Wow! The 1980's show "Out of This World" used this as their theme song but changed the lyrics. The show's lyrics go like this: Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? And be better off than you are? Or would you rather go to earth? An earthling's a creature as plain as can be he's not as unique as you and me. He comes in different sizes and different shapes they say his relatives are chimps and apes. But if you take my advice for what it's worth you could be happy there on earth. Or would you rather swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? And be better off than you are? You could be swinging on a star. Whoa oh oh! You could be swinging on a star!
I probably saw this show when it first aired, circa 1957-58...I was in love with Janet, who by shear coincidence was born the exact same day as I was: June 15, 1946. Alas, I have never known how to contact her to tell her.
This is 60s wholesome, and sadly today, kids this age are learning songs about sex and drugs and things that innocent ten year olds hould not have to worry about ! Also learned this song when I was ten, in music class.
Oh, the stories about Lawrence Welk. Julius LaRosa got canned for doing the unthinkable: he got an agent. The Lennon Sisters were fired, axed by one of Welk's proxies, not Welk himself, it's over, don't come back. Because the sisters, much older, dressed too sexy in their Vegas Act. The best story is from Andy Williams, but it's too naughty for me to post.
Would you like to swing on a star Carry moonbeams home in a jar And be better off than you are (Ooo) Or would you rather be a mule? A mule is an animal with long funny ears He kicks up at anything he hears His back is brawny but his brain is weak He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak And by the way, if you hate to go to school You may grow up to be a mule Or would you like to swing on a star Carry moonbeams home in a jar And be better off than you are, doo doo Or would you rather be a pig? A pig is an animal with dirt on his face His shoes are a terrible disgrace He has no manners when he eats his food He's fat and lazy and extremely rude But if you don't care a feather or a fig You may grow up to be a pig Or would you like to swing on a star Carry moonbeams home in a jar And be better off than you are Or would you rather be a fish? A fish won't do anything, but swim in a brook He can't write his name or read a book To fool the people is his only thought And though he's slippery, he still gets caught But then if that sort of life is what you wish You may grow up to be a fish A new kind of jumped up slippery fish And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo Everyday you'll meet quite a few So you see it's all up to you (Ooo) You can be better than you are (Ooo) You could be swingin' on a star Doo doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo
From other Lennon Sisters videos I've seen where the youngest sister still looks the same and the others also have the same exact hair, those other videos are from 1956, so figure this is from 1956 (maybe 1955 or 1957, but from what I'm seeing from the other videos and matching them up to this one, I'm betting it's from 1956). It's definitely NOT from 1960 because by then the smallest one is almost as tall as the others and in later years she's the same size or slightly taller than some of the others. So I'm going with 1956 being the year this video is originally from.
Ich mag das Lied eigentlich gerne, aber wenn ich sehe, wie affektiert das hier präsentiert wird, besonders die Kleine mit ihrem aufgesetzten Dauergrinsen, muss ich wegdrücken.
