Hey Chaps - how important is the Zoom lens for you? (And would you get much use out of the 10x optical)? 🤔

The absence of GMS is actually a plus for me. I'm currently using the P40 and the P40 Lite. No problems whatsoever. Haven't sideloaded Google coz I don't need it. Most apps that I use are either available or have substitutes.

From a photographers point of view, Leica makes some of the best lenses this world has ever seen.

The cut out isn't getting in the way though. I'd rather have the 3d more secure face unlock. Also, the speaker is actually quite good. I have the P40 Pro now and had a Mate 20 Pro before it. The Mate had stereo speakers but the P40 Pro's actually sound better since it is clearer and has more bass. Also remember, at 120hz with the Samsung, your have to use FHD. At QHD you must use 60hz. So Huawei has the best balance with a high refresh rate and high pixel density.

Getting a third ecosystem and seeing it’s development and improvements is definitely a plus for me! Monopolies are really bad...

I would say for the RU-vid app on any Android phone (Not just Huawei) ... Get RU-vid Vanced. It's perfect.

When the selling point of a 1.4k Euro flagship phone becomes its camera....the whole point about these 'flagship' phones is just bragging...no real use argument. There is so much more one can do with that much money. I mean the hand shaking at 100x zoom on any camera without a stand just makes the whole point useless...and carrying a stand defeats the 'portability' argument of a 'good' camera on a phone. And this applies to pretty much all expensive 'flagship' phones.

Although i don't like the brand, but i got to admit huawei is the master of smartphone color.

I own the P40 Pro, I am quite happy even without the Google Services, but paying an extra 400 pounds or equivalent for the zoom? NAH.......

I know the software not yet finalized but the S20 Ultra zoomed image surprisingly looks slightly better than P40 Pro+ considering it has full optical 10x zoom system. Probably the high res sensor on Ultra periscope helps.

My white pro plus has a beautiful ceramic body making it feel premium. Costing 512 of memory makes it worth every penny. The camera quality is awesome.

I mean I’d be really hard pressed to buy this over an iPhone 11 Pro/pixel/S20 with a full array Moment Lenses. They individually offer a greater overall experience regardless of which camp you fall in.

RU-vid reviewers are looking clueless these days. I have GMS yet I always use Vanced RU-vid. Apkpure, Amazon Appstore, Aptoide App store have all these apps. Dont have access to gmaps? Use here we go. Or download the apps from the official app website.

Also, the Google play store hasn't been an issue. I have Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, Snapchat and twitter. I use RU-vid vanced which is wonderful actually and you're able to log in to your account. It works better than the normal RU-vid app. Even Google maps and Waze transferred. I replaced Google play music with Tidal and cancelled my play music subscription. HereWeGo maps, which is available on the Huawei App Gallery, is actually great and it's what the car manufacturers use for their inbuilt systems. I think it is Google that loses here. There's plenty of great alternative apps to Google. Now it may require log in on different apps yes but I'll take that. Huawei phones are too good to just give up especially when there's a multitude of alternative apps that's actually better than many Google apps. Without Google I've realised that there's actually life outside Google and apps that are better. There's also Findorra which is an alternative app store Huawei is promoting in my country. And it really isn't an issue. I was skeptical but decided to try Huawei without gms and I couldn't be happier with it.

The top 2 apk stores mentioned by Huawei in one of their support tips are APKPure and Aurora store. I have no idea why nobody on RU-vid ever mentions Aurora store, but it's the very best thing apart from google's play store. It actually uses Google Play's API to give you all the apps that are on Google Play, and it has LOCATION SPOOFING.. Neither APKPure nor any other store comes close to how good Aurora store is. If you're not finding you're banking apps, Aurora store will get them for you (I know from experience you can't side-load banking apps)

Honestly looking at the s20U and P40PP comparison pictures side by side, I think the ultra looks better. Am I wrong?

I have a OnePlus 8 Pro and it is great. I don't think the huge price difference and the lack of Google Services justifies the price in the UK.

its the lack of google services, huge punch hole, and no 120 hz at qhd thats bugs me for that price tag. samsung may have oversold their space zoom into oblivion( pun intended) but they got the rest right and honestly the difference is so minimal il take samsung over this. not the ultra though, il wait for the note. awesome stuff tom per usual mate

At 10x zoom I actually prefer the S20 Ultra photo, brightness is what’s makes it stand out despite it being a hybrid zoom.

The price doesn't justify the need for those additional specs

If you're afraid of security for the apps just buy a cheap galaxy s3, download all the apps you need. do backup and use those apks downloaded from the playstore..

I prefer S20 Ultra in most of those shots... strangely. Expected though. The telephoto sensor of the S20 Ultra is 48 MP and that’s higher than P40 Pro+, along with a larger sensor. That’s why it compares well with the P40 Pro+ in daylight. I think if I really want a phone between P40 Pro and P40 Pro+, P40 Pro is a much better deal, especially with how big the price difference really is. The added features couldn’t justify the much higher price for me. Not to mention that P40 Pro subjectively looks much more beautiful in those colours. But if I’m getting one between P40 Pro+ and S20 Ultra. The choice is obvious and that’s the Ultra. Although if I’m considering between the ultra and p40 pro, I’ll have to think about that. Shame about the lack of Google play store. Still i hope more 3rd party stores will flourish and break the grip Google have on Android to give both developers and customers more choice.

My biggest issue (Just purchased the Matepad Pro (Really good though)) with not having GMS by default is all of the purchases I have made in the Play Store are no longer available, both subscriptions and pro apps I have bought. So while I can still get the apps I had before, any purchases are back to basics. So ended going down the route of installing GMS

I like your review but, and I am not knocking it, I would like to see how the camera software works. I saw the Sony Xperia 1 mk2 and the interface is really good. You can see the camera controls on one side of the screen and the view on the other - so, apparantly, no delving into menus when you want to control exposure settings etc. I would be interested to see how the 'pro camera' software works on the Huawei.

This is a beauty of a phone. I love the aesthetic part of it from that ceramic white look to the camera layout. The specs are really cool too. However, the lack of the play store is the biggest caveat for me. I'm the 'phone guy' for some of my friends and this has been the biggest argument point for me to convince them not to get Huawei phones until the whole US trade drama is resolved or when Huawei decides to completely move away from Android to Harmony OS. The zoom feature is nice but I really wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there because frankly there isn't a lot of use for it right now. I love your review btw.

I love the looks of the matt glas back in the P40 Pro look better than the glossy white on the plus

I'm going for the p 40 pro. It's a us great phone. for just 42 pound per month. I don't mind fiddling about to get my apps and being GM's free is great for the battery. However I can't justify another 400 quid for the + version. The 40 pro already has class leading optics and a generous amount of extendable storage. Thanks for the info. I do love ceramic s mind

This is a reminiscent of the Nokia Lumia 1020 - great hardware, bad software The app gapp, so to speak, is a major deal breaker. It's just Google apps but any other apps that rely on Google services such as Waze and Uber for example I know I can install GMS assuming that the unofficial method still works but that's me. How about the average joe who doesn't even know what an apk is? Huawei should lower their pride and decrease their pricing in order to compete

I didn't regret I bought Huawei p40 pro plus the camera is awesome for me. I love photography this is important for me and the battery is good... All apps from my p40 pro I clone it Everything is work perfectly... Happy and content that's important for me keep safe big hugs from Belgium

I'm using Huawei Mate 20x and hoping if ever in the future Huawei has Google play store again .. Finger cross with Huawei Mate 50X 😅

Does anyone know why we're so worried about Huawei but not about companies like OnePlus? I'm guessing it's just because of the telecoms products which mean anyone in security wouldn't be worried about Huawei mobile phones? Not that I'm thinking of getting one just curious.

I expect qhd and stereo speakers and every other new tech when paying 1000 for a phone. So mate 20 pro is the latest from Huawei to have all that.

I'm deciding on a new laptop atm and I think I've narrowed it down to my favourites being Asus Zenbook duo, dell XPS 13 or surface laptop 3. When your so early you dont know what to comment

I'm looking at the 30x and 10x zoom shot. The Ultra looks better. The colors are more accurate while there is a brownish overlay on the Huawei. The trees show far more detail in the 30x zoom shot on the Ultra. Does anyone see different? That means the biggest advantage the p40 has is a 100x zoom that is slightly sharper. They need to dominate where it counts. So you can call em the King amongst Kings. They are not a King among peasants.

Wait a second. It's not "full hd plus", it's a about 23% higher res and a great compromise between sharpness and performance/battery life. Also, GSMArena measured much higher peak brightness on the Pro Plus than one the regular Pro model. While the camera system is the best and most flexible we've seen yet, I'm still disappointed. I'm not a fan of their 8MP sensors and this one doesn't have RYYB on either of the zoom cameras like the much improved sensor on the P40 Pro. The "10X" optical lens is an improvement but it's unfortunately not twice as good as the 5X cameras we've seen. I'm very happy with my P30 Pro though, this year's phones haven't improved much.

For me, the best Aurora stor, you can log on to your Google account, and if you have purchased apps, you can take them as a paid version 👍🙂🤗🤗🤗

Good hardware, software is a deal breaker. Until the App Gallery has the same amount of apps as the Play Store or App Store, I don't see how anyone can recommend this phone to the western market. if you're not a phone enthusiast, you will not be spending your time downloading APKs or using inferior desktop versions of apps just for a Huawei phone.

But 10x optical still soft same as hybrid zoom on s20 Ultra

Actually the P40 Pro can be bought for a price of aroun 700€ and 600€ b-ware. Thats a pretty good price for one of the best cams on the market

So on my 3rd Huawei phonenow (gr5, p20 pro and p30 pro) and will be soon looking for my next upgrade.Sadly i am embedded in the google ecosystem so this is out of the picture at the moment. Not a fan of Samsung. I can't seem to get on with them. So do i go for the Sony 1 mark2 , oppo find x2 pro or the one plus 8 pro? Camera wise which would be the best choice?

I can’t be the only one who, after seeing all of these comparisons between the P40 Pro+ and the S20 Ultra, the Ultra clearly gets the better camera results.

It's really not worth having an Android phone without the ecosystem.

Seems MrMobile also had a similar outcome of this phone in the states. Great camera and phone but can’t recommend due to the lack of Google support. Seems to have too many trade offs for a £1300 phone

i went for the p40 pro, i really dont need 10x optical + the 10x optical has a worst aperture than the 5x so worst pics at night. Also it takes 15 min to install google services, dont get it why so many are making a big deal out of it + youtube vanced is way better than normal youtube, also, best decision ever after being with samsung for 10 years

I wish Huawei would just price this under a 1000 bucks andmd p40 pro under 700 just to convince loads of people to get onboard. Otherwise, only reason I think they're even thinking of pricing it in the same ballpark as Samsung or Apple without Google services is hoping Tump isn't re elected.
