SORIN.!!!.Fet1. N CHANNEL... Fet 2 P CHANNEL.. how can u connect the gates of the 2 fets. Both have different requirements. Am i the only person to notice this!. 8131... N-Type Ap0203GMT P-type
@orange11squares
@orange11squares 9 месяцев назад
that is very crazy what they did there, indeed first mosfet is P-ch TPCC8131 and second mosfet is N-ch model AP0203GMT.. So connecting the gate of first mosfet to 25V is closing the mosfet . Current goes via internal diode. or maybe i am missing something.. i don't understand what they did there.

First MOSFET is P-channel not N-channel, and not connected to ACDRV. "Works" (inefficiently) regardless of Vgs because body diode is forward-biased so current can still flow.

25Vgs on the first mosfet is beyond absolute maximum ratings of that transistor. So that transistor is probably dead now.

The pin to the first gate was probably semi-shorted. That would explain the huge voltage drop when you connected the gates together. I would have applied some current first and see what's getting hot before applying 25V on the gate (and it's driver IC). Good job :)

No.. 1 N-type and 1 P- type. Bad move with jumper wire
@markkay8117
@markkay8117 9 месяцев назад
Yep! There are capacitors on the gates of those two mosfets. Looks like due to the water damage capacitor connected to the gate of the first mosfet was partially shorted. Smoke that Sorin fell after applying 25 volts to the gate was most likely coming from that partially shorted capacitor.
@markkay8117

@@laptopDoctorKZN According to schematics, both input mosfets are N-type and both gates are driven by the BQ chip.

i would connect the beeping mode and do a quick search in the area, this track will not go far away... most likely the damaged component was near the bq chip... maybe the track just shortly bridged some other tracks and appear again some mm near.

Great video and a working fix. But this is also a reason why no one wants to work on a laptop that was worked on by someone else before. I think Sorin said it too some day :)) We are dealing with same issue in software development. Some devs think about next guy and spend extra time "removing circuits" he just disconnected or at least leaving a comment. Others just throw some magic and go home. There is a limit how many times you can do this until codebase is no longer maintainable. Anyway it's an old laptop that will unlikely see another repair. So it's acceptable as last job. Nice Christmas for all of you!

@marksplace
@marksplace 9 месяцев назад
@@MrPnew1 So you've never broken a pad or had to fix a trace on a board? I've been soldering going on forty years now. Although up until recently I started getting more into micro soldering or smd work. I recently purchased a microscope and hot an air station to add to my bench. People can agree or disagree on whatever, although there are times where you need to jump something either temporary or permanently, that's just the way it is.
@MrPnew1
@MrPnew1 9 месяцев назад
@@marksplaceagreed, but it’s bad practice to use jumper wire to bypass fuses, coils and mosfets. I never suggested not using jumper wires for trace repair.
@Jan3Sobieski5
@Jan3Sobieski5 9 месяцев назад
@@MrPnew1 Sorin mentioned many times he only does that temporarily to see if the said component is indeed faulty to save time. He does replace the components later (either has to order or looks for one on donor boards)
@marksplace
@marksplace 9 месяцев назад
@MrPnew1 I ended up buying some 30awg wire as it seemed like a nice size for small circuits. That's when I got a little curious as to what it would take to burn it up. I ended it with 5v and 5amps and the wire didn't even get warm after leaving it sit there for upwards of a minute. I didn't want to stress out my power supply any longer knowing that any more than that is basically useless anyways as a make-ship fuse. I'm going to try and find the smallest wire I can and repeat the test. If one could use some small wire as a fuse it wouldn't be a bad thing if that's all you had at the moment. Although I think I'll also be searching for a kit of various size fuses to keep on hand as that would be the better choice. IMO
