@@mikemanzo9673 funnily enough, I was handed my brothers savage that has sat in his garage for approx 10 years. Stripped the whole thing down and rebuilt it. Took it out for the first time today for tuning. It went like stink lol.
The Paradox Yahh I’m on the brake in process now to for some reason it idles fine but as soon as I hit the throttle it shuts off , idk maybe it’s running to rich have to tune it still
I agree..,.this is a really good tuning video, Not many will show lean conditions like they did. One thing they glossed ovr was idle settings. 1. Do everything noted up to 17:25 2. What should happen is after some HS runs and letting it go to neutral, you'll hear the engine two-stage. By that do a HS run and let it go to neutral, Count how long it takes before the RPMs DROP. Typically in this state they wil drop pretty quickly. 3. Lean the LSN 1/8 and do a HS run. The time it takes for the RPMs to drop should INCREASE. 4, Repeat #2 above until the engine takes 12-15 seconds before dropping. It wil be a high idle,,.but a consistent one. 5. Once you have a consistent, high idle...simply lower the idle. Give it a try even if you are just re-tuning. I have vids of it for anyone that wants to see it.
I just unearthed one I had in the garage since 2008. It's a wreck but now I'm so excited to get in running again. I think the servo died and I just neglected it.
Dang, I wish youtube was around when I initially went into this hobby. I have since changed over to electric. Good vid! Now I want a nitro kit again, Thanks!
The biggest take away for me displayed in this video is the fact people use gloves to handle all these chemicals. I am screwed, and the air filters are super huge now. I still love the sound and smell of nitro though. So what do you all recommend? I have always ran Traxxas kits, but this thing looks pretty cool. I just got back into RC last year, a lot has changed, the tech especially. Got a MERV last year, just to scratch the itch. I dig it, however, I always want MOAR!
@@jamesandonian7829 I'd say electric is good for starters tbh cause they aren't as powerful and normally aren't as fast but if you want a challenge go for the nitro cars and tuning and maintaining them is fun but also very annoying at times
Glad I found this, I have an old Savage 21 barely used... Just got it back out gave it a good clean and hoping to get some used out of it... Haven't got the dvd with all this on anymore though
Yup. I have several HPI cars. My Mini Nitro was stored for at least 15 years and after a quick tear down and cleaning of the engine, it fired right up and runs like new. I store my cars with after run oil and I wrap in Saran wrap. Then place in a plastic sealed bin.
I keep flooding the engine on first start, not actually got my Savage XL K5.9 going yet. But this tutorial is brilliant, going to try all this again and follow it to the "T" except it is slightly different for the XL... Would be nice to see an XL version of this. Although the principles are the same, the settings are slightly different.... Thanks for this HPI. More please!
Excellent video, very nice section about setting up the carburettor, not shown in many RC videos on RU-vid . 2021 and I still the savage is probably the best 1/8th scale monster truck on the market. I have two, 1savage 25 & 1 saavage X 4.6. Just wish part here in the UK where easier to come by.
You move the high speed needle in 1/8 turns clockwise,to tune the cars top speed will increase once the top speed does not increase you will about have the hsn adjusted then after that do the low speed needle the same,if it does back the needle off
i didnot follow any of these instructions when i bought it but its as good as this one i think they did that at the store and also tuned it becuase they said one more hour
yes, i read in a mag that the company started in usa, (so the brand is USA), they have smaller outlets all over, europe, japan, china. thats what it said in a rc mag i get anyway.
Im here on 4/20 in 2024 all stoned finally put the engine back in my rig after converting it to drill start, and my drill is too weak hahaha. So close now
Nice! I'm having issues starting mine after few years right now. Can't get fuel from tank through the line with blocking the exhaust and pull start. When I drop some fuel removing the glow plug it did start for few seconds. Still no fuel running through the line. I was never an expert at this. Lol.
Try some fresh fuel tube. It could be blocked with old fuel. The same applies to the needles. Take the carb needles out and clean them with some fresh fuel. Reset to factory settings and start from there.
I need help by you doing the setting on the low or high nidle. The would use less nnitro gas or is gona make use better performance for the engine? I have a hpi rs4 n I just did the brake in but I didnt touch the nkne of the lower or high speed
Hi, I bought the Savage XL a few weeks ago. It happens, I can not lower the temperature of 138 C (280F). I have enriched the HSN but not that low temperature. I've gotten in forums and apparently is normal is 5.9 cc. You have knowledge? What temperstura works his Savage 4.6
Hello name's nitro I do a lot of tuning but it seems it gets different every time well I am on my third one now savage 25 complete ready to run but lol I Start it it starts I let it run for a little bit because I don't no the car so basically doing a te break in on the truck I take out the igniter then Rev a bit still running then it cuts off restart same thing happened have not touched the low or high speed needle yet should I ??
For the Savage 25 can we set the low speed and high speed flush with the top for default setting as shown in this video? I’ve had my Savage 25 for 10 plus years and trying to get it going again. It’s been sitting for a few years.
Im desperately truing to help my nephew set up his savage x but i cant find the battery and receiver set up video anywhere I cant set it up help please
my nitro rustler when started the wheels spin when off the ground. when i place it on the ground they stop of course. my car rolls forward when i put on breaks and i haven't even touched throttle. slightly forward not a runaway. how can i stop this?
A I have the savage x 4.6 big block truck can u tell me Were 2 find the one way bearing kit or bearings at? Thanks if u can help me or the part number it will be greatly appreciated
HRP....attention HRP..... We need nitro Savages to start coming out here in the USA Our sons are grown up and are ready to bash and run with us....but WE NEED SAVAGES! Did you hear me? Are you listening to me!?
The manual for my HPI savage XL 5.9 says to tune the HS needle until performance no longer increases AND temps don't reach above 250F. then adjust LS for better throttle response. I did that, car runs great and I have no complaints. Temps stay at a safe 235-245F. BUT I feel like it can have alot more power. No wheelies can be achieved like they showed in this video. I KNOW its a different, larger truck.. canI lean it out more safely?
+Mark Meinert yea.. idk how expensive your temp meter was... but it might be inaccurate, and showing you too high temps.. Maybe it is only running 210-220? As long as the engine NEVER stalls... Not even just once during an entire tank!! You will be fine! But as they say many times in the video, do SMALL adjustments =) good luck! btw I own a "Savage 3.5" (an old model from around 2009-2010) and just got myself an XL like you =) I can keep you updated how my break in, and tuning is going if you like? =)
+Mark Meinert And btw. this is really important The thing that makes your car able to wheelie is not high-speed needle.... It's low-speed needle adjustments =) My savage XL had VERY poor acceleration, and even quit sometimes if given full throttle from idle... Simply because it got too much fuel... That again is fixed by leaning low-speed =) Just keep tuning low-speed (little at a time) until your idle begins to raise... Then you should stop or even turn it a bit out again... Now yours might be different... But I had to screw my low-speed in about 2-3 times!! Which is ALOT.. Never seen that before.. ALSO!!! Your slipper clutch might be a tiny bit too loose to allow the car to wheelie.. But DON'T just tighten it in all the way, that will for dore fuck your gears and differentials up very quickly!! But good luck mate! =)
+FreakyFox Thank you! Since the posting of my comment I have replaced the motor since I was having basic 5.9 problems. I will hopefully having this truck running again Thursday. I got an Picco .28 and ERCM big bore end bleed pipe. And robinson racing slipper clutch spur, and clutchbell gear. When I was removing my stock clutch I noticed it was 3 full turns from full tight. I'm thinking it backed off after the 2 gal i put though the 5.9, lock tight will be my friend haha. As for tuning i know what to listen for and get a basic tune going using HS needle. I have yet to mess with low speed.
+FreakyFox Yes I would like that please do! And funny as it is I use a emissivity adjustable IR temp gun that's calibrated with a black body. (My job is actually inspection) I specialize in thermography in power plants and petrochemical haha. SO I hope its accurate!
Dont use temps to tune, Use sound and performance. Temps can be affected by anything and running the engine at 250 wil not harm it. Lack of lubcrication will hurt an engine not temps.
I just got my hands on a nice savage x 4.6 and messed with it a little and got it to fire up. But my roto start doesn't always engage the engine... Any idea what is causing that? I've not taken it apart but if I roll it back a bit it will usually catch to where the roto start will crank the engine again. I wonder if it's worn out or missing some teeth?
It sounds like it could be one of a few things: Take out and clean the One-Way bearing. This can help, but is probably only temporary. It could also be at the point that wear on the bearing rollers and shaft means it will not reliably engage anymore. Replacing both will ensure that you have good engagement.
@@OfficialHPI thanks it turned out to be caked full of greasy mud stuff. It was super caked and slick. I sprayed it out real good with some cleaner fluid and put a thin coat of grease on the shaft before reassembly and it never missed now. So much easier to start it. Got it running like a raped ape but no gear shiftage now 😒
sounds like the idle is to high. Adjust the idle speed turn the idle screw which is located on the right side of the carb and turn in counter clockwise
Your mixture is too rich, try lean out the high speed needle 1/8th of a turn until you can get it to run in a circle. But! Do not lean it out as if you were tuning it. lean it out just enough to keep the car running, even if it is rough, it is normal for the engine to run rough during the break-in period.
Hello! I have a k4.6 big block savage Im having Issues with. At idle the wheels keep spining so the clutch is engaging at idle. Does any one know how to fix this issue???
As a Savage XL user, i would say no if you are an average joe and want great performance. Brushless is the way to go for you if you don't care about the noise and feels and whatnot.
