Irish musician Hozier sits down with Zane Lowe for an in-depth conversation on the creative influences and songwriting process behind his third studio album, ’Unreal Unearth.'
Since his breakthrough hit "Take Me to Church", Hozier has continued to push himself lyrically, taking inspiration from literature, religion, and real world experiences in his personal life. Hozier shares that isolation allowed him to reset, clear his mind, and remove distractions in order to tap into a higher level of creativity and give him the momentum to pen the powerful tracks on this album. Hozier also discusses his relationship with Ireland, reflects on the success of "Take Me to Church", remembers Sinead O'Connor, and discusses spirituality more broadly.

When the pope visited Ireland a few years back Hozier joined a group of people who were protesting against the pope's visit, no fan-fare, just humbly turned up to support them. That's the measure of the man.

Yeah I realised this about Lowe a while ago. He's still a great interviewer faaarrr better than most I've seen interviewing musicians. But sometimes I think he pushes a lot for connection and relatability as the artist explains their work. It works with a few, but at times it doesn't land and feels like he's imposing an interpretation. Also I think he interrupts a lot probably cos of time constraints and maybe just the nature of a radio segment.

51:00 love Andrew's explanation of inspiration. It's very relatable as someone who writes. That hopeful feeling when an idea is still "embryonic" sometimes also makes it terrifying to actually take the idea and execute it, to turn it into something concrete. The initial idea/feeling holds so much promise, and you are at risk of losing or of weakening it by developing it.

When I first saw that Zane Lowe had interviewed Hozier, I began looking forward to a great conversation. I thought "Zane always asks the most profound and meaningful questions, and Hozier always gives the most profound and well-thought-out answers". What I wasn't expecting was for Zane to be constantly interrupting Hozier to pitch his own thoughts and opinions extensively. I like that he is quite a well-spoken and intelligent man who can sustain incredibly interesting conversations, but so are his guests, Hozier in particular. I couldn't help but feel frustrated because Hozier wasn't allowed to finish articulating his ideas.
@zelbernil3790
@zelbernil3790 9 месяцев назад
I'd rather have a lively enthusiastic convo than the other long form interview he had with that rocker. Yes the other interviewer let him speak extensively but had very little to add or engage Hozier. I felt like the opinions enriched this conversation and made Hozier felt understood and relaxed enough to open up more. The tangents felt like it prompted Hozier to speak on other topics that have not been brought up in his other interviews. I felt like I didn't know what he'll say next compared to other interviews where I could predict what he'll say because the topic has been tread on before. Even same questions are framed differently in this interview, illuminating other aspects and thoughts that Hozier had from the same subject already brought up in other interviews. It is very clear both men enjoyed the convo, I can see Hozier himself become truly excited and eager to explain his ideas and his train of thought ran smoother. It truly felt like two people "setting the world to rights", instead of Hozier feeling guarded and interrogated.

Listened to a few songs, and got here cause I workship Z.L. because he's a genious and fellow youngblood basically. Hozier's music isn't exactly what I usually listen to, but gosh. His lyrics have just captivated my spirit and being halfway into this interview I can only say I already chose I'm gonna become this adorable man's fan. I'm suddely so grateful, curious and just genuinely happy, exited & inspired to have all this wonderful content to catch up on. A little overwhelmed, but definitely in a good way!💖

I think this album paired with Lana Del Rey's Tunnel album is super healing and enlightening. Lots of tears!

Theres a song called "Irish goobye" and it reminds me so much of the things Hozier discusses about being irish. Its sung by a relatively unknown young woman, you should check it out :)

As brilliant as this was, I wish he hadn't kept interrupting Andrew mid sentence.

love this conversation and all the themes it touches ! it felt like the hour-long conversations me and my friends have about everything and zane and hozier riff off each other so nicely. also hozier saying he`s *not* an avid reader but throwing in references and lines from books and poems all the time - i wish i had the mind of the man

On that last bit of conversation - I know that our feelings and the concepts that we grapple with can’t really be explored any more in a 10 minute song compared to a 4 minute song, but god do I love a long meandering piece. Even if it will never manage to capture the full range of the human experience 😅 the beauty of it all is that even if one song “misses” something, I think we can all manage to spin meaning from another to fulfill that. It’s important to push out things that are meaningful because they all add to the collective. I love music so much. Anyway here’s wonderwall.

i always download social media to listen to interviews from him. and then he makes me remember why i wanted to not have it in the first place. in the way of i want to be so intelligent like him. i want to avoid the damage social media does and embrace the goodness of being present. he literally is my comfort person. i dont wanna be that person bcs no fan knows who he is really. like no one does unless we spend like hours with a person and even then you could argue its not enough to know someone. but hearing him talk and how he presents himself is so extremely comforting to me. as well as his songs. comfort comes from every single part of his existence for me aha.
