It's based on a true story of a guy in Russia who confessed his sins of homosexuality to his Catholic priest and the priest told local gangsters who hunted the boyfriend down and burned him alive. 😥

This was in response to the hypocritical stance on the LGBTQ+ community of the Catholic church and also because members of the LGBTQ+ community in Chechnya are still being rounded up and brutalized by the government - that was the protest/hate march seen in the video. The box that was buried and dug up was representative of how far too many have to keep their love and hopes a secret to avoid being brutalized and killed simply because of their sexuality. It's an incredibly powerful video and thank you for reacting to it.

I don't know if anybody said it yet but a basic interpretation according to interviews with him is that he's talking about the institutions like specifically the Roman Catholic Church where he grew up in Ireland and other institutions, like in Russia where this video is set, versus the power of love, so that "she" is more a metaphor. Basically the video posits the question for people who don't like seeing gay people being affectionate is which thing is actually uglier to you? Seeing a couple kiss when they're not bothering you... or seeing violence like this. And the fact that there are people who think that the violence is less ugly than the love is, well it speaks for itself. Great reaction you're a very kind person.

Also the boxes they bury are symbolic of The Secret they have to hide. And you don't see the singer In the song at all, he wanted it to be about what he's talking about.

One of the best gifts my born and raised Baptist husband could give to our daughter who has been questioning her sexuality… on Christmas, he told her that he’s been reading the Bible every morning, which he has. He said that NOT ONCE has he found anything against homosexuality. ❤

The church has betrayed his confession of homosexuality, told he was born Sick and refuses absolution. The "She" he speaks of represents sex. The box holds the secret of his homosexuality which he buries but it gets out anyway. He is persecuted and denied the basic need of every human being. Loving and being loved. I weep for them.

Yes, Hozier mentions a she in the lyrics, to broaden his audience I'm sure. However, he used a gay couple and far-right gangs in the video. Recorded in black and white for a more compelling and graphic impact, (NO color to misinterpret) it just doesn't get any more powerful than this. (Black and white are not colors, they're shades or neutrals ~ they have absolutely nothing in common, complete opposites of one another and both fight for dominance) The video portrays an era when anti-gay propaganda laws were relevant, evoking prejudice and hatred. When homosexuality was viewed similarly to the sexual sins of beastiality and pedophilia; not negating religious organizations that would undermine the human experience of sexuality. If you don't feel SOMETHING while watching this video, check for a pulse!

Hozier talks about she in a religious sense I think. Like personifica of religion and using she to explain that he can love a women just as a man can love a man ya know. “She” is religion itself.

Ppl are stupid ,mean and they think they have the right to tell others how to live and hwo to love😢😢😢 it s not faire, i don t believe one bit that God whant this and church is right. God is love and hope. 😢😢😢 And what is more sad is that this is true in some countrys still in 2022 😢😢 i am not lesby and i believe in God but i don t agree with those stupid ppl..we are all humans ,and we see every day ppl.beeing bullid for stupid reasons ..listen also to Movement from Hozier he is amazing❤
