Update: You no longer need to do the registry edit to turn off the mutiple virtual monitors, you can now do this via the settings menu for the headset.
Just bought a G2 to replace my Rift S. Nightmare to install because no matter what it just wouldn't connect. I'm not running junk; I've got a RTX3090, Ryzen 5900x on an Asus X570 with a 1000W Corsair PSU. I figured out that it was likely the USB connection thanks to this and a few other videos from the community. Reverted back to GEN3 for the PCI express in the motherboard after flashing to the latest BIOS and making sure everything was up to date with the latest drivers and stuff. No dice. Also tried every USB port multiple times. The fix was a POWERED USB3 hub. Fired right up. And yes I installed it with the power supply and in the correct order. Didn't matter. Can't say that it will work for everyone, but I do know that in my situation with an X570 motherboard that it solved the issue. I picked up the 4 port "Insignia" (BestBuy house brand) for like $30 because it was the only thing close on a Saturday. Had about 2500 positive reviews and fixed my problem. As for the G2 itself....damn. I like it a lot. The FOV "issue" in my opinion is blown way out of proportion. I will probably change the pad because it is not very comfortable and is digging into my ample, yet supple cheeks. The image quality is so good.....it is a hungry beast and even with a pretty damn OP system I get dips at full resolution. I do simracing and old school Assetto Corsa is my go to (with SOL and CSP) and I can run full res during the day; at night it starts to get a bit crappy in spots. However I can back down things like MSAA which I had to have cranked to the max with the Rift S where it still looked poor. 80% resolution seems to be the sweet spot so far.
I'm about to try plugging into my usb card later. Lost the adapter until just before bed. Also planning bios update. Curious if you had audio source switching issues and if this fixed it. FOV...yeah. people expect far to much. It isn't enough it is VR, and that there are limits imposed by the computer itself and hardware limits, but let's demand to never see the edge of the fov. I don't even usually notice it.
I have the same system, except a gigabyte eagle 3080. No issues with plug and play. Still finding ideal settings for iRacing. Ill have to downgrade the resolution in steam, and have less geforce colour correction. Keen to check out automobilista 2. My biggest issue with VR is the focal point and eye strain
For those who do wear glasses there is the VR Optician who makes Prescription Lens inserts for the G2, this will allow you to make the FOV mod mentioned here for those who choose to do so. They start at about $70 USD and for slightly less they make a non prescription version to protect the VR screens from scratches etc They don't come with Install instructions in the kit, however they have a RU-vid video that shows you how to do that. a web or RU-vid search for VR Optician will link you to them.....
Can I do this FOV mod with the prescription lenses? Because prescription lenses will bring the lens closer to the eye and FOV mod will do too. So it would be bad to do both and then my eyes touch the lenses?
@@frankvolker998 I think your over thinking this here.....I had a hard time with glasses on and using the G2 so I got the script lenses and it actually worked out better and more than comfort wise.
@@irongoatrocky2343 thx for the answer. I just thought that its 2 different problems. The glasses-inside-the-vr-headset is a problem and the g2 has kind of a weak sweet spot. my glasses fit nicely under the face gasket but if i look around everything is blurry. the sweet spot is very small so i am interested in tickling out the very best improvement
Bumping this post. I've had amazing customer experience with VR Optician. There was a problem which was not their fault and yet they didn't hesitate offering to help me out with my problem. Simply topic drawer support!
Honestly i have the Odyssey plus and i "upgraded" to the G2 i kept the Samsung and apart from the slightly better resolution on the G2 the Samsung still wins for me yes that VR cover is great !!
Thanks for the video, I didn't follow the instructions I just plugged it all in Np I'll pull the power 1st next time . I have gotten those visual hiccups dayone. It's good practice to backup before editing in regedit.
Hey thanks so much! I got a great deal on one back in November but haven't cracked it open due to bein sick. I saved this video, and cool workarounds! Instant subscribe 😎👍
I haven’t looked yet, but I wonder if someone has made a thin faceplate STL that could be 3D printed. You could add a little thin soft cover but it would preserve the nose piece.
Nice work. I already tested it with the Odyssey Foam and yes, FOV was better and for me, the option to look at my keyboard is also positiv (DCS needs to much buttons), but ist wasn‘t comfortable for me. I still don‘t know which one is better for me, the Index or the G2.
Do you have both the Index and G2 currently? They both have their benefits and weaknesses. I give it 5 more years until we'll have the near perfect all round headset for about £600, then it will be a case of bringing the the price down for the masses.
@@HamVR Yes, I have both. Indeed, both habe ther benefits and weaknesses. Because the index is already close to perfect, I think it will be less than five years. Since I owned the Index, I assumed that I would only try something new again with an Index 2. The Reverb was more of a spontaneous attempt. Since I owned the Index, I assumed that I would only try something new again with an Index 2. The Reverb was more of a spontaneous attempt. My history with VR headsets starts with an Oculus CV 1 and in between I had an Odyssey Plus, a Vive Pro, a Pimax 5kx and an Oculus Quest.
Agree. Hope we get some good alternatives after the summer 2021. All the pieces are there and it's been proven that you can release high resolution HMD's without worrying about people having hardware to use it fully. It's worth it anyway. Now we need (IMO) an Index HMD (or better) with a G2 screen (or better) and Oculus like inside out tracking and controllers. I'm sure the Index is great as it is and inside out tracking is not for everyone, but I am NOT putting up cameras or basestations on my walls again. And even if the Index controllers and basestations are great, I think this is where you can cut the cost a bit.
I have this set but connection issues are frustrating me soooo much. One day it works fine, the next day it won’t connect and keeps asking me to connect the Vr glasses. 🤯 yesterday I gave up finding the solution and left it for dead. I saw one RU-vid video where the cable was broken on arrival. A replacement solved all issues there so I think I need to call for RMA also.
Great tips, I was just wondering something about the FOV mod. How does it work with the cable? I mean...doesn't it press against your head through the cover ?
The VR Cover sponge is so deep that I couldn't feel the power cable and I found it more comfortable that the standard face gasket and sponge. Everyones face shape is different so your mileage will vary. For me it was spot on.
@@HamVR That makes sense, I will definitely try it. As a seated VR-player I really love the headset, zero tracking or controller issues... it's just the FOV and sweet-spot. Hopefully this makes it a little bit better.
No so much recently, I tend to use official gasket more for longer sessions as it is better at lining up your face with the lens. I would imagine the new thinner official gasket would be best option but I haven't tried one yet.
I've had a dig around in the WMR app and SteamVR app and no, there is no brightness adjustment currently which is quite a strange omission. Looking at the Reverb Reddit under FAQ 8. Is it possible to change the display brightness? "It is not currently possible or planned, but they may implement this later depending on user feedback."
Can you do this same test , with the same version of the program with the Quest 2.. Sebastian MRTV used a different version I believe and that is why it gave such different results.. Regardless of IPD and face shape the object only has a certain room to go on the panels.. IT can't go further no matter what your faceshape/IPD is. U can look at the very edge of the actual display to see where it stops completely.
I would like to use the G2 has a training tool and project the flying into my desktop screen in real time so I can see what is my student doing , any suggestions how to do it and without killing my RTX 3080?
Do anybody else see black borders at the edge of the panels in the g2 ? Even with using the original face gasket the borders appear when adjusting the headset. If it is closer to my eyes it feels like looking at a big screen with 3d
is there actually anything wrong with the multiple monitors thing? is it more of an annoyance rather than something that prevents the headset from working properly?
Yes, for me it caused unpredictable behaviour with my other displays. One of mine monitors disabled itself and Nvidia setting disappeared until I rebooted. I was turning off/unplugging my other monitors until this fix. It seems to be ok now.
I notice off centre image distortion when I look arround. Looking forward and straight on it is very clear which makes the none centre areas look slightly blurry.
thanks for the useful info! I ordered a G2 today. I do wear glasses. Do you think if I get lens inserts (which will add a bit of height to the lenses), the cover mod will be too thin?
i found with the oculus rift CV1 puting in lens adaptors i had to stick on an extra layer of foam padding as the lens adaptoros were pushing into my face causing pain. With the Rift S u can adjust the face plate moving it closer or further away to adjust FOV for wearing glasses or lens adaptors. but again with lens adapotors i had to move it further away reducing FOV. Looking at the lens adaptors for the G2 they look thicker than the rift ones. so might have to put a thicker gasket on which will reduce FOV even further. with glasses it will depend on the frame of the glasses and the thickness of the lens u have in them. thin frames/lenses u can problay have the gasket closer but thick frames and lenses u might have to have it further away. My G2 is ariving early next week so ill see how it is wearing glases before i get a lens adaptor. But u might be able to use it without glasses. I found with the CV1 everything was a blur without glasses but with the rift S it was still farely clear without my glasses on. The lens adaptors can be a bit hit and miss as they dont always get it right and it might make it worse rather than better. reason for that is u send in ur prescription and they make it from that. But that is usualy the wrong prescription as u need a dif one for VR. Best option is go to ur optition and get ur eyes tested for VR so they can give u the right prescription for VR. It will cost more than the online VR lens makers but it will be more to ur prescription. they should also work out ur IPD for u as well and put that into the lenses. Might have to try several diff optitions to find 1 that does the VR eye tests though as not all have the equipment to do the tests. Found that out when i asked my optition for my IPD and they refused and said dont use the online lenses get them to test my eyes for VR instead. but that might be just them trying to get money out of me lol. IPD for glasses will be diff from what u use in VR as ur eyes r a lot closer to the screen.
I've unplugged & plugged the headset several times "out-of-sequence" without the headset exploding or anything along those lines. Maybe the matter differs in regions with 240v ?
Hey @Ham VR. Would like to say awesome video. I am however having a issue. I Have a 3 monitor set up. Just got my HP reverb g2 a few weeks ago and noticed it doesnt connect unless I unplug one monitor from my gpu.I have followed your steps for the reg edit however I cant seem to get my headset to work. Im back to WMR portal saying "Make sure your headset display cable is plugged in correctly" which is the problem I was facing before learning I had to unplug one monitor. I am on windows version 1909 and have a 2080ti if that helps.
It will however work if I again unplug one monitor. I feel like the reg edit still wont allow me to use 3 monitors and then still be able to jump into VR on the fly. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Hmm very odd indeed. What resolution are your 3 monitors, are they 4k? Are they all on DP connections or a mix? I wonder if the G2 plus three 4k monitors is going beyond the desktop render limit of your GPU. If you have other sockets spare on your GPU (e.g. HDMI, DVI, DP) you could see if different combination works or try lowering your desktop resoultion (and or refresh rates). Failing that does just switching a monitor off work? (saving you having to physically unplug it all the time).
So how has this monitor fix worked out for you guys ? Whats the actuall improvements? I didnt really got that? For me for example, ALL WMR headsets I've had has always flickering in DCS and some other games/ simulators WHEN Loading... Could this be a fix for that F Enojing ISSUE ?
I have an ipd of 67, barely within limits. Would you still recommend the fov mod? The stock faceplate doesn't fit my face that well so i really want to try something else.
I think the mod is definitely worth a try for the money. I found the fov mod more comfortable for me which was it added bonus. Not sure about your IPD though. I found with my eyes closer to the lens I had to set the IPD wider for the best image. I'm not sure why though.
I bet you're wondering why Planes are tiny... THIS FOR SCALE SIZES & BEST PERFORMANCE... I just set Game to 100% and G2 WMR Dev Tool at 50% which adds to the same as I was using previously but in smaller scale of 80% Game + 70% WMR Developer Tool which you do need for the G2 to fix best performance also. Get it from MS Store and keep the main APP installed. MSFS VR HOW TO GAIN 50% MORE FPS!! HP REVERB G2 - RU-vid
I used a soft reading glasses case and drew out the nose piece and cut it out. It's soft and it gets rid of 100% of the light bleed. i.imgur.com/SELkke5.jpg i.imgur.com/vzVD01a.jpg
ps get your wife some precription adapters. I scratched mine while using glasses one sad day despite having plenty of distance to the lenses. i was trying to take it off and my glasses came off with it and dropped on the lens. also 90 is so disappointing for stock. even 96 is. I heard it had more... my vive gets me 120c if I use my 6mm foam. but even with my adapters for glasses i can only get 115 max. which is slightly uncomfortable cause my nose slightly touches the adapters. so I get more like 105. but with contacts the 120-115 is just amazing.
I really dont believe you will shortcircuit the headset, by plugging in power adapter, before pluggin into PC. I can’t fathom how that would happen. If ... that would happen. The headset would shortcircuit in any case. BTW I plugged mine in to power first.
Would you consider modding hp reverb g2 using aspheric lenses to increase sweet spot and sharpness? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mz625xCrL2M.html
But you changed your IPD setting! Your IPD doesn't change. It's fixed. ie: the distance between your pupils looking straight ahead. You can't really compare the FOV of both setups if you change the IPD setting. Just randomly changing your IPD is a sure road to nausia!!
I wasn't adjusting the IPD randomly, I was adjusting for clarity. The sweet spot seems in a different position with the lens closer. I don't know if this is do the with shape of the lens or if they are angled slightly but there is a difference.
I wouldn’t touch this headset with a 10 foot barge pole!! The verdict is clearly in now that people have bought and tested it, and not just You tubers. A screen that will only give a nice sweet spot for the 1% of the population with the perfect headshape?! The MOD won’t do much either unless you have that perfect headshape. What a disaster this headset will be for HP. Many returns now happening.
Ya the flickering has been annoying but only happens if I have the volume above 90. The blue on the edges also seems to be a bug or something and goes away if I restart the wmr portal app. Hopefully these issues are patched soon!
how about the fact ,that this thing is absolutely unusable with many amd motherboards,...,because it doesn't recognize f§"$"ing usb 3.0 drivers!!!700euro piece of useless plastic!
Vendor rep who handles the distribution for the product here in US stated that they are getting 15-20 returns a week. Was an easy decision to decide on whether to wait for a replacement or return. Glad I did.
