In this moving and simple ceremony on Saturday 12th March the residential community of monks, nuns and lay practitioners of Plum Village Practice Center in southwest France gathered to invite Thay’s ashes from the altar of his “Sitting Still Hut” to the meditation hall for a final ceremony honoring 49 days since his passing. The heavens were kind and and offered the only hours of sunshine all week. After the procession and ceremony, the community then practiced walking meditation to one of Thay’s favorite spots, the Buddha Hill overlooking the medieval village of Puyguilhem. There, ten years ago, Thay placed 16 Buddhas (that he found on a teaching tour in Indonesia), to represent the 16 Exercises of Mindful Breathing and his teaching that the next Buddha will be a sangha. On days when the community gathered in Upper Hamlet to listen to him teach, Thay always liked to lead the sangha out in walking meditation to sit silently on this spot and enjoy the peace and beauty of the landscape and forests. It is here that we see in this poignant video Thay’s ashes being returned to the Earth.
The video is accompanied by an instrumental arrangement of the song "Unborn and Indestructible." Music composed by Brother Phap Linh and performed by Sister Trai Nghiem and Brother Phap Linh. In this version the background bell sound is heard clearly.
