Hu Shih | Philosopher vs Communist China

China underwent massive change during the 20th century. It was a period of doing away with the old and bringing rise to the new. These changes were political, cultural, linguistic, and societal. The pragmatist philosopher Hu Shih was at the center of many of these debates and changes. Being a student of John Dewey, Hu applied pragmatist thinking to traditional ideas in chinese culture and critiqued them in favor of more modern and efficient ideas. Most famously, he critiqued classical Chinese language in exchange for a more modern vernacular language.
Despite pushing for progress and change, Hu Shih was very skeptical about marxism and it's rise in China. He saw too many similarities between people dogmatically following confucianism and people dogmatically following marxism. Ideologies, to Hu, are theories to be tested, not absolute truths. This led to much of his work being destroyed by the Chinese Communist party and unfortunately he has faded somewhat into obscurity.

I'm not sure whether he's a forgotten philosopher or not, but I don't hear about him that often: Vilem Flusser, a Czech-Brazilian philosopher of media and information.

BTW, what about a video on {Julien Offray de La Mettrie} L’Homme-machine. Probably most of the people don't know him!!! The title of philosopher and the reputation of being unfortunate were enough to procure for La Mettrie a refuge in Prussia with a pension from the king. Where he came under the protection of Frederick the Great who provided him with sanctuary and made him the official court physician.

Very cool! Now I'm thinking what other philosophers are forgotten... maybe Cioran, Hui Shi, Cimmrman ... ? Maybe whatever Arabic philosopher came up with the "God can't make a stone he can't lift" paradox.

I'd be interested in Cioran but I think he's too well known to be considered a forgotten philosopher so maybe just a normal video on him

@@PhilosophyToons I think he's underrated at least, because Nietzsche casts such a large shadow.

Cool about the immortality stuff. It's ironic that his works were destroyed in that sense but you are helping him be remembered as an individual and all life is influential after death as a collective. For example, algae made oxygen way back in the day for us to breath. Plant material left us with fossil fuels. And what will our generation leave?

maybe this dude's position is a call to inaction, but that still wouldn't mean i'm wrong for noticing step 2 is the same as the underpants gnomes. if a coyote just gotta shop acme, btw, why never fine tune what went wrong before, always on to the next product?
