so heartfelt and sweet. He is surprisingly soft-spoken when he's not rocking out; he's really the sweetest man.
I swear to anything; if Hozier did a cover of the freakin' alphabet or a nursery rhyme it'd be a spiritual experience that touches the atoms of your soul. 😅
it's totally fascinating how some people can turn people, who thought their whole lives they are super straight, way on the gay side. As if this social construct of being into the opposite sex didn't matter anymore because only this person matters, I think it's beautiful. Kinda wish I could ever experience it in real life
I'm glad he, Hozier, decided to share his gift of voice and music making with the world. I too am a lover of Van. I hope he feels honored that his craft has influenced the younger generation.
I firmly believe Hozier is a male syren and you can't change my mind. If I heard him sing in the middle of the sea you bet I'm going to jump in. At least I'll die happy :)
after his reading of Orpheus and Euridice, i watched it on Ted-Ed, an animated version. And they had some animated guy singing in the background. And I was like: wait...this voice should be Andrew's. Anything else just sounds wroooong
I'm old, The Beatles, CSN&Y, are my bands. I rarely am interested in a new voice, but Hozier is like silk to my soul. I did not know I needed him. I believe in the wonders of the earth when he sings. My brain opens doors long closed and I float out.
I never thought anyone could touch the original Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing.” But I have never heard anything as beautiful and soulful as this. I’m still floored. Slayed. Stunned. Dead on the ground. Let’s play it again!
@@retasueus Me too, Sue, and l'm 65 years old and have been listening to and gleaning solace from dear Van for over three decades, but this young man takes the cake on this one.
Lyrics: I will stroll the merry way and jump the hedges first I will drink clear clean water for to quench my thirst I'll go watch the ferry-boats and I'll get high On the bluer ocean against the waters sky I will walk and talk in gardens all wet with rain I will never ever ever grow so old again Oooh good God you're a sweet thing Oooh good God you're a sweet thing I shall drive my chariot down - your streets and cry Hey it's me tonight I'm dynamite and I don't know why You shall take me strongly in your arms again And I still wonder if I ever felt the pain We shall walk and talk in gardens all misty wet with rain And I shall never, ever, ever grow so cold again Oooh good God you're a sweet thing Oooh good God you're a sweet thing I shall raise my hand up into the night, to the night sky And count the stars that are shining in your eye Just to dig it all and not to wonder that would be fine You're satisfied not to read in between the lines Oooh good God you're a sweet thing Oooh good God you're a sweet thing Oooh my my my my my sweet thing Oooh good God
This seals the deal. Hozier is a treasure. He celebrate his 25th birthday on St. Paddys Day, March 17th, but he sounds like he's lived a thousand lifetimes. Long life, Hozier.
what? this is great, i agree on that. But the original song is miles above this. So, this song is not great because of Hozier. Get your shit together bro
I am a huge Van Morrison fan...I have listened to him since I was a kid (30+ years) because my parents were also big fans. This is by far my favorite Van Morrison song. Hozier does a good cover, and I think he's a good artist. But, I have to agree Dany Silva....no one - I mean no one - can do it like my main man VM.
The lyrics aren't the original here, for anyone who was wondering about the lyrics for his version: I will stroll the merry way And jump the hedges first I will drink clear, clean water For to quench my thirst I go watch the ferry-boats And I get high On the bluer ocean Against the water’s sky And I will walk and talk In gardens all wet with rain I will never, ever, ever, grow so old again Oh good god you’re a sweet thing Oh good god you’re a sweet thing I shall guide my chariot Down your streets and cry Hey, it's me tonight, I'm dynamite And I don't know why You shall take me strongly in your arms again I lie still wonder if I ever felt the pain We shall walk and talk In gardens all misty, wet with rain And I shall never, ever, ever grow so old again. Oh good god you’re a sweet thing Oh good god you’re a sweet thing I shall raise my hand up into the night, into the night sky And count the stars That are shining in your eye Just to dig it all and not to wonder That would be fine And satisfied not to read in between the lines Oh good god you’re a sweet thing Oh good god you’re a sweet thing Oh, my-my, my, my-my sweet thing Oh good god
@@Alia-du4vs he Hoziers own version of the song he always changes up the lyrics to make them feel how he interpretation of the same song. To make sure he's feeling that version for others to..
well said, his voice is one of a kind, and feels like a soul album from the 50s... and he's even better live, I can't comprehend what I'm listening too
I was having the same thoughts, April. The last time I was bitten THIS hard by the fangirl bug was in the 80's with Boy George, when I was a teenager and such things are expected of you. Ah well....*I've* come to terms with my obsession and am just going with it. Whatever gets us through the day, right? :-)
Lucia Rooney I'm right there with you, Lucia....I'm also more than old enough to be his mom and it hasn't slowed me down a bit. (And my husband fully supports my obsession, which the 1,253,756th reason I love him so) Which got me wondering what his fan base demographic is like? I've seen a great deal of comments on RU-vid from we, ehm, more *seasoned* ladies as well as a great deal of younger gals, which is mildly surprising to me...didn't think a younger crowd would appreciate all the blues influences and amazing turns of phrase in his lyrics, for instance. What was the crowd like at the concert you went to?
Love your version . It is our 30th Anniversary today. I will play it for my wife. She is the one I choose for the rest of my life. And I will walk and talk in gardens, all wet with rain And I will never, ever, ever, ever grow so old again Release this song. VAN MORRISON IS A LEGEND. THIS IS A FINE TRIBUTE TO SUCH A GEM. CATCH YOU IN NYC.
I am a HUGE Van Morrison fan and have never liked a cover until this one. I have never heard anyone due him justice til this gorgeous and talented man...well done
Hello all, it's been 10 years since I've commented on anything. This morning while my boys were playing PS3 before school I watched VH1 and Take Me to Church came on. I was floored. Something about the feeling, I guess my some call it soul music is cause it hammered mine. And then I found this. Tears came to my eyes. If he ever covered Stoned Me by Van Morrison, I would probably cancel the day.
there is a certain magic in this performance... I can’t even begin to describe it (and I bet Andrew himself wouldn’t be able to either). He has an immense gift in that he can put such emotion into every phrase/intonation... he is such a talent. we’re lucky to have him
Ever song he sings he does justice his range is crazy it's seriously out of this world his voice is so soulful and rich and glorious this man is majestic he oozes pure talent and I can't say it enough 99% of the time I literally cry listening to him because his voice is so beautiful you can feel him in your soul when he sings and gah he's so beautiful it's so rare now in days to find pure raw talent like this he's so original and he just does his own thing and it works it truly works for him more people like Hozier should be recognized instead of the artist that only sing meaningless songs about ass drugs sex and money
Sherrieluvs1d absolutely agree. There's a pure, raw nature about him and his music. It's just very soulful. Plus: His music seems to be different from everything I know and still it feels likes it's always been part of my life.
It's been 9 months since I posted this comment I still feel the same I've Also been to three concert my first July 28th Hozier was my first concert and I am so happy he was because it was such a magical day and I loved it he sounds even better live people I tell you I in editors broke down when I pulled up because he started singing and he was just absolutely amazing I can't ding worlds that's give his voice justice
When you listen to his songs you can tell that singing comes insanely natural to him. He does it so smoothly, it sounds like a lot of effort but when you watch him it's like nothing. Truly one of the best musicians I have heard in a very long time.
His voice has an old soul. Makes me really smile. I love watching his fingers as he plucks his guitar. Beautiful hands besides his voice, the face isn't bad either
I was expecting him to fall flat un his face, I mean .....it's Van the Man we're talking about! This man's cover was sooo good, so heartfelt and gentle. Thank you xery much.
Wow... easily my fav Van Morrison song (besides Into the Mystic), and I previously thought it uncoverable... Hozier brings the chills just as good as Van, and adds his own flavor. SO impressed! Hozier is an amazing new Irish talent straight from Van's pedigree, with all the poetry, melancholy, and soul that comes with it. Hope he puts out music for many years to come, I will be listening!
Man, I came into this with a closed mind thinking it'd be an abomination to one of the most important and favorite songs of my lifetime. But seriously, this is incredible and a true nod to the great Van Morrison. One of the best covers of any song by any person I've ever heard. Simply well done.
My dad, God bless him, turned me on to Van when I was about 13 and I fell so in love. I generally think covers of his sings are a terrible idea, but this literally brought tears to me eyes about halfway through, pure joy. Andrew is a gift. :)
Being a huge fan of Van Morrison’s music I have seen this video when searching for Van Morrison’s live versions of Sweet Thing and always scrolled past this thinking no one could ever come close. God was I wrong!
Firstly nothing can surprise me easily, secondly I do NOT waste praise, but this guy made me feel alive just with one song! My pulse has accelerates as a rocket when I hear his voice!
E Kennedy the waterboys are obviously talented, but they changed the entire essence of the song! theirs was a totally new take, whereas hozier and jeff buckley's versions were definite tributes to van morrison
I cannot say enough good things about this guy!! His voice is unique and soo special, his covers are better than the originals, but his own music will become iconic I am sure. He is FANTASTIC in concert (saw him recently in NYC) and going to see him again in Nashville next year! He is THAT GOOD!! Also wanna say I had the pleasure of meeting him and he couldn't have been friendlier or nicer!! MUCH LOVE FOR THE TRULY TALENTED HOZIER!!!
Such a hard song to cover, it's done so well by Van Morrison. The original is so good. Balls on him to even try. That said, well done. I love it. Every good cover should bring something new to the song, some new take that continues the life of the song without taking away from it. This was achieved. Not only was it respectful to the original, it also added to the limits of the song in a way that stayed true to the concept... That's such a fine line. Well done!
I’ve played my fingers bloody recreating this cover myself over and over again. I’ve never had a song mean more to me than this; family, friends, and lovers, all are moved when I play this version of this incredible song. I’m not a singer by any means but when I play this song I need to sing it and I belt it out. This is the only song I’ve ever sung while playing and it will probably remain that way.
Nothing in my life has ever attracted me more than when he sings you shall take me strongly in your arms again....I would bet everything I own I've watched this over a thousand times, it's becoming a problem!
same here. getting back to this one and trinity orchestra covering pink floyd all the time xD The pain when some of the good things aren't added on spotify
STUNNING. When somebody covers a song that was sung by an angel in the first place & the cover is as good as this, we know we've found a God! I can't get enough of This song.
This is one of my favorite performances from him and I can't believe how amazing he sounds live. He took this song and made it so much better than the original
Like someone said, normally Morrison covers is a treacherous, dishonest, brutal act. But Hozier is a very talented irish and undertands Astral Weeks because he said it's one of his favorite albums, he understands the mystic unique feeling of the irish spirit. Probably the best cover of Van's masterpiece.
@@hanami741 It's not Morrisons version, ITS HIS SONG. Hozier is a version. And nobody can imitate Van's feeling and voice, sorry if you don't get it. ;) And yep, Astral Weeks the album, needs time and a open mind and feelings to get, not for everyone. Can take months certainly.
