Changing the cpu is pretty quick and easy to do also. All you have to do is remove dvd drive, remove hard drive tray, take out the two screws holding the hd/dvd frame, lift the tab on the dvd/hd frame and slide it towards the rear, the whole frame will come out of the computer. From there you can lift the fan and shroud in front of the heat sink, set it out of the way and the heat sink has four screws to loosen which can be loosened with a flat blade screw driver or the correct size torx bit. The CPU in the intel versions is an 1155 cpu and in the Amd versions an am3. The cpu's are limited by the old bios and the best Intel cpu that will boot is the I7-2600 and on the amd versions the best cpu that I've got to boot is the 960T X4. If you upgrade the cpu to the max and run 8 or 16gb of memory with an ssd drive the computer is plenty fast for everyday tasks.

I know this video is old but something you could do if you wanted to install another drive, is get one of those slim DVD Drive Bay to Laptop hard drive adapters. (Note: They come in different sizes.) And then for discs, just use a cheap external USB DVD drive. At least that's what I did. Although I only have one drive, since I can't seem to find the bottom tray part anywhere.

Slot on board can be used for a wi-fi card. Also you dont need to take front panel off to remove dvd drive, it will slide right through the front panel.

Just picked up one of these earlier today to use as a dedicated emulation box. You can use ddr3@1600mhz (12800), even though the manual says 1066 or 1333. In the process of installing a 2500k at the moment. Why I stumbled across your video. I couldnt work out how to remove the trays and didnt want to force any latches, etc. Hoping it works, but it uses more power than the 2400s, so Im half expecting it be unstable, especially with the mxm graphics card installed as well. I'll update the post and let people know how it went (Im sure other people will wonder at some point too, so a record of someone trying doesn't hurt). edit: works fine, but runs much hotter to the point of needing an extra fan or else it throttles down to being not much faster than the 2400s despite being about %35 faster a cpu.

The extra tall HDD bay looks like it has space for a 10.000 RPM drive without its vibration shield. I bet they didn’t sell those with the 8200, but the HDD tray might have been used on an earlier model.

3:10 - That looks like an M.2 slot. They aren't all the the same. Some are B key, some are M key, some are B+M key. The B+M key are SATA and slower than PCIe3 / 4. The B or M key are PCIe and much faster than standard hard drives. But not all M.2 slots are made for storage, some are for wifi cards and such. You'd have to figure out what the slot was designed to accept.

The little black connector you pointed to is a mini PCIe expansion card for WLAN, etc. More important to me is the white connector next to it: the mini-SATA (or mSATA) which the tech manual says is for an "ultra small SSD". The HP part for that slot (a 719566-001) only offers a humble 32gb storage. AND they run well over a hundred bucks refurb'd. No thanks. "Ultra-small" means "half-size". The cards that fit it have to be stubby, like 28mm in length vs ~50 for most mSATAs. Much as I'd like to swap out the old drive the way you did: 1) I hate to lose the existing 100gb of storage, and 2) I'm not sure where to order an SSD like the one you got that (amazingly) arrived as a perfect clone of your existing drive...😎 (manual: h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04331008.pdf)
