I finally have my answer to a question I have wondered about for the past year, "which is faster, HP or torque?" In this video I show my process for discovering the best shift point for my F-150 when on E-85 gas.
Remember that every vehicle will have difference performance characteristics. This was my story with this Ford F-150 truck.

Torque is twisting force. HP is a function over time; the amount of force it takes to lift 1000 pounds 1 foot off of the ground in one minute. I have 2 explanations of TQ vs HP. 1) A football lineman produces TQ. the wide receiver streaking down the field produces HP. 2) TQ is the twisting force applied to your forearm by a thug; HP is how fast that TQ is delivered to your forearm before it breaks.

I like the examples, and the more ways the concept is communicated the better chance it will sink in for anyone that isn't quite there yet with understanding it. Thanks!

I’ve always looked at torque as the breakout power. However they go hand in hand, they are nothing more than just a component of each other. For racing applications you definitely want to chase horsepower however for pulling/towing you want to primarily chase both with the torque being the higher of the 2 for that breakout power when you weigh 80,000 lbs plus.

nope, not when gears are involved. M1 Abrams Tank has less then 400 ft lbs of torque and is what, 130,000 lbs, quick off the line and fast.

@@motominded5275 the drive on and M1 Abram’s goes from the turbine engine to the gear box to the transmission through plan Epicyclic gearing (Planetary gears) on the drive hubs. That acts as a torque multiplier! The Honeywell AGT1500 Turbine engine has a peak output of 1500hp and 2750lb,ft of torque at 3,000 rpm! That torque is even amplified through the Epicyclic gearing! Think you need to do a little more studying before you try to convince me that the Abram’s only outputs 400ft,lb of torque.

@@P-J-W-777incorrect, you cant rely on Wiki, lol. That 3000 rpm is at output shaft of reduction gearbox, engine spins far far faster, do some actual research. Power turbine spins at 22,500 RPM prior to the 7.5:1 reduction, do the math...

@@motominded5275 well no joke ithe 3000rpm is at the gearbox. 26.9hp/t at 68 tons. I don’t use Wiki. I believe I’ll trust Lycoming on their data about their products as they are who produce the AGT1500 turbine engine and the builders of the M1 General Dynamics over someone trying to spit facts they have no real clue about.
