I have made over 36 t-shirt quilts and have never stabilized any of them. No problems, and they are so much softer and not heavy, stabilizer just adds weight. I put a 2" border on them and they quilt up nicely.

I made my first t-shirt quilts with sashings for my grandsons college graduations this year and ShapeFlex is the best for me because it’s woven stabilizer. It’s great for the t-shirts, silkie jerseys and football jerseys with the holes. You don’t have to add any extra fabrics for backings. ❤️

Snip the post off and super glue the pin back in place before stitching in place

I’d probably glue the backs on the pens and rock on!

Hi from Sydney Australia. Thank you again for a very informative video. I used the Chinese Crescent as my very first pantograph from the front of my Simply Sixteen. It was on a quilt made from my sons first business shirts in a disappearing 9 patch .

Your video came at the perfect time! At a recent Quilt Guild meeting, I had an informative conversation with a few ladies on how to stabilize the t-shirt material using stabilizers. This is PERFECT! Thank you all so very much!

I have three memory quilts to make so this is awesome and perfectly timed. Thanks so much!

Sew a tab that the pins are in and the tabs are attached to the quilt at two ends so you can unpin to wash.

this is perfect timing, I have my two grandsons baby/toddler clothing cut and ready to stabilize for a memory quilt for mommy

This week, I am finishing a daughter's memory quilt with her Dad's racing & work place t-shirts. I included a photo transfer block of herself with her Dad at her high school graduation. After placing the front & back on the double wide design wall... I decided to add a binding strip between the front & back...as a book binding... so she can fold it on the binding area down the middle. Since she told me she's going to cuddle with it, it really was too small if completed with the front & back as a traditional quilt. So, I made both sides as a wide front, and used a blanket that her Grandfather used whole on rehab, then while on Hospice. So, I serged the blanket all around leaving 12 inches to turn it inside out, and will sew the edges down at 1/2" from the edge, do the edges don't roll. Then, decide if an all over design or stitch around the t-shirt designs; avoiding the photo transfer block. I had designed & did a photo transfer for the quilt label & used it as a block, too. No need for any binding. Cuddly blanket backing, no batting, will make this memory quilt very inviting to be used! Other t-shirt quilts I have made were sewn with cotton backing, but no batting, either, to save on the heaviness of the quilts.

For the Lettermens pins,if I was wanting to have them on the quilt- I would applique the letters on without them first,then push the pin through the letters and the quilt to attach the back. Love this informational video. I got alot of great tips. Thanks
@delinaquilter1418
@delinaquilter1418 4 года назад
Definitely take the pins off. Usually they are white metal or such and will deteriorate when the quilt is washed.

I forgot this isn’t live now. It’s 8:30 pm. I’m talking about the quilt with the thick athletic letters and the pins.

While watching the video I noticed a quilt with a purple T-shirt that says “Monmouth College, 1997.” This is a true coincidence, my granddaughter graduated from Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL last May. She enjoyed her 4 years at that college, was a member of a sorority in their Greek world, and was the Homecoming Queen. The even stranger coincidence is that she was born in 1997!!! We would love to communicate with the quilt’s owner. Perhaps they are also an alumni.

When my kids had letter jackets with these types of letters we always dry cleaned the jackets. I would try washing the quilt but not machine dry it.

In instances using Minky backing on a t-shirt quilt, how many spi do you recommend? And would you slow the speed down or does it not matter? Great video BTW, I love how Vicky is always answering newbie questions we wouldn't now to ask.
@kristinawhitneyhqstudioedu7013
@kristinawhitneyhqstudioedu7013 4 года назад
You don't need to change your SPI for minky backing. I usually use between 10 and 12 spi.

Hot glue the pins to the top, double sticky tape the faster not the back

Hi. What about needle size? Should you use a 16 or 18 and should you use a ball point needle? Thanks for a great video!!
@HandiQuilter

We recommend using the best needle for the thread you're using.

I've had some things on t shirts stick to the pressor foot. A piece of paper over the design solved my problem. Are there other options?
@kristinawhitneyhqstudioedu7013
@kristinawhitneyhqstudioedu7013 4 года назад
I have heard people suggest using tissue paper over the design. I really like using the Glide foot. I haven't had any issues with it sticking.

Johnny's quilt is amazing. I don't recall the mention of machine needles. I am ready to start quilting my grandson's tee shirt quilt and I am unsure which needles to use. Are the jersey ball points the most suitable?
@HandiQuilter
@HandiQuilter 4 года назад
We recommend following the recommendations for what needle according to what thread you're using. We used sharp needles as opposed to ball-point.
