I love that Hozier is literally the sweetest, most gentle man you can find on this earth, but whenever he sings this song he is so full of passion and ANGER he legit becomes scary
I actually like this version more than the one on the radio. Don't get me wrong, I love the radio version, but this one has so much more emotion and intensity behind it.
+K Bourgeois So compare this version to the SNL version with Bill Hader introducing the group. I like the SNL version at least a little bit more than this version.
I may be one of his oldest fans as a 64 yr. old Grandmother, but I just love his voice and music. It's so soulful and from the heart. He's such a genuine person. I agree word for word what "piscesfem" had to say (about 3 or 4 down a month ago) and that's it. AMEN!!!
I agree with what "piscesfem" says too (I just found her comment). She's got it nearly all figured out, except about the lyric's "sick" reference. That part is not about original sin, it's about something else very sad that happened in the guy's childhood that he's trying to forget about - that is why the lyrics say "only then I am clean".. the lady helps him to forget the ugliness. And you're welcome. :)
I love this version so much, but I hate that they left out the second verse. That verse has more intensity than the first and to hear him sing it with the passion he has in this performance, it would have been orgasmic.
Hozier does two things when he performs this song live that I love so much: 1. On "shrine of your light" he sings it as straight 8th notes live whereas in the official recording "shrine of your" is a dotted eighth/swing rhythm. Straight 8ths to me makes it seem more powerful 2. Every time he says "offer me that deathless death" he does this kind of "ack" sound on "offer" and it just makes my brain go WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Flawless performance with HEART and SOUL. He did not "rush" the lyrics, in fact perhaps decreased tempo ever so slightly in order to emphasize the lyrics. I hardly ever say this: This live performance is better than the recording. Awesome and Thank You. :)
I love this guy...its all of him that's attracting...his voice, guitar, looks, words in his songs, its everything...that's the answer to someone earlier...He has something that you can feel.......sorry to be so nice!!!!.LOL
I don't understand with you people. If his music style is not based on your taste of music, why watch? Curious? Besides, i admire Hozier very much. His songs, his style of music and his voice fits perfectly on him. It doesn't mean that i am a fan of Hozier. I myself, don't even liked his covers like on Do I Wanna Know and Problem, but hey, it's his style and it's a COVER. Covers don't mean it has to be the same thing. Get your senses, human. If it's not what you'd like, leave it.
lyrics: My lover's got humor She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshiped her sooner If the Heavens ever did speak She's the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom" The only Heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well A-, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover's the sunlight To keep the Goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice Drain the whole sea Get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife Offer me my deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life
That is one sexy Irishman, The fact that he doesn't seem to know how friggin beautiful he is just makes him that much sexier. I wouldn't have expected the best R&B band to come out in decades to be from Ireland. This is a great song, but the whole album is excellent. Definitely not a one-hit-wonder.
I cry. This song is so beautiful and the lyrics are amazing and what's most important.. his voice! Independent, strong and charming.. forever my favorite
Andrew Hozier Byrne HOZIER band Singer songwriter Vocals cords are Powerfully Amazing and his voice never change is the same voice in studio and live performances and that's why He is the best. 🖤
@Uluk A. Abylbekov was unclear. It helps to add "jk" or to add in parenthesis it's sarcasm cuz reading words on the internet isn't the same as listening to sarcasm :)
