Hello, I found your review of this late today, but managed to purchase one a day ago a little higher for $369 instead of $340. Do you think this HP is better than the Gateway 14.1" ips intel 11th gen i5 you reviewed ? How is battery life on both compare(5hrs vs 6hrs??) I know that one had the 16gb ram already while this is 8gb, and around 250 nits ips screen for both, & weight of both may be nearly the same. I will be comparing both of these refurbs next week when I have both in hand and will decide which one to keep.
@@tonedone490 personally I like this HP more than the gateway, even with less ram. the performance difference between the i5 and r5 is pretty substantial when it comes to CPU performance. iGPU performance is also noticeably better in the 5500U. I do appreiacate the better support that the intel iGPU has with video acceleration. Intel's quicksync is just better than what AMD currently has it pretty much makes the adobe performance comparable, though the gateway has the advantage of 16gb which makes it much better for editing. in terms of display, I also like the HP one slightly more. they're both dim glossy displays but the HP has nicer colors to me. but this is something that will vary between different units on account of them not coming precalibrated. I will say, I prefer a 14in laptop to a 15in for portability. battery life is compareble when it comes to stock settings. neither will give you more than 4-5 hours depending on workload.
@@EVOTech1 thanks for your comparison. What do you think of the speakers, are they better than Gateway? I'm hoping the HP sways me to keep it, the build quality looks a little more premium....That's really good to hear about the HP screen looking a little better, and ryzen being a little bit better than Intel for games. I've tried both CPUs and both seem really great for general everyday tasks. I will be making my decision on which one to keep 2 weeks from now. But I'm torn between the portability vs little better overall features of HP. Though, due to the thicker bezels of Gateway, I'm hoping the slightly overall bigger size is not a large difference for portability on HP. I guess battery life is very average for both.
I've had this laptop with the Ryzen 7 AMD for about 6 months and for $400-500, it's an amazing deal. Obviously not near as good as my regular rig, but for a fraction of the cost, this thing can handle a lot more than expected. Upgrade the ram a bit and you got a great portable machine.
I just bought one in March of 2023. It is much better overall than the HP I just retired. There are a few things that suck. Not enough ports, screen isn't bright enough, not sure about battery as I keep it plugged in or shut off. That being said.. I love this laptop so far but I have low standards
I searched for reviews of this laptop and yours is the first I came across. I just bought this at Walmart on clearance for $300, brand new. From reading these comments, I guess that is a good price. They were marking them down as I was walking past I'm not into gaming. I'll be using it for editing non professional pictures, creating documents, spreadsheets, etc. And some crafting software. Do you think the 8GB will be enough for me?
Bought one today, not refurbished. $389. The picture online, SAME model, looks like the F11 key DOES have the backlit symbol. I'm hoping they have added the backlit recently. I'll be mad if it doesn't. I'll have to look up how easy/hard it is to replace the keyboard...
Well after trying the refurb past few days, I might have a lemon. My laptop came with a very tiny dent on front corner. But that was not too bad. However, My laptop had wifi issues --no wifi at all when on battery. And it shuts down with blue screens if I continue to run it on battery. I've read 5 other reviews of this happening, so not sure if this is a power issue than could arise in any of these laptops in the life time of owning this device , or I just have one of the few bad lemons......So this might be a return for me........update: Forget what I stated above...updated drivers fixed everything. I just needed a later Wifi Realtek driver and all is ok now.
I’ll have to look into this. That seems like a very bad design flaw if it’s happening that frequently. I wonder if it’s just the Realtek WiFi card it comes with. I’m not the biggest fan of Realtek WiFi chips as those have been the most common ones to give issues, usually related to drivers. I much prefer the intel WiFi cards and I might just pick one up to replace the Realtek one. They are like 20 to 25 bucks on Amazon. With that said tho, Considering it’s both dented and having WiFi issues, it’s definitely a return. That refurbished gamble is real then. So far I haven’t been burnt yet but I’ll definitely look into how wide spread this issue is.
Hey bro I like your content! But yo I just bought this exact pc and I can’t figure out out to turn on the keyboard lights so my keys glow. How do I do that if it even has that option
I have this laptop I like it but I get this black screen that I can’t figure out when the laptop goes idle I’m not a computer guy so I don’t know the lingo
I just saw that laptop at a walmart in Naples Florida it is priced at 559. I went to return an MSI gaming laptop due to connection problems and I didn't like the yellowish color of the image and video either, I think glossy screens project better color for image and video editing. I make children's stories and machinimas with social life games like the Sims. I keep looking for the best option at an affordable price, I don't know if THIS HP laptop will work for me
@@EVOTech1 Yeah I always thought about upgrading RAM but I want to make sure its true colors ie black looks black not gray I want sharp true colors bright screen. At walmart I could only see the background lock image and it looked great, almost real, but it had a password and I couldn't see any more, I spoke to the clerk but she wasn't very willing to help me, she told me I could buy it and if not I liked it, I had 30 days to return it. I don't know why people put passwords on laptops that are in exivision. Thanks for answering.
@@Mimun2Artístico the screen is good by cheap laptop standards but if you need color accuracy, you either need to look into a laptop that comes precalibrated or calibrate it yourself. It's also dim at only 250 nits, so it's fine for dark or dim rooms but if you're in a bright environment, it can be hard to see sometimes. it's about as good as you can expect in this price range though.
@@EVOTech1 Thank you very much for your recommendation, I am very grateful. I will be sure or at least try to see in detail the image quality and colors of the laptop before deciding. I'll tell you what I finally did. Thank you.
hey quick question because its listed as 4x2 ram, are both sticks upgradable or is one of the stick soldered in the motherboard and only 1 of them are upgradable
they're both upgradable. here is a taredown of this specific chassis, as HP uses it for a large amount of models. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HQRZ0RFoliU.html
@@WizardOfClips sounds sick honestly. 8c/16t paired with 16GB or even 32GB would be a monster for a lot of workloads. I could seriously run my whole channel on a laptop like that. I'd appreciate if you'd share the temps you get when using it. I'm curious of the extra cores affect temps any. Enjoy the laptop my friend!
a lot of modern games really require 16gb. older AAA games, think pre 2013, will run fine and indie games will do fine. some e sports games like League and valorant will run fine but even games like CSGO, dota 2 and overwatch would be better with 16gb. some games will straight up not launch with only 8GB. Doom Eternal is one that comes to mind. with 16GB, it can actually be played, but with only 8GB, the game will not even launch.
Sir how do I get this shipped out of the US ? Am currently in NIGERIA 🇳🇬… lastly can you do a review on warzone with the 16gb ram version?? I would love to get one
im not sure if there are any services that ship from the US to world wide like that. When I get 16GB of ram I will test warzone. Right now, with only 8GB it crashes while loading.
Do not buy hp. Hp is probably the worst "popular" brand in terms of build quality and probably with a cheap device like this it would not last more than 2 years without breaking
Not really. The only thing you could do is reduce the TDP but then the performance will be worse. Essentially you can’t really do much to fix it without hurting performance.
Recently I found updating to the latest HP Realtek wifi driver fixed my internet issues while on battery. Another question.... Have you figured out if this laptop has a setting in BIOS to stop the battery from charging up to 100% all the time?? I only found Adaptive Battery Optimizer, but I don't know how or if that does anything. I was hoping to find a feature to only charge up to 80% to prolong the battery life, since I'm nearly always plugged in to an AC outlet.
Did you find an answer to this? As far as I know it's only HPs business laptops that have this feature, the regular ones like the pavilion don't which is idiotic from HP when dell and lenovo have these features as standard
You should be able to in the bios but it will do nothing to performance. The chip already automatically uses up all the ram it needs. It might help launch games that do a dedicated VRAM check but then you’ll need to increase it to 4GB to satisfy that.
pretty solid depending on the workload. gaming will be fine most of the time. Almost never goes above 78c for me, but it all depends on your ambient temps. It can get pretty got when pushing both the GPU and CPU hard though. highest I ever saw was 89c, but that was in an artificial workload where I pushed it harder than realistically would ever happen.
@@tanify2198 it depends on how careful you are with your electronics. It's built better than most cheap laptops but it's still just plastic so it's not going to be extremely durable. It's better build quality than the gateway I also own and that has been perfectly fine for me in the last year. if you're rough with your hardware then this will definitely not last you long. You'll probably want a laptop with an aluminum body so it's more durable.
@@EVOTech1 Oh hey, I just received my refurb in the mail today, and everything seems like it works perfectly. But it had one small cosmetic tiny dent to the aluminum on the front right corner tip near the palm rest. It doesn't bother me much, so I might keep it. But Do you think I should return it and try again to get a perfect one? (Someone must have dropped it lightly on the corner to the ground, since there was one very faint hard to see small micro scratch on the same corner of top lid.
@@tonedone490 I'm not sure how Walmart support is for returns like that but if it's convenient enough, sure why not? It all depends on how easy it would be to get a another refurbished unit since they go out of stock a lot.
