Ha!, thats my baja!... sold now though. controller was a futaba 4pl i think?.... hmmm can't quite remember. fun until i blew the head gasket at the end doing doughnuts. put a esp 30.5 in it and it ran great. sold it to a mate and within 5 runs he blew that head gasket too! :( bloody 2 bolt heads! ;)
How should I adjust the jets on a Walbro Carburetor (WA-167 / WT-603 / WT-668 / WT-257 / WT-813, etc)? These carburetors require regular adjustment to ensure peak performance, and also to avoid an unsafe lean condition, which can prematurely damage your engine. If you find your top-end RPM's have fallen off a bit, or if you experience lagging or surging, it is probably time to re-adjust the carb jets. To ensure max performance and engine life, follow this procedure: 1) Locate the low and high RPM jets on the side of the carb - they are usually marked with a L and a H. Turn both jets completely CLOCKWISE ( to the fully closed position). 2) Rotate the Low jet counter-clockwise to 1 and 1/4 turns open. 3) Rotate the High jet counter-clockwise to approx 1 and 3/8 turns open. 4) Now, start the engine. You may need to turn the Low jet slightly one way or the other for the engine to start. 5) Adjust the Low jet as desired until the idle is where you like it. Turning clockwise ("CLOSING" THE JET) will produce a higher idle, and counterclockwise ("OPENING" THE JET) will produce a lower idle (and eventually flood and the engine will kill, if you turn it too far). 6) Open the throttle lever to full blast. Adjust the High jet until you get maximum RPMs. Note: this will probably be REALLY LOUD. Listen for the highest-pitched whine to tell you where max RPMs are hit. AFTER YOU FIND THE MAX RPM SETTING, TURN THE HIGH JET COUNTER-CLOCKWISE ("OPEN" THE JET) APPROX 1/16TH OF A TURN TO ENSURE YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT GAS/OIL MIX TO COOL THE ENGINE PROPERLY. Note: The above are just general guidelines. You may need to adjust both the H and L screws once you begin riding, depending on engine loading, altitude, humidity, etc. The trick is to find settings that work well for you, and stick with them. Here is some helpful information regarding common carburetor tuning problems: If your engine stutters at full throttle and cannot reach full RPMs: The high jet is too far open. Close the jet by turning it clockwise slightly, and then ride-test. If no improvement, repeat until desired results are achieved. Once you have found a workable setting, open the jet approx 1/16 of a turn to ensure sufficient fuel/air mix. If your engine bogs out when transitioning from low speed: The high jet is too far closed. Open the jet by turning it counterclockwise until you are at least 1 1/2 turns open, and then gradually close the jet until performance is as desired. Poor engine compression, blocked exhausts, and very heavy engine loading can all also cause bogging. If your engine idles very fast and kills if you attempt to slow the idle: You may have an air leak in your intake. An easy way to check for leaks is to spray the intake manifold and area surrounding it with WD-40. If the idle changes after you spray the WD-40, there is an air leak. Common areas for leaks are between the manifold and the cylinder, and between the carb and the intake manifold. Inspect the manifold, carb gasket, and intake gasket for cracks or other signs of damage, and replace if necessary. If your engine idles but then slowly kills: Your low jet is too far open. Close the low jet by turning it clockwise until a stable idle is achieved. From MCD forums one of the best explanations out there.
Baja definitely needs to be a tad leaner on the top end... Listen out for the sweet spot when flat out. That jump is also nice and smooth for them to glide, just a bit of a shame it's not a touch more pronounced for a bit more hang time lol. Good video!
Blip the throttle every couple seconds to get up to speed on long runs, full throttle for more then a couple seconds will prematurely wear out your piston and ring. Full throttle for 10 meters at a time is good, constant full throttle for 100 meters not good.
My very first rc was a HPI nitro. Ordered losi 8ieght nitro buggy which isn't goin to be driving too much. Have the team basher sabertooth 8th scale truggy coming this Friday as well. I'm new to the brushless game since my days of nitro running, have to say I enjoy the bottom end torque of brushless motors but do enjoy my nitros more I think. My 2 Lipos on order are going to be late, turnigys 5000mah hard case 4s. So I got another turnigy 4s lipo coming and planned on using the one 4s lipo for the mean time till the others get here. Wondering if you had any experience with team basher sabertooth or any of their products and if I would be ok to run 1 lipo momentarily, the esc is brushless 100amp hobbywing wired for series I believe. Be nice if I can do this without cutting and soldering any wires since this is only temporarily. Again the esc is prewired for 2 Lipos stock!! Thanks guys for any help in advanced.. keep on rc'ing!!!
this mate ;) sold it on to a mate now... but yeah it was a cool baja. thinking of getting a shortie myself at some point....rcmodelz is bringing out a Rovan 'factory' baja shortie soon...
Hi mate, its gadebridge park, hemel hempstead. its a big park and this side of it is football pitches and open ground so fairly quiet. next to a main rd too so parking is ok.
RC Maxx UK thanx mate..really enjoying ur videos, im new to this 1/5th scale. I want to ask you about obr g340rc 9.4hp full mod reed case, im planning to get one to be installed on my dragon hammer but on the obr website what do i must choose on the direct bolt in? Is it kraken vekta same with dragon hammer?
Hi mate. got to say i don't know re the obri'm afraid. A great guy to get info on the dragon hammer technical is Mark from rcmodelz. You should be able to get hold of him via rcmodelz website ( as he works for them) or if you are on facebook. mark 'hoss' sanders. He was behind some development of the v1 to v2 dragon hammer and if u have 1 he's a great guy to get to know!! ;)
Does the DH have a tendency to roll? Would that be helped by getting some Pro-Line trenches that have a more rounded transition from tread surface to sidewall?
it does seem to roll a fair bit.....a change of tyres could well help. it has quite a high cog and those tyres have a very square edge that i guess has a tendency to dig in...good shout either way. cheers
Yes it does roll but might be down to bad driving.... This was the first time I really pushed the hammer. We will do another run with a pipe... I think at the moment for me at least I am still getting used to the speed...and sharp steering inputs is not helping. Will get you updated !!
There are no nearby places for me to run something that loud. My neighbors would hate me! That and no reverse keep me with electric. They look awesome!
thanks mate. we have only owned and ran these 1/5 petrol cars for a couple of months but so far had no issue finding a place to run them....they are loud though for sure!
hi mate. i can't say if the 2.0 will roll less. better.....it definitely has some tasty upgrades and differences. we are getting some v2 tyres to try on the v1 so will do a vid and show their performance soon.
hi mate, as far as i am aware its just a stock 26cc motor running a ddm copy exhaust and uber filter. i got it used though so maybe its been fettled a little. i am impressed with the way it runs tho
thanks mate. at the end of that run u see my baja cut out while I'm doing doughnuts....tried to start it yesterday but it wouldn't even splutter. noticed the head move. it was loose!...tightened it up but i think i have blown the gasket at the base of the head. lots for me to learn with these 1/5 gassers. ;)
+RC Maxx UK Still learning myself and I'm about a year into it. Started with 1/10 and 1/8 nitro when I was 18 and have been hooked ever since. My baja still runs but it needs a serious cleaning, new body, new wing, and new tires. Anything I can help you with or any tips or tricks I learn along the way, I will be more than happy to share.
i put in a caption zenoah 320 but its a g320..... ;/ also rcmodelz cables for shock limiters were an early example thats now been improved so i needed to say that they were replaced after they broke....they have been very helpful to stevo...
+RC Maxx UK ah I see. I've been tempted to give them a go after you're experiences with them but I can only see KM parts which I'm trying to avoid. I normally get all my stuff from freeprawn-racing and have quite a lot of points on there that = money.
You guys are not 1/5 scale guys. Leave the 1/5 scale testing to the Americans whom put 1/5 scale off road back on the market. Also never talk shit about the HPI Baja. The HPI Baja resurrected 1/5 from the dead.
hi mate. you are kind of right...we are relatively new to 1/5 scale. but surely owning 1/5 scales makes us 1/5 scale guys? I own 2, baja and 5ive. like them both in different ways. Us brits love our petrol rigs too and we do more than our fair share of 'testing'!! cheers ;)
its all good buddy. no offence taken at all. thanks for the com appreciate it. i'm more than happy for all to share their opinions. i like a bit of banter myself ;)
