In our HP ProDesk 600 G4 Mini review, we see how this unit stacks up to our other Project TinyMiniMicro nodes we have tested. We also look at what we found on the vPro side and offer guidance there as well as on upgrading the Flex IO port in these units. Finally, we discuss the value of this unit compared to the ProDesk 400 G4, EliteDesk 800 G4, and some of the other units from Dell and Lenovo.
Also, we are trying a few new light/ camera/ lens options in this video, some did not go well. Still working on this.

We just completed a campus-wide upgrade of every single one of these we had and replaced them all with EliteDesk 800 G6's. Keep an eye out for a huge lot of them to hit the secondhand market. It's truly amazing the specs that they can have now. We have a handful of the new G6 models with Core i9s and 64 gigs of ram.

Just managed to get exactly this unit for €200, and it is a great little machine. Great for office work, as a home management node, and it can even do retro gaming.

Two nvme drives is a killer feature imo. I suspect many people will go with the hp version USFF machine for that feature alone.

Great series, thanks for these. - I want to build my own kubernetes cluster, I think 2 controllers & 3 workers to start, but I am not sure what spec I should get. - keen to see more on Kube.

Thanks for all the in depth reviews of those mini PC's but I think or rather would like to see a project coming out of it. Now that we know almost every revision of those wouldn't it be time to get our hands dirty and start some kinda HA storage and Proxmox cluster or whatever? That's what I'd love to see now! That would be super helpful! EDIT: What also would be amazing to see is a home VDI infrastructure, built on Proxmox and GVT-g ;) But yeah don't think that is realistic to expect. Still keep up the great work! You rock!

I have an HP Elite Desk 800 G1 DM with a converted quad-core, 8 thread i7 4870HQ in it, boosts up to 3.7 GHz even under current throttling. Since people are gutting MacBooks for 7th or 8th gen CPUs, I can see great value in these pint-size Office box with high performance mobile CPUs.

These make beautiful Plex servers. The extra memory can be configured as a RAM drive for ultra fast transcoding, the NVMe drive is perfect for booting and/or Metadata and you can add an external drive up to 18TB for media storage. The i5-8500T works very well for hardware transcoding because of QuickSync. The 400/600 G4/G5 and an external EasyStore take up very little space and don't even need a keyboard, mouse or monitor if you access it remotely. That optional port can be a serial port, DP, HDMI, VGA or USB-C - you just need to change the card.

If you’re okay with a little larger sizes you can get some really nice deals on the sff towers. I managed to get a HP elitedesk 800 G2 sff with a core i3 6100, 8gb of ram, windows 10 pro, and a 3tb WD red drive for ~$100.

@@redone823 Sure. My goal was to have a few actual bare metal cluster nodes (not VMs) and join them into a cluster. Right now it's a kubernetes cluster that runs my personal website and a few experiments that I run for fun. For example: run an R application as a web api or just in general getting some experience with docker since I'm also using that at work.

It's weird seeing computers that were until recently actively deployed at my workplace. I mentioned in another one of the project's videos we have EliteDesk 800 G4's with proper i5-8500's onboard. They are beastly mini computers and we have not had a single complaint of slowness with them

What's more, I've been allowed to take some of our decommed 800 G2's home with i5-6500t's. A little hampered in comparison and I needed to supply my own storage but they've been fun to work with. I went with an IP KVM instead of setting up vPro, since I don't quite have that infra up and ready. Now to get a proper kvm console.

I'm still curious what the actually difference(s) are between the ProDesk 600 G4 Mini and EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini for similar configurations - from watching your videos on both, my guess is not much. From reading the specs, it seems like configuration (the EliteDesks can support 65watt CPUs) and a discreet GPU option in the 800. I recently found someone who would ship me a ProDesk 600 G4 Mini with an i7-8700T for $350 USD with no RAM or SSD (it had 2x8gb modules and SATA). Got 2x16gb used DDR4 for $80, and a new Samsung 1tb NVMe for $120. I think it should make quite a powerful little workstation for ~$550 USD. According to benchmarks, the 35 watt i7-8700T has a pretty close single thread performance to the full 65 watt i7-7700 (4% less?), but a much higher multi thread performance due to the addition of another 2 core (25% more?). I'm guessing a 35 watt should also be quieter as well as throttle less frequently. Something to consider when looking at these machines ...

I am new to home labs and have found your channel multiple times through different searches for tips and tricks on computers, but I find there are SO many terms that I dont understand and so sometimes a home lab video can confuse me quite a bit! So the only difference between this and the EliteDesk 800 G4 is that vPro has been artificially disabled? (it's a feature of the 8500T cpu)

Recently bought one of these in the SFF version with the 8700 i7 and no wireless. Great machine so far, replace a 2012 mac mini. (running Linux on desktop)

nice content.. QUESETION: are the display ports dual mode so can just use a adapter cable or will i need to use an active adapter to run hdmi out of them? I ask bec i want to use the flexport for another USB port and just use a displaypot->hdmi cable with one of the two displayports.... thanks!

No but some of these TMM will let you mirror drives in BIOS using the chipset. I usually just software mirror for Linux

@@ServeTheHomeVideo That's great, as previously to put Win Server on one of these Lenovo mini's I had to hack Server to allow a Windows 10 driver to be installed as there was nothing official for Server. It wasn't pretty.

HDMI is configured in the rear option port. We have DisplayPort in ours, but HDMI was an option. You can also get a DP to HDMI converter.

Any time you're looking at a mini PC designed for a corporate environment, you have to bare in mind that gaming is not in mind in the design of these things. And upgradability to make it into a gaming rig is not feasible. The best you can hope for is to make it into an emulation box. And we're talking systems like Gamecube at the latest.

Still going strong! (Before you roast me for going 2200g, not everyone is born rich or become rich. And I'm still 17!)

You need to talk about the Power SUpply, what is needed, because most of them are sold with the power supply and harddrive missing. The Display ports instead of HDMI is a NON-starter. I know displayport is technically better, but nothing uses it. You'll never find a monitor or TV in a thrift store with Display port. I have hundreds of SVGA monitors, a dozen DVI monitors, two HDMI monitors, and no Displayport. That "optional slot" filled with an ancient SVGA connector is because no tech in his right mind would use Displayport... instead option for something.. ancient. That someone paid extra for that is an overt damnation of the two DisplayPorts built in right next to it. USB-C is total garbage, I've fried equipment by plugging in USB-C cables, stick to USB-A. It's more resilent and rated for millions of more cycles. Don't phwwck with a standard :) USB-C cane eat hawtd3th and d1e.
