Part 4 of a series called "Generations" which compares subsequent generations of the HP EliteDesk 800 Mini. In this segment we compare the G4 to the G5.
Thanks for a great vid ... at first look, I could have sworn that the G4 looked just slightly wider than the G5, but I guess the interchangeable lids proves that they're the same width I guess =)
@@---GOD--- scared me for a sec 😀. Thought it somehow got corrupted. That's just me doing the video in the evening. Maybe I should do them in the morning after my dark roast cup of jo.😉
As long as you have the standard 19.5v 65w 3.33A you can use it everywhere. On my test bench I just have the one power supply and I connect G2, G3, G4, etc. only time you need the 90w is for the 65W units
Can you swap motherboards, let's say I bought the G4 but later on down the line I want to change it with the G5 MB, is this possible? [From the looks of the case, they look identical. I'm assuming it's a practical idea]
Hmmm, very interesting. The mounting holes would have to be identical but considering how similar the 4 and 5 are then it might work. I personally wouldn't try it unless I got a great price on the G5 mobo. Please let us know if you do attempt it.
I have a g2 that came with 1tb stick ssd I want to add the the 2.5 sata hard drive but I don't know the number of pins the sata flex cable holds so am not sure which one to buy
Basically any 2.5 SATA drive will work. I've used ones I pulled from laptops. SATA SSDs from Amazon, eBay, HP, etc. TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z 256GB SLC Cache 3D NAND TLC 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal Solid State Drive SSD (R/W Speed up to 520/450 MB/s) T253TZ256G0C101 a.co/d/hnRW1kz this is the last one I purchased
You misunderstood me,I already have a 2.5 drive but there is no sata cable that came in the mini PC i bout renewed one on Amazon but the flex sata cable is not there it was removed and replaced with a SSD for mdot slot
The cable has 7 pins plus another 8 pins. But I'm pretty sure the ribbon cable is unique to the hps themselves. I'd recommend checking out drive caddies for the EliteDesk on eBay. Often times the caddy will include the SATA ribbon cable. You might be able to find just the cable also on eBay.
Interesting since the largest HP will sell you is the 2tb. The language in the specs is vague on the drives and implies the limit is 2tb because that is all they sell. I don't have anything larger than 2tb to test unfortunately. Maybe other viewers have tried it.
Interesting - I had read others asking about 9th gen in the G4 and folks seemed to imply it wouldn't work. So most likely when I experimented with a 9700K it probably failed because of the variant - not because it was 9th gen
Interesting - I had read others asking about 9th gen in the G4 and folks seemed to imply it wouldn't work. Sounds like nothing special was needed on your part though. And this was with the 35W or 65W model?
Hi there! I literally bought a G5 after watching all the videos 😅😅. But, I have a question now… My motherboard is exactly the same as this one, but… I don’t have the graphics card connector…. There are the pins on the board, where the connector should be. Ready to be installed. But no connector… Do you think that means that I can’t add the RX560 to my i7 G5?! And… if possible, could you give me some hint to find this connector somewhere? Thanks for your feedback!
@@handmedowntechThank you for answering! Unfortunately no, I have no beige connector, just the soldering points where it should be… I made some research on this, and it looks like some motherboards have it, others don’t… with the same part numbers… I don’t really understand why for now. But most importantly, I can’t find the connector itself as a spare part. That’s frustrating 😂. At this point, my better clue is that 65W models can’t have it. But it’s just an assumption for now. Mine is a 65W. It’s a pain to find informations on this so… Thanks for your help 😁
What does it show as the model on the bottom of the case? Maybe also check other eBay listings for pictures of the inside to see if they show the connector.
It says « HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini » and not much more… it doesn’t say if this is a 65W but the processor is a i7-8700, 3.2 GHz. I saw the connector on certain boards on eBay, not all. I don’t know 😅😅
@@fredericb6307 sorry guy. Bummer that there must be some units without the connector and you happen to get one. Would it be worth it to see if the seller has a unit with the connector? Maybe an exchange.
Thank you for this video, I think I may go for a G4 instead of a G5. But before that one, I have been thinking of actually getting a 705 G4 which is AMD.
@@handmedowntech 705 that would be a 4 core, 8 thread CPU, but at around $100, the G4 with a 6 core i5 is about $150 and with a 6 core (12 thread) i7 goes above $200.
It just doesn't look like enough room there With or without the connector. I don't get why 35 watts like mine have the connector Don't you need more power if you add a GPU not less?
@@clubx1000 well as it turns out I did order the GPU and installed it on my G4. But try as I might the system would not recognize it. I don't know if it was a bad board or what. The fan on the GPU worked and if I didn't have it plugged in then the system said the graphics card fan was failing. So something thought it was there. I ended up returning it. Maybe down the road I'll try again.
Mini PCs are not for everyone but their small size makes them great for low power draw, space saving, and clustering. Plus they are just darn cute and fun to play with.
