Demo: Tron: Legacy (Caster scene)

One of my favorite demo videos. Get you some!
Type - Sealed
Woofer - 15"
Power - 600 Watts RMS 2,000 Watts Peak
Frequency response 20 - 200 Hz, +/ 1 dB
Cabinet - Black
Dimensions (H x W x D) - 19” x 18” x 19.5
Weight (pounds): 65 lbs.
Regular Price - $779 ( MSRP $1,099)
Where I Purchased - Downtown Seattle, at one of the high-rises. From a very nice guy.
Price Paid - $440
Condition - 85% (not included in the Average Guy Hi-Fi score)
This subwoofer is in good shape but there are some small marks and swirls on the cabinet.
Quality - 8.5
This a large,compact and well made 15”subwoofer. The finish looks and feels high quality.
My only minor complaint would be the feel/materials of the 12” woofer. I have owned subwoofers from direct competitors like SVS, HSU, Velodyne etc and those companies seem to have heavier duty woofers with rubber surrounds.
With that said, in this price point, HSU truly manufactured one remarkable subwoofer.
I like it so much that I might be ordering dual ULS-15’s for my personal use.
Bass - 9.0
This sub puts out killer deep bass with authority. I’ve always gravitated towards sealed subs, always have. Part of that reason is the compact size but the mane reason I like sealed subs is that the bass just flat out suites my ears.
Killer deep bass and plenty of it all in a fairly compact cabinet.
MSRP Rating - 9.5
Can’t believe the regular price is only $779! Again, like the HSU VTF2 MK 4, performed a near miracle when it comes to what they were able to accomplish, within this price point.
To all the HSU forum fanboys, I’m now drinking the HSU Kool-Aid.
In fact, I might just order dual ULS-15 MK2 for my own personal use, like i mentioned above.
Aesthetics - 8.5
I definitely love the looks of this sub in my room, over the VTF I reviewed.
The ULS-has a nicer finish and I definitely prefer the size, over the VTF-2 MK4
Simple and compact 15” subwoofer.
Price Paid Value - 8.5
A killer deal, no doubt about that but it is such a good deal new, at $779, that that makes it not my best deals at $400.
This is a total generalization but I usually like to pay $50% off MSRP on the used markets but sometimes I’ll stretch that rule, for the right subwoofer. This was clearly the right move:)
Final thoughts -
HSU had undoubtedly earned my respect. I’m fact, dual ULS 15’s might be on the horizon, especially since I think a refresh is likely around the corner.
Dr. HSU, feel free to send me subs to review:) Well done!
^^ Kept the same comments that I wrote for the VTF-2 MK4 that I reviewed. It sums up exactly how I feel about HSU.

Awesome and informative review Dustin. I agree most people recommend the usual sub brands or some other brand which are getting bigger and pricier as I type. The HSU seems to hit a good balance in sound, size vs cost. I’m a diy guy myself. Keep the reviews coming. And.. Thank you.

Thanks for the compliment! You DIY guys have it made in the shade. No company can touch the $/performance of DIY, not even close. If I had a garage and more woodworking skills, I’d be all over building a pair of 15” sealed subs. HSU might just be the next best option. Just floored by their prices and performance. I’d love to see what HSU could do with a $1,500 - $2,000 sub. Thanks for stopping by and Happy Thanksgiving!

I own the HSU ULS-15 MK2 sub and am very happy with it. It's a really great value. I bought this sealed sub for two channel and multi-channel audio. The ported versions that HSU carries may be better for the very lowest of lows while playing movies though.

You have excellent taste in subs and are good with money. The VTF-15 MK2 might just be the best performing subs for the money, if you aren’t into or willing to go DIY. HSU should be sending me some subs to test, with all the praise I’ve been pouring in them. I just love their place in the market!

I've had one of these for about a year now, easily one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's rare to have something that feels and sounds like it's worth every dollar you spent on it. In a small to mid size living room it's as if it has absolute power. My windows rattle, I can't close cabinet doors in the kitchen all the way, I can't close interior doors, so on and so forth. I use it for music 99% of the time, so much power. It can be loud and obnoxious, and so subtle as the couch beneath you tries to scurry away with you on it in near otherwise silence.
@blazermdx

Minus DIY or vented subs, I believe this is the pound for pound the best sub on the market, for the money. I’ve been trying to talk myself into the sealed Rythmik subs but the price difference is insane. Rythmik makes killer subs but it’s about $2,500 vs. $1,700 when comparing duals. I’m 90% sure I’m going with dual HSU subs. Just too good for the money:)

I would love to have duals. Do I need it? Not really. Would I like to? Sure. lol I'd love to get the CCB-8's to compliment the ULS-15 Mk2. I can definitely say the sub is a reliable workhorse. But the Rythmik I can only presume would be, too. For about a year whenever I'm home I have music playing because music is life to me -- kids grown and gone, I've regressed to a teenager.

Modern foam surrounds will last a very long time. Much better than the ones from 20 years ago that would fall apart. There's some technical advantages with the foam surrounds, lighter weight being one of them. Funk audio also uses foam surrounds on pretty much all of their subs.
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 3 года назад
I thought I had read something like that a few times. I remember reading that this new style foam should last about as long as rubber. I tried not to be too negative on this point, since Dr. HSU knows what he’s doing and is 100x more knowledgeable on this type of woofer subject. I’d still prefer a rubber surround but that’s more for the looks than anything:)
@jC-kc4si
@jC-kc4si 3 года назад
The HSU CCB-8 uses a cloth surround. The 'foam' surround on the ULS 15 doesn't look or feel like the foam you typically see on speakers. It appears to be much more substantial than the speaker foams I have seen that have rotted away. The ULS foam may be closer to Neoprene.

Imho, HSU under 1k PSA and Rythmik above 1k. Funk audio if you have money to burn. While SVS would impress most casual listeners walking in the room, it simply doesn't compete with these guys bang for buck. Aesthetics would be a reason to go SVS but anyone buying a PSA sub is more about feeling the sub hit them in the chest than how pretty they are. Great vids man, I am eating them up.

It will all really depend on your room size and what you are using the system for. The general rule is to go with the ported version if you have a larger room and you are mainly using it for movies and video games. I had one of these ULS 15 MK2s initially in 500 square foot basement theater room it filled and pressurized really well I was blown away I only had the volume at the 11 o’clock position on the plate amp and the channel level for the LFE -7 . It literally shook my whole house, I’m willing too bet this sub will be enough for most people in medium to fairly large rooms. I own 2 now not because I needed it but because I thought it would look and sound awesome running a pair of them and it does 😂. @@blazermdx thanks for doing a review of it, when I bought mine I was kind of going in blind. This review you did will help guide a lot of people. That being said, I wish HSU would step up their social media game, I feel like I’m in secret subwoofer society 😂 cause it’s only a popular name in forums word of mouth etc. A lot of RU-vidr reviews complain that they reach out to HSU through email and they don’t respond usually. Their Facebook page hasn’t been updated in years. Im not saying they have to get a crazy marketing team, but they can hire one guy to manage that stuff. They can get demo subs out channels like yours and others. If they started doing this I think their brand might end up exceeding SVS in popularity because of the value. Maybe for deep bass you would go with the HSU but for decent bass that digs deep enough, the SB-2000 Pro with DSP and 5 year warranty on the sub and the amp. Plus the ability to trade up. Im not sure why you think the SB-2000 is more articulate, this ULS-15 MK2 is considered one of the most articulate subs on the market especially at this price point, not saying SB 2000 pro isnt, but assuming its more articulate cause its smaller would be wrong. Driver design and amps are big factors its not apples to apples comparison this also has a amp capable of a 2000 watt peak. Things like the kick of the bass drum are extremely tight and sounds like the drum set is in the room literally. DSP control built into subs is cool, but honestly if you buy a mini DSP HD its far better for DSP control than anything built into sub. So I actually prefer subs that dont have overly sophisticated DSP because it adds unneeded delay in the chain that usually cant be bypassed when using a mini DSP HD. That being said the SB-2000 pro is a fantastic sub, but it won't quite bring the house down like a ULS-15 MK2 does, even the SB-3000 would fall short... you would need to go up to the sb-4000 model or higher to match the performance of the ULS.

@@Paranimal86 I think the SB-2000 Pro is articulate because I own one and it is superb with music and performs as perfect as I would expect. Do you have the ULS-15 MK2? If yes, have you compared it side by side with the SB-2000 Pro? I haven't and when I spoke earlier I based it upon my assumption as a SB-2000 Pro owner and assumed that a 15 subwoofer would not be as fast or musical. Anyway, I purchased dual Hsu ULS-15 MK2s today and whenever they arrive, I will know hands-own and hands-down!

That’s the best way to do it! Please come back and share your impressions of the ULS-15 MK2’s, I would love to hear your hands-on impressions. Congrats on the incoming subs, my friend!

I might be biased but I think HSU subs are pretty good deal 😁. They're doing smart stuff when it comes to economies of scale since that sub along with the two top ported subs all use the same driver and amps for the most part minus dsp work they need. The extra money you save could be used to get a miniDSP too which almost defeats the savings but at the same time you're getting much better control over them more so than you would get with the SVS app. My only complaint with them is the lack of variable phase and was the main reason I needed a miniDSP HD.

@@blazermdx hmm it seems they're the mk1 version, still probably very worth it but im not sure if they would resell easily? Theres 2 available

@blazermdx 3 года назад
Well, you’d definitely be able to get your money back out of them and probably then some, but at that price, you should keep them. Having that kind of performance, with only $400 invested is awesome! The MK2 is definitely a step up but from what I’ve read, the MK1 is no slouch.

I would love to get into a couple sub builds and one day I hope to. Unfortunately, I don’t have any woodworking skills and I don’t even have a garage so those videos will have to wait.. I would love to order some GSG or Parts Express flat packs and build my own subs. That’s definitely the best way to stretch your budget and get maximum performance. Great feedback and thank you for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it!

Can I get this sub in the UK?
@blazermdx
@blazermdx 3 года назад
Unfortunately, I don’t believe HSU offers international shipping. I’m not positive about this, only going off what I’ve read online. It would be worth an email to HSU though. Just Google HSU Subwoofers and click on the “contact us” link and ask. They are pretty quick to reply. I believe you have access to SVS in the UK, right?

HSU makes really good value products. SVS probably beats them a bit but quite a bit more expensive so SVS a bit better (performance), HSU better economic value. I guess RELs are awesome for music but so overpriced for what you get.

Definitely worth the price of admission, and then some:) I’m still leaning towards a pair of these for my personal use. If I can ever afford to buy a house big enough for a dedicated theater. Thanks again, my friend!

I have a very small room, unfortunately. Any decent sub like this just overpowers my microphone. Would you prefer that I play them at louder volumes, with no sound? I want this to be a channel that people enjoy so I’m open to any feedback you can offer. Thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to comment!
