I remember when the movie came out and every critic in the world decided it was, like, the worst movie ever -- except one who wrote for the McClatchy News Service who said he couldn't understand what the fuss was about, because he spent the whole movie laughing his patootie off. And he wound up sort of apologizing in his review for liking it so darn much. Well, I'm with that guy. The movie was quirky and hip in a way that was entirely uncool at the time of its release but definitely was cool about 10 years later. I'm not going to claim Bruce Willis is much of a singer -- I think I sound about as good as he does when I am in the shower. But this is the socko arrangement I hear when I have the water running and I'm singing "Swingin' on a Star.'
There was a guy who wrote for one of the papers I read. He gave it a good review at the time, and said for years after that he'd have to live down giving it a positive one.I actually like it.
I used to review bad movies online and watched this one, having been told it was a stinker. By the end of the movie I was like "oh. Well that actually wasn't bad." I was vaguely disappointed, lol.
This movie was a bit before my time, but it's one of my favorite Bruce Willis movies I find it hilarious and I have no idea what the critics back then were watching but I know that I watched a damn good and funny movie.
I saw the movie on Netflix and I had to see it. Was a child when I saw ot the first time and I loved it. Great classic music and Bruce did amazing. God bless
For me, I just saw it this afternoon before I decided to eat dinner. I never saw this film back then because I was too young but seeing it for the first time without any nostalgic attachment or bias towards it, I was surprisingly not disappointed. I love the way Willis and Aiello sing together in a duet with this song and Side by Side. Also, because it is an Action Comedy film, I totally laughed my butt off especially when it came to the dog and even the exchange of dialogue between Willis and Aiello’s characters. I really enjoyed every minute of it. This movie stole my heart! I will treasure it forever, no matter what.
lol I remember thinking the same thing way back in the 1980's when my mom had a Bruce Willis album called "the Return of Bruno" - she'd listen to "Under the Boardwalk" a million times while singing along lool.
When the time for Bruce has come to leave this world, the world will be poorer by another legendary actor. Why can't such legends be immortal, except inside their films
I have no idea why critics claim this is one of the worst movies made. I beg the differ, this movie had me laughing hard. Absolutely LOVE Bruce Willis.♥️
Agreed--one of my all-time favorite movies! Incredible ensemble cast delivering over-the-top performances, great story that kept the pace moving swiftly, very quirky, awesome cinematography / locations...this movie has everything. The critics at the time unfortunately pigeon-holed Willis as John McClain.
i think it's dam good fun,Bruce Willis,Danny Aiello look like there having fun to.i seen this film 4 times now,as 4 "CRITIC'S WTF DO THEY KNOW" SH*T ;-)
Hello there is only ONE VERSION....Bing Crosby and the kids singing it in the film where Bing won an Oscar for his acting. Swinging on a star CREATED and sung in the film Going My way"
It's whoever *writes* a certain song that can even get *nominated* for an Oscar, let alone *win* one. Bing never wrote it. It was Jimmy Van Heusen for the music and Johnny Burke for the words. Whoever sings a certain song can only even get nominated for, let alone win, an Oscar, if he or she was involved in writing it, such as Phil Collins for "You'll Be in My Heart" (he won not for performing, but for writing).
As far as I'm concerned, the movie was then and still is, entertaining. Critics can pan all they want. The movie isn't designed to change the world, it's simply a movie to watch, shake your head at silly/funny/stupid moments, and go about your day.
Who tf doesn't like this? I sang this to my 1st generation grandmother who's parents were from rome and Sicily. I sang this to her before she passed away from stage 4 liver cancer. I think I played both versions.. She raised me and I'm a tough broad like her but she was tougher. Here's to Mary Rose Gasbara.
I'll have to find that movie and catch up with the rest of you. I just listened to versions of the song by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, and even though Bruce's vocal skills are no match for either of those two icons, I still prefer Bruce's version because there's so much more energy in the arrangement which makes it more fun, especially the bring-down-the-house ending. Anybody know who the arranger was?
SuperGaleford ~ Because Willis was such great success in Die Hard critics couldn't deal with the transition from the intense John McClain character to the more playful, comedic Hudson Hawke one. At least, that's the general consensus. However, other opinions are welcome.
Johnny boy..I don;t live under a rock. I have taste. Sinatra ONLY sang this song, because he adored Bing Crosby's version that was in the film where Bing Crosby not only INTRODUCED the song by singing it in the film Going MY WAY, but also won a best actor oscar...So please stop showing your ignorance The SONGWRITER Jim Van Heusen came up with the idea for the song, at THE BING CROSBY HOUSE with Bing, they took it to the lyric writer's house Johnny Burke, THAT is how DEFINATIVE version of ther son
The evidence suggests otherwise. CraigNdayday27 can give you credit for an opinion but I won't. It is OBVIOUS there is more than one version as is suggested by the FACT that this is a version and not Bing's. Sinatra also performed it. You must live under a rock.
I never read anything witten by critics. I never agree with. They hate this great movie and think that Avatar was the best movie ever. Pocahontas had the same storie plot and was better.
