A wideband O2 sensor sends a 0-5 volt signal (Lamda) to your ECU/Wideband gauge. Your ECU/Wideband gauge does some calculations to provide you with the AFR number that you see. Different fuels like E85 vs Gasoline have different AFR that is required for idle, WOT, cruise, etc. There is not as much energy in E85 so you have to run a lot richer AFR with E85. His point in this video in why you should use Lamda vs AFR is that the voltage (Lambda) from the wideband O2 does not change regardless of the fuel type you use. In other words 0 volts is rich and 5 volts is lean regardless of the fuel you use. The wideband is measuring O2 content not the type of fuel your using. If you log the 0-5 volt signal (Lambda) from the wideband and learn what is rich and what is lean voltage wise you will never have to learn the proper AFR for each type fuel out there, gas, methanol, E85, etc. I did not know this until watching his video and doing a little supplemental reading to get a better understanding.

I don't know how I just found this. Been in my own little tuning world for 15 years. You are the kind of detail oriented, little by little, one step at a time, write everything down, kind of guy that I am. AND YES, I have seen where the "blow up" point is. Thanks so much for making this series. Back in the late 90's up to around 2009 I used a 3rd party tuner and later an HPTuners to optimize my '99 GTP Grand Prix. Ran a cam headers, ported heads and supercharger and a smaller pulley for more boost. With my custom tune, not only did it run completely knock free on 87 octane, it ran low 13.1's all day long with a police radar verified top speed of 163mph and here is the best part... 39mpg on the higherway at 70mph. Not bad for a 4-door, 5 person grocery hauler. This was before my RU-vid days, and I had made the most comprehensive tuning guide on the web for the Grand Prix around, and just like you... for free. Being really late to the party, I just picked up an '04 Z06 vette, and you have piqued my interest in tuning again! Gen 3 LS motors are all new to me, but thanks to your help, I think it will be fun to just play around with and see if I can attain 450hp and 40mpg just for the pleasure of learning. Thanks again!

I’m really curious, is high gas mileage and that kind of horse power realistic? That would be pretty awesome
@JerryPH
@JerryPH 4 года назад
@@dannynavarro9836 Realistic? Sure, I drove it around like that for 2 years and helped tune at least a couple dozen other Pontiac 3.8 litre supercharged cars to very similar results... and if you do a search here in RU-vid and search for Eco Vette, you will see a guy with a 375+ HP C5 coupe that does 40mpg on the highway thanks to some good tuning via HPTuner... I was far from the first and far from the last! :)
@dannynavarro9836
@dannynavarro9836 4 года назад
JerryPH that’s awesome, I have a 2000 dodge Dakota with the 3.9 and I wanted to supercharge it as well, would have to fab up an adapter plate since there’s no after market support like the 3.8 you had. I was kinda worried that it would effect the mpg since I daily it but that would be sweet
@JerryPH
@JerryPH 4 года назад
@@dannynavarro9836 It's a combination of many things, weight, aerodynamics, gearing, environmental conditions, engine supporting mods as well as that good tune that we are all trying to learn about here, and a lot of experimentation. I used to spend $200 a weekend in gas alone jut driving around and tuning over and over, making small changes. It was more about the journey and fun more than any final specific goal for me.
@MikeHarris1984
@MikeHarris1984 Год назад
@@JerryPH Doing the driving around the tune is the pain part... drive, data, make change, write PCM, NEXT... and repeat... Makes me jealous of people with unlimited Dyno use at their fingertips, lol. I tuned my '05 GTO with my first MVPI 1 (the OG model that I JUST changed up about a year ago to get the 2+, and not 3 is out), where I port and polished the heads, did exaughst (x-pipe/headers/mufflers), intake, port TB and runners, upgraded lifters, bearings, rings, block casting/flashing to return oil back down faster, and put a CAM in. I loved that car, and still do, just been in the garage for 2 years.... I've also tuned someones Camaro where he upgraded the rear gearing and tuned for the new gear ratio for speedo and made some changes to make it a little faster and better, tuned my grandpas C6 3LT Z51 M6 vette and he LOVED that car and then tuned his C7 1LT A8. I am tuning my C7 3LT Z51 now that I just purchased and my wife's '22 Explorer ST with lots of bolt on goodies and upgrades... starting a tune on a vehicle that has 8 miles on the OD is nice... LOL...

I really appreciate all of your videos, For a beginner like me, you have been a HUGE help! It is alot of information to digest, but very very good information. Can you go back to Tuning 101 and make like an order of operations list for different applications? I have a gen 4 L76 with headers and bolt ons, and I have followed along and gotten my HP tuners and AEM wide band all set up and recording properly. I am ready to dig in but not quite sure where to start with the tuning process, (other than reducing timing for saftey before I start changing parameters). 1) Starting from square one with basic bolt ons, do I start with speed density then move to MAF tuning then timing advance? 2) I will be changing the cam shaft this winter. Where would you start in that application when the engine internals have changed but still N/A and pump gas? I know that will really throw calibration off compared to simple bolt ons. 3) Or even more extreme example, if you had rebuilt your stock motor with different heads, cam, injectors, a forced injection set up, and switched to E85, where would you even start the tuning process at that point? (Id assume the new motor wouldnt even fire up on the original factory ECM calibration?) I feel you have put all the proper information out there for us beginners, I just dont feel very clear on where to start the process per application if that makes sense. And lastly, when will you be doing another live stream? THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE THESE VIDEOS FOR US!!!
@GoatRopeGarage
@GoatRopeGarage 5 лет назад
Harry, that's a lot to dig into but to answer your first question you can do either fueling method first, I generally do MAF as is it easier and you can the vehicle up and running on the MAF alone quick. Then I do speed density followed by timing. And good idea on the order of operation video!

Tuning in AFR numbers can be fine if you always leave everything in gas scale, people who switch to e85 AFR numbers and what not then go back to tuning pump 93 stuff you'll get mixed up switching back and forth. I have always tuned e85 and pump gas cars as if they were both regular gasoline. A NGK AFX wideband only displays in gas scale so makes it easy. 14.68 is lambda of 1.0 on it no matter what fuel it's sniffing. 11.00 AFR on that wideband is the same on e50, e85 and 93 oct

@Christopher Hubbard >As a dealer tech from the single wire O2, to 4 wire O2 sensors and now wide band. I cannot answer your exact question but they have differences regarding the sensors activity. While a heated O2 sensor heats up, once it starts moving above or below 0.5 Vdc, then the PCM changes from “Speed Density” function changes to active MAF mixture ratio feedback. A broad band O2 sensor is smaller mass, shaped like a pop-cycle sticks and heats up quicker. The main difference is the broadband signals how lean or rich and recognized by the PCM will make very minor adjustments. So, closer to very accurate air fuel injector adjustments. The Ziconia non broad band only swings it’s rich / lean signal as it passes a PCM programmed air / fuel signal. Regardless, the broad bands signal is recognized by software and not the type of sensor. If I am wrong, this is how GM taught us. To increase fuel economy while running well, if you swap them with the correct connectors that fit, I truly believe that very little difference will be noticed unless the PCM is able to recognize and react in a positive manner. Hope this helps and remember, the heater circuit is on with the key.

So with no tuners available in my area I’m trying to get a handle on HP tuners while I’m stock. Once I feel ambitious enough I’ll install the cam and bolt-ons. Then I’ll have 8 months to get better at tuning before I install the turbo. I’ve played a little with the tuner and I definitely have much to learn! Thanks again for the videos, I’m sure I will have many questions lol

great videos on my second time watching before i do my own. I just rebuilt my 6litre LS in my 2006 silverado and added a mild cam and have have a rough idle. i bought a MPVI3 and don't have a a wide band and am hoping to get it tuned well enough to break in and do some towing, then i will buy a wide band and do more precise tuning. At this time iI am not interested in huge performance just enough for daily driving and towing.

Great vid ! You just got a new sub!!! Just picked up a 01 WS6 and am ready to go down the rabbit hole. Was flippin back and forth between HP and Efi ... any advantages with going efi over hp ? Also will i need to go with the hp pro to be able to take full advantage of tuning and run a wide band O2 ? Just gonna do heads cam exhaust to start...really leaning to boost down the road. Great channel!!! Cant wait to learn as much as i can.

Hey! like your videos very informative, got I installed a mild cam on my 2004 silverado and I need to tune the idle and what else do you recommend to tune for towing trailers? Mean like maf or map, airflow, transmission point, trans fluid pressure ? I got hp tuner to work on. thank in advance!
@GoatRopeGarage
@GoatRopeGarage 4 года назад
I would probably do the basics as they are going to give you the power you're looking for, as far as trans, I would pay attention to where the TC is locking up and just make sure your in a good zone there since an unlocked convertor creates a lot of heat even without a trailer

I wish I would have taken a little more time researching tuning before I bought a new cam and valve springs. I was under the impression that I could have my 5.3 ls tuned for under 600.00 and thought I could buy a stand alone and tune it for 1000.00 Sad that the cheapest cam swap possible cost 2000.00 and that's without labor. All due to needing to adjust the timing and adding fuel. I want my distributer and carb back. Then all I need is a timing light 9/16 wrench and a jet kit and it's done.

I have been looking at the Autel MS919 and was trying to find out if it could do "tuning". The HP Tuner package may be more on what I am looking for. If I understand this package will do in-depth OBD2 diagnostics as well as tune your car!! It seems to have an easy UI. Problem is I have Nissan/Infinitis, Toyotas, Fords and Mercedes ... with a sprinkling of other crap. Thoughts ... my current issue is a replaced a board in my auto tranny in the C230 and now I need to teach it,, can the system do this as well?

Hey Kyle, I’m totally new at all of this tuning stuff. I grew up around old school, hot rod muscle. Give me a carburetor and a distributor a jet set some springs. I can tune a car. However, I’m starting to mod my 2007 Chevy Silverado and I’m finding out that I need to learn how to tune the newer ecu controlled motors. Can you tell me what I need in hp tuner. Or if you have a video that I missed. A few questions that I have are, do I need a laptop? Pros, cons of using a laptop. If I buy the hp tuner that plugs into the OBD all I need is to download the software? Again I’m new to this and sorry for the lame questions.

Not always “one mod at a time” With break-in oil in the crankcase, my understanding of the break-in procedure to seat new cams and hydraulic lifters is that the engine not be allowed to idle for the first 20 minutes following initial start-up. As soon as the lifters pump up, the engine is to be brought up above 2,000 RPM and maintained above that level for the first 20 minutes. Slight revving between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM is beneficial. From a tuning aspect, this procedure has me really worried. First of all, it’ll be a miracle if the engine even starts after all that I’m doing to it (e.g., forged internals, bigger turbo, exhaust manifold, intake manifold, larger intake piping, bigger throttle body, injectors, fuel pump, race cams, new valves and valve springs), Most of these variables require a new tune. How do I get around this (relatively) high engine speed when the stock tune is likely to be way off from the beginning? The only hardware I can hold off installing in order to tune “one mod at a time” would be the bolt-ons such as the intake manifold, fuel injectors, and fuel pump. Based on your amazing videos, I’m thinking the thing to do might be to go for MAF tuning and a rich mixture to begin. Any advice on how to safely start tuning a new engine when “one mod at a time” doesn’t apply? Greg

I saw that for I use HPTuner I need to buy credits for the ECU I want tune, but after I buy the credits and get the ecu licensed can I modify the parameters many times I want? or I have to buy credits every time I want to make changes?
@jasons3123
@jasons3123 3 года назад
Once you license a vehicle, you can reflash as many times as you want. You simply purchase credits for the vehicles you want to tune. Also, you can use the MPVI device and software to download the tune from a vehicle to look at it, but you cannot make a change or reflash it back to the vehicle unless you have licensed it. Also, you don't have to buy credits to scan vehicles.

I check the air fuel ratio and it reads 14.7, but I can smell the cats when car is warming up. I had already had a tune for the BBK Cold air, then up the idle to 990 with the SCT Tuner. I don't want to load up the cats or melt them down. Is this normal to smell the cats a little when warming up, I know the cam lobes or 109 centers maybe letting a little extra out??
